Abstract

This research examines the concept of elderly transcendence by questioning the individualistic assumptions in the Gerotranscendence theory developed by Lars Tornstam (1943-2016), a Swedish sociologist. Gerotranscendence is the shift experienced by elders from self-centered interests to broader, more transcendent perspectives. This theory states that such transcendence occurs through personal reflection and withdrawal from social life. However, in the context of Indonesia's collective culture, this research identified a problem: does transcendence depend only on individual reflection, or can it also be achieved through meaningful social interaction? To answer this question, the study used a phenomenological qualitative method involving 12 elderly people who are active in majelis taklim in urban Indonesia. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and participatory observation, then analyzed using a thematic approach. The results show that the elderly's participation in religious activities not only deepens their spiritual dimension, but also enriches life reflection and strengthens social relationships. The study resulted in the concept of “Collective Transcendence”, which asserts that achieving transcendence is not only through personal reflection but also supported by social and community interactions. As such, the findings encourage the development of Gerotranscendence theory to better suit collective culture and support religious community-based elderly welfare programs.

Abstract

The issue of tolerance is actually related to the articulation of discourse and the realization of practices in real life. Both are interrelated and support each other for the creation of good relations among religious communities. Unfortunately, what becomes the daily reality is not supported by a good discourse articulation. As a result, there is tension in discourse among the people of Pandeglang when discussing tolerance. This study focuses on the views of the Pandeglang community regarding tolerance among religious communities. The initial interest in conducting this study is due to the fact that in Pandeglang, there is not a single non-Muslim place of worship built there. Looking at the composition of its population, there are several non-Muslim communities living amidst the predominantly Muslim community.

Abstract

For a long time, Indonesia has been an interesting locus of study regarding the relationship between tradition and modernity. By taking the case study of the Banten champions, this paper reveals the dominance of the Banten champions (rooted in local tradition) over modern devices such as bureaucracy, mass organizations, political parties, and business-oriented institutions. As a sociopolitical study, this research examines the role of champions in attempting to obtain and maintain their dominance in the Banten region. They spread the slogan "Defend Yourself, Defend the Nation, Defend the State" to the community. This slogan is nothing but a reflection of the knowledge, beliefs, and value systems they adhere to, which serve as a reference for their behavior in society, which is actually counterproductive to the establishment of civil society.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out. Based on the background description above, a problem can be drawn, namely: How is the organizational performance of the Class II B Kudus State Detention Center implemented in improving public services and what are the obstacles that occur in implementing the organizational performance of the Class II B Kudus State Detention Center in improving public services? This research uses a sociological juridical approach. Sociological juridical approach, namely a research approach that examines the legal perceptions and behavior of people (humans and legal entities) and society as well as the effectiveness of the enactment of positive law in society. Implementation of the performance of the Class II B Kudus Prison in improving public services is reflected in the decision to accept prisoners, even though its main function is accepting prisoners. This is due to the unique situation in Kudus Regency which does not yet have a prison, forcing the Class IIB Kudus Detention Center to adapt and meet public needs in the criminal justice system. As a result, the detention center not only handles detainees but also inmates, having a broader impact on the criminal justice system and Kudus Regency society in general. This statement also highlights the relationship between legal structure, legal substance and legal culture in the context of public services

Abstract

The prevalence of online gambling among college students is increasing due to its accessibility and the significant influence of the social environment. One important element that can both encourage and discourage people from participating in this activity is peer groups. Previous research has tended to focus on only one aspect of peer group influence, and there aren't many studies that thoroughly address the multiple roles that peers play in students' online gambling decisions. Using Albert Bandura's social learning theory, this study attempts to examine how peer group social dynamics influence college students' online gambling behaviors. Using a qualitative approach, this study conducted in-depth interviews with 28 Islamic university students from different social contexts and observed their online gambling activities. The results showed that students in the peer group who gambled experienced a process of observation, retention, reproduction, and social reinforcement that increased their engagement. In contrast, students in the non-gambling peer group received negative reinforcement and social support to refrain from the behavior. These findings support the importance of peer-based prevention strategies. Therefore, campuses and stakeholders need to strengthen student communities that instill anti-gambling values and provide positive and educational alternative activities.

Abstract

This research aims to understand how the beliefs and sacred sites of the Pitu Village community are analyzed through Mircea Eliade's theory. This study is qualitative, utilizing mixed interviews, observation, and documentation. The results indicate that the concept of the sacred in the beliefs of the Pitu Village community has been present since the community was formed. The Kinah Gadung Wulung tree and Telogo Guyangan become hierophanies. Sacred rituals are focused on the pond, which is believed to be a place of efficacy. The cosmos manifested in the Pitu Village community also serves as the axis mundi for the community, located at Telaga Guyangan. Ancestral teachings serve as a blueprint to protect them from chaos, including the prohibition on the number of family cards, which must total seven, forming the basis for the village structure and representing an imago mundi. Pitu Village is distinct in its presence of ancestors and elders as elements of the Sacred, receiving special rituals and becoming axis mundi takes the form of a human because in the life of the Kampung Pitu community, they must firmly hold on to their teachings and seek advice when they want to carry out something.
