Abstract

Abstract This community service activity aims to introduce problem solving skills to students at YPPK Santu Paulus Middle School, Abepura, Jayapura, using three problem solving learning activities namely Opinion Problem Solving, Logical Thinking Problem Solving and Information Gap Problem Solving. This is based on the finding where the average student at this school still has difficulties in understanding and solving story-shaped questions (Matthew, Lumbantobing, & Tandililing, 2016). These activity use the lecture method in the form of direct teaching/training in online classroom learning through an LMS owned by the school, carried out for one month starting from the design of learning materials and equipment, the assessment is carried out through observation and video recording, as well as filling out questionnaires via google form. related to the evaluation of class VIIIB students at YPPK Santu Paulus Junior High School, Jayapura. The results of the implementation of this service activity indicate that students understand the importance of having problem-solving skills starting from identifying problems, alternative solutions, determining the best solution logically through identifying gaps/problems and the importance of practicing expressing opinions, jointly solving problems and finding solutions in solving problems. solve existing problems. Abstrak Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan memperkenalkan kemampuan memecahkan masalah kepada siswa di SMP YPPK Santu Paulus, Abepura, Jayapura, melalui kegiatan belajar menggunakan tiga kegiatan pembelajaran problem solving activity dalam dua kegiatan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris Opinion Problem Solvingy, Logical Thinking Problem Solving dan Information Gap Problem Solving. Hal ini didasari atas temuan penelitian sebelumnya dimana rata-rata siswa di sekolah ini masih memiliki kesulitan dalam memahami dan menyelesaikan soal berbentuk cerita (Matius, Lumbantobing, & Tandililing, 2016). Kegiatan ini menggunakan metode ceramah dalam bentuk pengajaran/pelatihan langsung dalam pembelajarna di kelas secara online melalui LMS yang dimiliki oleh sekolah, dilaksanakan selama satu bulan mulai dari perancangan materi dan perangkat oembelajaran, penilaian dilakukan melalui observasi dan video recording, juga pengisian angket melalui google form terkait evaluasi terhadap siswa kelas VIIIB di SMP YPPK Santu Paulus, Jayapura. Hasil pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian ini menunjukkan bahwa siswa menyatakan menjadi paham akan pentingnya memiliki kemampuan memecahkan masalah mulai dari mengidentifikasi masalah, solusi alternative, menentukan solusi trebaik dengan logis melalui identifikasi kesenjangan/masalah dan pentingnya berlatih mengeluarkan pendapat, bersama-sama memecahkan masalah dan mencari solusi dalam menyelesaikan masalah yang ada.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to introduce through the use of traditional games modified to suit the characteristics of elementary school children, where play is essentially a child’s world while the development of technological innovation encourages children to play individually or interact less with others and their enviroment. In addition, this community service activity also aims to increase love and pride in traditional games that have cultural content and local wisdom and also have the potential to improve children’s critical thinking skills, because traditional games have been played for generations and always create a sense of unity and beautiful memories until someone is an adult. This community service activities were carried out at SD Negeri Inpres Perumnas IV, located in a residential complex in Heram District, Jayapura city, with 275 students (150 boys and 125 girls) and 12 study groups, located in a land area of 1,551 M2 flanked by residential areas, the GKI Kanaan church, a mosque, and a community health center, making the play space quite narrow for the students. The activity began with an explanation of the origins of the traditional Papuan game oro kino-kino combined with the Simon Says game, followed by an explanation of how to play, cultural values, demonstrations of game modifications, and play sessions.  The results obtained showed that students were motivated to learn and master English, proud to have fun traditional games and can learn while playing and critically determine several English statements to do and not to do, teacherswere motivated to develop more fun and meaningful learning such as using traditional games in their teaching and learning classess of English.
