Abstract

Nyepi is a Hindu’s holy day which is celebrated by the Balinese to commemorate the new year Çaka. Nyepi is very uniquecelebration because it is celebrated by eliminating all routines. Nyepi as a religious tradition and ritual can make a real contribution to the preservation of nature. The series of Nyepi ceremonies starts from melasti, nyejer, tawur kesanga, Nyepi day and ends with ngembak geni. The essence of the celebration of the Nyepi Holy Day is Catur Brata Penyepian consisting of: amati geni (not light a fire), amati karya (not working), amati lelungan (not traveling), and amati lelanguan (not eating and enjoying entertainment). At a higher level, Catur Brata Penyepian leads Hindus to hone their quality of self by controlling the inner flames of lust, eliminating physical work to increase spiritual work, increase the inner race, and not fixating on the pleasures of the world. With this understanding, a series of Nyepi ceremonies can be used as a means of discovering true truth within oneself, such as the teachings of yoga. The Astangga Yoga concept presents eight stages of yoga namely yama, nyama, āsana, prānāyāma, pratyāhāra, dhārana, dhyāna and samādhi. Astangga Yoga has been applied in the implementation of the Nyepi Holy Day series by clearing the senses to achieve true truth. The teachings of yoga dissolve in Nyepi Holy Day ceremonial activities which are carried out earnestly and wholeheartedly.

Abstract

Dadap (Erythrina sumbubrans), a plant native to Bali, has been one of the foundations of Balinese ethnomedicine and Hindu ceremonies for centuries. delves into the multifaceted role of Dadap in traditional healing practices and its cultural significance within Hinduism. The plant is characterized by its expansive green, heart-shaped leaves and vibrant red flowers, which are highly valued for their medicinal and spiritual properties. In Hindu ceremonies, Dadap is respected as "kayu sakti," a sacred wood believed to possess magical powers. Its leaves are used in various rituals, including the Pitra Yadnya and Dewa Yadnya ceremonies, where they serve as guiding woods to ensure the deceased find a favorable path to Brahman. The plant`s bioactivity and phytochemical composition have been extensively studied, revealing its potential as an anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antipyretic, and antimalarial agent. The Usada Taru Pramana Lontar, a traditional Balinese healing text, provides detailed information on the medicinal uses of Dadap. The text describes how the plant's leaves, bark, and roots can be used to treat various ailments, including fever, internal bleeding, and digestive disorders. Scientific studies have validated these traditional uses, demonstrating the efficacy of Dadap extracts in reducing body heat and alleviating pain. This article aims to contribute to the preservation of Balinese cultural heritage by examining the empirical and scientific evidence supporting the medicinal and spiritual significance of Dadap. It highlights the potential for modernizing traditional medicine practices in Bali, while also emphasizing the importance of understanding the phytochemical properties of the plant to ensure safe and effective use.

Abstract

This study examines religious coexistence between Hinduism and Buddhism at Goa Gajah Temple, Bali, through the perspective of Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann’s theory of social construction and its relevance to strengthening religious moderation. The study employs a qualitative-interpretive approach, with data collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and literature review. Data were analyzed by interpreting archaeological remains, religious symbols, historical contexts, and information from relevant informants. The findings indicate that the coexistence of Śaiva and Buddhist traditions at Goa Gajah can be understood through the processes of externalization, objectivation, and internalization. Archaeological evidence, including lingga, Ganesha, bathing structures, stupas, Dhyani Buddha statues, and Hariti, demonstrates the presence of both traditions within a shared sacred landscape. This coexistence reflects values of tolerance, non-violence, acceptance of local traditions, and shared social life, which remain relevant to contemporary religious moderation. Keywords: Goa Gajah; religious coexistence; Śaiva-Buddhist; social construction; religious moderation.
