Abstract

Discourse about divinity in the Vedas is so extensive that it has produced many documents from reflection and in-depth study of the pursuit of God. This Brahmavidya-Upanisad is the centerpiece of the 39th Upanisad of 112 Upanisads translated by board scholars. This Brahmavidya-Upanisad is the result of contemplative research by ancient sages who used the paravidya-apaparavidya approach. This approach is a holistic approach, namely the paravidya approach is related to the investigation of the microcosm, and the aparavidya approach is related to the investigation of the macrocosm. The paravidya approach is a spiritual approach (subjective) and the aparavidya approach is a material approach (positive objective). The integration of this positivistic subjective-objective approach is a harmonious-integrative approach called a holistic approach, a blend of spirituality and science. The results of integrative contemplative research on the cOṁbination of spiritual-science found that the macrocosm and microcosm are the same but differ in intensity. The results of the research of these sages have given space for mankind to seek God within themselves or to seek God in all His creations that are in front of humans. There is nothing worse or better than man's search for God. If he is a layman then he can seek and place God outside of himself; but for spiritualists can worship God inside or outside themselves or both. This is a form of theology of freedOṁ and theology of liberation that can liberate humans frOṁ alienation frOṁ God.

Abstract

Humans are the most perfect of all creatures, because only humans possess the ability to distinguish between the eternal and the transient. Furthermore, humans possess the awareness that they are not a material body, but the Atman, which is identical with Brahman. Advaita Vedanta theology and philosophy teach that Brahman pervades the universe. Therefore, Brahman and the Universe and all its contents are one. The Universe and all its contents are the material body of Brahman. Therefore, a practical understanding of Brahman can be observed through the Rtams, or Laws of Nature.Awareness of the Atman in humans is paramount in human life. Through awareness of the Atman, humans understand the existence of God behind all things. Awareness of the Atman makes humans wise, able to perceive God's presence in all things, as the Chandogya Upanisad states, "sarva khalv idam brahman," meaning "everything is God." Thus, Advaita Vedanta teaches that God, as the Subtle Substance, permeates all atomic particles of the Universe. Thus, all natural phenomena are a Cosmic Dance known as the Sivanataraja Dance or the Tandava Dance. Therefore, Rtam, or the Laws of Nature, can be used as a medium of contemplation to discover the traces of the Creator behind all natural phenomena. This research is qualitative, with data in the form of a summary of words obtained through literatures. Using Symbol Theory and Qualitative Interpretive Analysis, the authors conclude that the Laws of Nature are a manifestation of the dance of universal Truth (Satyam), which possesses the values of universal Virtue (Sivam) and universal Beauty (Sundaram). Humans who possess a perspective in accordance with the teachings of Advaita Vedanta will be able to see and experience the world and all its natural phenomena as an expression of Satyam, Sivam Sundaram, or a blissful Heaven.

Abstract

The mendem panca dhatu ritual is a sacred practice of Balinese Hindus performed in the context of constructing and purifying holy sites. This ritual affirms the Balinese cosmological worldview that emphasizes harmony between humans, nature, and the divine through reverence for natural elements as instruments of spiritual purification and symbols of cosmic interconnectedness. However, amid modernization and the shifting values of religiosity, the meaning of this ritual tends to be simplified, potentially neglecting the profound ethical and spiritual dimensions embedded within it. This condition calls for an in-depth study to reveal the substantive meaning of the ritual as an expression of religious consciousness and as a value system that sustains the social, moral, and ecological life of Balinese society sustainably. This study aims to examine the ethical and spiritual values within the mendem panca dhatu ritual in Desa Adat Delod Tukad by employing the concepts of shuddha-bhava (inner purity) and cinmaya-bhava (spiritual awareness) as its main analytical framework. The research applies a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. Informants were selected purposively, involving traditional leaders, priests, and community ritual practitioners. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and literature review of lontar manuscripts, religious texts, and previous studies. Data validation was conducted through source triangulation, methodological triangulation, and member checking to ensure the credibility of the findings. The results indicate that the ethical values of the ritual function as moral guidance and social legitimacy that strengthen communal solidarity. Spiritually, the ritual emphasizes human connectedness with the transcendent through disciplined purity, self-control, and collective awareness in maintaining sacred spaces. The synergy of ethics, spirituality, and cultural identity in this ritual underscores its relevance to the preservation of religious traditions, the formation of social morality, and the maintenance of cosmic harmony within Balinese Hindu society.
