Abstract

TITLEThe relationship between oral hygiene status and learning achievement of students in SD Negeri 2 Sangga Beru, Gunung Meriah, Aceh SingkilABSTRACTDental and oral health is art of physical health which cannot be separated from one to each other. The main problem is that many school children are affected by caries which can decrease their learning ability. The objective of the research was to find out the correlation between dental and oral health status and elementary school students’ learning performance. The research used analytic descriptive method with cross sectional study design. The samples were 70 elementary school students, taken by using random sampling technique. Primary data were gathered by conducting clinical examination and secondary data by finding out progress report cards. The gathered data were analyzed by using bivatriate analysis with chi square statistic test. The result of the research showed that 50% of the respondents had good dental and health status (def-t and DMF-T), 32.9% of them had moderate def-t and DMF-T, and 17.1% of them had bad def-t and DMF-T. It was also found that 42.9% of the respondents had bad learning performance, 38.6% of them had moderate learning performance, and 18.6% of them had good learning performance. The result of chi square test showed that there was significant correlation between dental and oral health status and students’ learning performance at SDN 2 Sangga Beru, Gunung Meriah Subdistrict, Aceh Singkil District at p-value = 0.009 (p ≤ 0.05). The conclusion of the research was that dental and oral health status could influence learning performance.Key words : Dental and Oral Health Status, Learning Performance

Abstract

Oral health is important for general health and well-being and greatly affects the quality of life. Oral health problems will have an impact on a person's performance. The problem of high rates of dental and oral disease at this time is strongly influenced by several factors, including community behavior factors that are used as a culture or habit, one of which is the habit of chewing betel or areca nut (Nurjannah et al, 2010). According to Boediharjo (1988) plaque and calculus are also the main causes of periodontal disease. This disease can attack us at all ages, both in children and adults . This research is an analytic quantitative research with Case Control design with a simple linear regression analysis test, partially test the hypothesis (t test) and test the hypothesis Simultaneously (Test f). The population of all children aged 10-12 years is 150 people with samples, 30 were betel nut and 30 were not, the results obtained in this study were plaque statuson betel nut in the bad category (63.4%) and calculus status in the bad category (53.4%).

Abstract

This research was to determine the influence of dental hygiene care interventions (oral hygiene) to the reduction of plaque index of deaf students. It was a true experimental with randomi pre-post-test control group design. The measurements of plaque index performed with PHPM index in inspection sheet method. The plaque index are calculated from the amount of plaque scores in inspection sheet. Research was done over 49 respondents that divided into two groups: intervention groups and control groups. There was a significant difference of plaque index before and after the treatment. In intervention groups it decreased from the average of 35,7 to 10,4 (70,87%) with value p=0,001. Whether in control group it was also decreased from the average of 37,5 to 28,9 (22,93%) with value p=0,001. The average of plaque index reduction was also differ significantly between intervention groups (31,06 ) and control groups (12,0) with value p=0,001. Dental hygiene care intervention (oral hygiene) can reduce plaque index of deaf students. Suggestion: Dental hygiene care intervention (oral hygiene) should be delivered periodically to the deaf students by nurturing the habit brushing teeth twice a day completed with a written module, so that it can prevent the occurrence of oral diseases.
