Abstract

Abstract: The difference of culture is a primary characteristic of the intercultural communication. Cultural difference implies to the different communication behavior. These differences raise various communication problems in which its solution needs certain communication competence. Cultural difference in estate system in Indonesia was started by dualistic economy reality and it turns to the raise of the cultural dualism. In one side big estate is oriented to modern capitalism (nucleus estate), and another side small holders (plasma farmer) is oriented to the traditional pre-capitalism. They develop intercultural communication competence by establishing strategy of convergent and divergent adaptation. The difference between nucleus estate and plasma farmer is based on the differences of existence in the orientation of farming and structural tightness. The communities of nucleus estate have culture that take root in economic interests (commercial). Meanwhile some of farmer communities are oriented to family and the communities’ interest. Standardization of existence and control towards job is a part of structural tightness characteristic and nucleus estate’s masculinity. However there are a few modern farmers that begin to concern to the business. This study also shows the adaptation strategy in the communication behavior is applied by nucleus estate people. Adaptation strategy is divided into two strategies: (1) convergent strategy manifested by the adjustment in other party’s communication behavior, meanwhile the divergent strategy manifested by the show of the different behavior appearance as their culture identity.

Abstract

This research was a qualitative research aiming at understanding the cultural differences and intercultural adaptation on partnership relation of core-plasma plantation in Tea Estate of Pagilaran Ltd Co, Indonesia. Collecting data were done by depth interviewing the worker’s core plantation and the plasma farmer concerning problems faced by both relationship. The results showed that culture of core plantation community tended to orientate to economical aspect with commercial basis, meanwhile culture of the farmers tended to orientate to group’s interest and to keep on their relationship among them with traditional habit and ecological sound. In relation to adaptation process, the two communities seemed to develop similar culture with capital interest. In this regards the similar cultures can be seen in two sides: from the side of core plantation, people working in the core plantation are come from similar culture with the indigenous farmers and the factory is also located in the farmer’s area. Meanwhile from the point of view of farmers, the similar culture as the result of cultural adaptation. Furthermore, the cultural differences shown by the core plantation and plasma farmer communities were due to the normative rules maintained by the company and also due to the different educational level and knowledge of both. To that respect, in core plantation community, the culture orientated to capital achievement implies the communication attitude on the business interest, where as the communication attitude of farmer community is more orientated to local interest using informal and interpersonal channel. Finally the communication differences in the two communities impede the process of organizational objective. And the communication attitude of the core plantation community is changed and unified with the communication attitude of plasma farmer.

Abstract

The theoritical analysis is inspired by the labor riot occurred in Drydocks World Graha Shipyards Company in Batam April 22, 2010. This case has reminded us to consider the importance of diversity management for business organization. Such organization has a reality of cultural diversity in its employees and usually it is a multinational company. Such company has grown and expanded in accordance with the development of the global economic order. The reality of cultural diversity actually can be positive forces to sustain the dynamics of the organization, but if not properly managed it can make the negative impact of disadvantageous communication climate. It can enrich the communication climate practices of racism and discrimination. The goal of diversity management is to maximize the positive forces of cultural diversity and to minimize its negative impacts. Management of diversity is itself a way of managing an organization that requires the multicultural paradigm. Inter-group conflict management is an integral part of the management of diversity. At the group level, it is necessary to understand the factors of inter-group conflict. When the conflict as the adverse effect of cultural diversity occurs, that is needed is a constructive management. Parties who have a burden of adaptation should be accommodative to other parties. Accommodation is conducted in the way of viewing the conflict, attitudes, and management style. It is also needs to be developed a communication climate that may reduce the prejudices which is the source of the practices of racism and discrimination.

Abstract

Abstract

The research focuses on communication based on local wisdom for sustainable development, with a case study on the planning of a Micro Hydro Power Plant (MHPP) in Kalisonggo Hamlet, Pendoworejo Village, Girimulyo Sub-district, Kulon Progo Regency. The purpose of this study is to explain how local wisdom needs to be considered for sustainable development. The method used is a case study. Primary data collection was conducted through interviews and with an appreciative inquiry approach. This data is supported by secondary data. The conceptual framework used includes the ecological ethics of Kohei Saito, pre-capitalism in Asia by J. H. Boeke, and the inter- and transdisciplinary approach to sustainability communication. The research found that communication in the pre-initiation phase of MHPP development did not show the involvement of social experts and the community in the feasibility study activities to provide input, guidance, and information about local wisdom. Yet, the MHPP program being planned will be handed over to the community for management. Besides not ensuring the sustainability of a program, development that is not based on local wisdom impacts the marginalization of environmental ecosystem issues. The conclusion drawn is that communication based on local wisdom for sustainable development is a communication strategy to obtain comprehensive information about customs, traditions, social systems, and culture. Moreover, this strategy also expands and deepens efforts to involve various experts in an interdisciplinary manner and communities that have mastery of local wisdom. Therefore, the author recommends the need for an inter- and transdisciplinary approach in the planning activities of the MHPP development project and an understanding of communal-oriented ecological ethics for sustainable development.
