Abstract

ABSTRACT This research was to investigate rates of extramural English (EE) activities among college students of English in an EFL (English as a foreign language) context of Indonesia correlated with several factors such as perceived English competence, genders, and amount of use of different language skills. As many as 161 respondents from 7 English departments across Indonesia took part in this research by responding to a set of questionnaires developed in Google Forms and distributed to the student respondents through WhatsApp groups, emails, and Facebook with the help of their lecturers. The results indicate that first, all respondents did EE activities with various degrees of intensity with a similar pattern of choice activities across levels of students’ perceived English competence. Second, EE receptive skill activities were more frequently practiced than productive ones. When all skills are correlated against perceived competence, the reading showed the highest value of the correlation index (0.612). Reading activities also were the most practiced regardless of the level of competence. This research also found that male students were more active in EE use. Next, most respondents showed more frequency of online EE activities than offline ones. They did not, however, do much face-to-face (FTF) communication when outside the classroom. In this respect, providing more motivation and more frequency for virtual EE practice should be necessary to promote beyond EE use. School’s recognition of students’ EE activities thus beyond classroom learning, has to be enabled. This way, a composite model of formal-informal learning will help the process of the acquisition of English to the maximum. The finding covers the intrinsic aspects of the play such as plot, setting, and characters that reflect the theme of the play. The themes of “Romeo and Juliet” are the love between Romeo and Juliet, the hate between two family, and also death. Romeo and Juliet are secretly getting married however their love becomes a tragedy when they have to overcome their family’s conflict. Abstract

Metaphors were frequently found in songs and raised curiosity among the listeners to find out the true meaning. The songs released by Madison Beer are interesting to be discussed. Madison Beer is a young American singer, model, and songwriter who is known worldwide. She released her debut single “Melodies” in 2013. In 2018 Beer released her debut EP, “As She Pleases”. Her songs are full of romantic, yet sad stories relate to real life of female teenagers. The writer applied library research and qualitative descriptive research which intentionally reveals the types of metaphors in her two selected songs; “Follow The White Rabbit” from her Album Life Support, and “Reckless”, a single from Silence Between Songs. The objective of this research is conducted by applying George Lakoff and Johnson’s theory about types of metaphors such as structural metaphor, a metaphor which put one concept into another concept, orientation metaphor which deals with a spatial orientation that is derived from physical and cultural experiences, and ontological metaphor related to the experience of physical objects and substances. The first song “Follow The White Rabbit” tells about a story of a relationship. This song was strongly influenced by the movies The Matrix (Film) and Alice in Wonderland (Film). “Reckless” tells a sad story about betrayal in relationship which is sweetly performed by Beer. Furthermore, the writer found 16 data of metaphors, 9 structural metaphor, 5 ontological metaphor, and 2 orientation metaphor.

Abstract

This paper examines the linguistic and functional characteristics of American slang within the film script of Whiplash (2014), written by Damien Chazelle. It categorizes slang based on linguistic features and discusses their roles in portraying character relationship, emotional intensity, and group-based identity in a high-pressure music academy setting. The study finds that slang in Whiplash functions not just as informal language, but as a purposeful communicative strategy. It facilitates peer interaction, expresses strong emotion, and strengthen group identity, while also serving as a tool for social division, pressure, and control. These expressions reflect a range of linguistic features – such as ellipsis, rhythm, creativity, vulgarity, and ephemerality – that mirror the demanding environment of competitive jazz. Ultimately, the film demonstrates how slang can function as both a bonding mechanism and a form of domination, highlighting the powerful relationship between language, power, and identity.
