Abstract

Maternal anemia remains a major public health problem, particularly in developing countries, including Indonesia. Conventional iron supplementation often faces adherence issues due to side effects, thus highlighting the need for alternative, food-based interventions utilizing locally available resources. Snakehead fish (Channa striata) is rich in high-quality protein, albumin, and bioavailable iron, while moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera) contain plant-based iron, vitamin C, and antioxidants that enhance iron absorption. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of floss products based on snakehead fish and moringa leaves to increase hemoglobin levels in pregnant women with anemia. A quasi-experimental study was conducted on 40 pregnant women with anemia, divided into one control group (floss products without moringa) and one intervention groups with different moringa additions every week (15 g, 20 g, and 25 g). Each participant consumed 150 g of floss products daily for 3 weeks. Hemoglobin levels were measured before and after intervention using standard procedures. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Mann-Whitney U Test with a 95% confidence level. The mean hemoglobin level increased from 9.7 g/dL (SD = 0.3) to 10.6 g/dL (SD = 0.5) after the intervention (p < 0.001). The intervention groups achieved significantly higher hemoglobin levels (mean = 12.5 g/dL, SD = 0.9) compared to the control group (mean = 11.2 g/dL, SD = 0.7), with p = 0.002. The combination of snakehead fish and moringa leaves was effective in improving hemoglobin levels among pregnant women with anemia.

Abstract

Menstrual problems affect as high as 90% of adolescent females and are the main reason for gynecology visits. Menstruation is a normal physiological phenomenon for females indicating her capability for procreation. Menstrual problems are common in adolescent girls, which may affect their life and outdoor activities. Adolescent girls with abnormal body mass index (BMI) suffer even more often. This study aimed to To assess the relationship between Menstrual Cycle Disorders and Symptoms Menstrual Cycle with BMI among adolescent school in MTs Bustanul Ulum. This study was a cross-sectional study conducted among 30 adolescent school girls of MTs Bustanul Ulum. Permission was obtained from principal of the school and written informed consent was taken from the parents of the school girls before taking part in the study. MC disorders included amenorrhoea, polymenorrhea, oligomenorrhoea, hypermenorrhoea and hypomenorrhoea. MC-related symptoms included dysmenorrhoea and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). All the data were collected, entered, and analyzed in SPSS 17.0. The data were analyzed using percentages and proportions through tables. Out of 30 adolescent girls, 19 (63.3%) were having a BMI 18.5, which implies that 50% of the girls were undernourished. Only 2 (6.7%) of adolescent girls were overweight. Adolescent girls who have a BMI 18.5 experience more symptoms and problems associated with menstrual cycles. This difference was statistically significant. Menstrual problems especially dysmenorrhea are frequent among adolescent girls. BMI play a very vital role for menstrual cycle regularity. Consequently, adolescent girls have to be given healthy and balance nutrition, which leads to maintenance of their normal BMI and regulate their menstrual cycle.

Abstract

The signs of adolescence include physical changes driven by hormonal shifts. Among the complaints experienced by adolescent girls during menstruation is dysmenorrhea, often caused by a progesterone hormone imbalance. This hormonal imbalance triggers uterine contractions and stimulates pain responses in adolescent girls, especially at the onset of menstruation. Abdominal Stretching Exercise is a non-pharmacological therapy that can alleviate dysmenorrhea. The research aimed to determine the impact of Abdominal Stretching Exercise on the intensity of dysmenorrhea among adolescent girls at the Nurul Barokah Al-Islami Islamic Boarding School in Buring Kedungkandang, Malang City. The study utilized an experimental approach with a one-group pre-post-test design. The intervention occurred during menstruation from the first to the third day, with a daily duration of 20 minutes. The research population comprised 32 adolescent girls experiencing primary dysmenorrhea. The sample included 32 adolescent girls selected through total sampling. Data collection utilized the Faces Pain Scale-Revised (FPS-R) for pain assessment. Data analysis was performed using the Paired Sample t-test. The research results showed a p-value of 0.000 (α 0.05), indicating that Abdominal Stretching Exercise had an impact on the intensity of dysmenorrhea among adolescent girls at the Nurul Barokah Al-Islami Islamic Boarding School in Buring Kedungkandang, Malang City. The application of Abdominal Stretching Exercise proved effective in reducing the intensity of dysmenorrhea in adolescent girls. This therapy can serve as an alternative option to alleviate dysmenorrhea symptoms.

Abstract

Stunting remains a threat to Indonesia's future generations. Local plants with high nutritional content include moringa leaves. This study aims to determine the level of acceptance of the subjects toward the combination of moringa leaves and eel sausage formulation and to assess the effectiveness of the sausage formulation in improving the weight and height of infants. This study uses an experimental method involving 30 toddlers, with subjects taken using purposive sampling. This study was divided into a treatment group and a control group. The study subjects consisted of 30 toddlers (15 toddlers in the treatment group and 15 toddlers in the control group). Data analysis included organoleptic testing to measure subjects' preference for the sausage formulation and a Paired-sample t-test to assess the formulation's effectiveness in improving weight and height. The results of the study showed that the average level of preference of mothers of toddlers during the organoleptic test of moringa leaves and eel sausage in terms of aroma and taste was rated as very good, while the criteria of color and texture were rated as good. There was an increase in the weight of infants before and after being given moringa leaves and eel sausage. The average weight of toddlers before being given moringa leaves and eel sausage was 15.33 kg and after being given moringa leaves and eel sausage, the average weight of toddlers increased by 0.48 kg to 15.81 kg. Meanwhile, the average height of toddlers before being given moringa leaves and eel sausage was 102.07 cm and after being given moringa leaves and eel sausage, the average height of toddlers increased by 0.6 cm to 102.67 cm. The conclusion of the study confirms that the formulation of moringa leaves and eel sausage has the potential to positively impact the increase in toddler weight.
