Abstract

This research aims to investigate students’ errors in transforming active into passive sentences of simple past tense. This research is descriptive. The population of this research was the second-year students at Bung Hatta University English Department. A total sampling technique was applied in this research where there were 30 students involved in this study. The instrument for collecting the data was a writing test. To make the test reliable the researcher used the inter-rater technique. It was found that the reliability index of the test was 0.99 (very high correlation), which means that the test is reliable. The writing test is valid in terms of content because it covered all materials that students had learned. The result of this test showed that students make 1134.5 errors. It can be classified from the highest to the lowest errors: such as misformation (47.55%), misordering (26.80%), omission (23.45%), and addition (2.20%). This study recommends some future research to find out what the best solutions are to manage the best teaching practices to minimize the students’ errors in writing

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine the relationship between students' proficiency in simple past tense grammar and their ability to write a short narrative movie at Bung Hatta University's English Department. This study employed a correlational research design, with 30 participants from a pool of 37 students. Two tests were used to collect data, namely grammar and writing tests. This study discovered a positive correlation between grammar mastery and writing skills indicating that students who excel at grammar also have better writing skills in this study. This research suggested that English lecturers should motivate their students to watch more short films to improve their writing and grammar skills. On the other hand, students should engage in more grammar exercises in order to improve their writing skills, especially when writing narrative texts. To sum up, this research's findings underscore the significance of grammar mastery in developing writing abilities, particularly in narrative writing, and the value of incorporating visual aids like movies (i.e. short YouTube films) into language instruction to encourage students to enhance their writing and grammar skills.

Abstract

This study was to confirm a significant correlation between students' engagement with English YouTube podcasts and their listening skills. This co-relational research studied students of grade XI IPS-1 at SMAN 1 Solok Selatan of West Sumatra Province selected from some cluster random sampling technique comprising 36 students. The research employed a listening test and a set of questionnaires to collect the data. As a result of data analysis, this research revealed a positive correlation between the intensity of students' engagement with English YouTube podcasts and their listening skills. The calculated correlation coefficient (r_calculated) for this research was 0.717, surpassing the critical value (r_table) of 0.329 at a significance level of 0.05 and degrees of freedom (df = n - 2). This indicates that the calculated correlation was higher than the critical value (0.717 >0.329). To conclude, the research accepted the alternative hypothesis, affirming a significant correlation between students' intensity in watching English YouTube podcasts and their listening skills. Considering these findings, it is recommended that teachers incorporate YouTube podcasts into their teaching resources, creating a more engaging learning environment and motivating students to use YouTube for educational purposes, thereby enhancing their listening skills. Furthermore, students are encouraged to actively work on improving their listening skills by exploring various YouTube channels, including podcasts and other English audio resources. These efforts will contribute significantly to their language proficiency individually.
