Abstract

Flavonoids and phenolics are compounds with hydroxyl groups (-OH) bound to aromatic rings which enable them to react with reactive oxygen species and eliminate free radical activity. Single bulb garlic (Allium sativum var. solo garlic) is known to have antioxidant activity which comes from the phenolic groups. This study aims to determine the correlation of total flavonoid and phenolic levels with the antioxidant activity of ethanolic extracts from single bulb garlic grown in Magetan and Tawangmangu regions. This study included an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design. Total flavonoid levels were measured by colorimetric method and total phenolic levels were measured by Folin-ciocalteu method using Spectrophotometric UV-Vis. Antioxidant activity was measured by DPPH method at a wavelength of 517 nm. The data analysis used was multiple linear regression. The results showed that the extract of single bulb garlic from Magetan had total flavonoids of 12,1833 0,1943 mg QE/gram, total phenolics of 70,244 mg GAE/gram, and antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 20,216 ppm. The extract of single bulb garlic from Tawangmangu contained total flavonoids of 14,4833 0,5911 mg QE/gram, total phenolics of 92,222 mg GAE/gram, and antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 13,777 ppm. The conclusion of this study is that there is a significant correlation of total flavonoid and total phenolic content with antioxidant activity.

Abstract

Abstract Irrational drug use is still a public health problem in Indonesia, especially among teenagers who often practice self-medication without sufficient knowledge regarding the correct use of drugs. The DAGUSIBU (Get, Use, Store and Dispose of Medicines Correctly) program is an educational program initiated by the Indonesian Pharmacists Association to increase public awareness of proper medication management. This community service activity aims to increase the knowledge of MAN 2 Semarang City students regarding the DAGUSIBU concept through the Teen Pharmacist program (APORE). The activity method is carried out through socialization, interactive discussions, and evaluation using pre-test and post-test methods. The activity participants were 45 students who were members of the school organization, namely Palang Merah Remaja (PMR), consisting of classes XI and XII. The results of the activity showed that there was an increase in students' knowledge after education regarding DAGUSIBU regarding how to obtain, use, store and dispose of medicines correctly. This was obtained from an increase in the average score from 8.78 to 9.87 with the Paired t-test showing a value of p = 0.089 (p > 0.05), so that the increase was not statistically significant in statistical analysis. Qualitatively, participants showed. increased understanding of the aspect of using medicines according to the label and selecting a safe place to obtain medicines, however, weaknesses were still found in aspects of storing and disposing of medicines. These findings indicate that one counseling session is not optimal for the elderly group, so that educational interventions that are structured, repeated, and supported by multisensory media are needed to maximize understanding and change behavior in drug management. The Teen Pharmacist Program is expected to become an agent of health education in the school and community environment so that it can increase public awareness regarding the rational use of drugs. Keywords: DAGUSIBU; teen pharmacist; drug education; rational drug use .
