Abstract

This study aimed to describe students' perceptions of using e-portfolio in writing descriptive text and to find out the impact of the use of e-portfolio in writing descriptive text. This research was conducted with a qualitative approach with a case study. The questionnaire, interview, and students’ artifacts were used in collecting the data. The participants in this research were 32 students from first grade (X MIPA) in Mekar Arum senior high school in Bandung, West Java. There were 32 students, consisting of 28 female and four male students, who were involved in this research. The result showed that E-portfolio is easy, efficient, and useful. E-portfolio help students improve their descriptive text writing cognitively. It also had a positive impact on students' writing. It was indicated by their artifacts, in relation to the use of e-portfolios in producing descriptive texts. The students perceived the use of e-portfolio in writing descriptive text as effective in writing descriptive text. It helped them develop in many ways, especially their cognitive writing in descriptive text. This study is limited to the effectiveness of the E-portfolio. It needs further investigation in terms of examining the effectiveness of E-portfolio in teaching descriptive text to more complex variables such as the genre and level of education.

Abstract

This quasi-experimental study examined the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in developing Grade VII students' skimming skills for descriptive text comprehension at SMPN 18 Bandung over four weeks. A total of 62 students participated in the study, divided equally into an experimental group (n=31) and a control group (n=31). Both groups were assessed using pre-test and post-test instruments. The experimental group, which received instruction through the PBL approach, showed a statistically significant improvement in their reading comprehension scores—from a pre-test average of 27.387 to a post-test average of 40.354 (gain = 12.967). In contrast, the control group, which received conventional instruction, improved from 25.354 to 36.387 (gain = 11.032). The results indicate that the PBL approach is more effective than traditional methods in enhancing students’ skimming skills and comprehension of descriptive texts. It is suggested that English teachers consider implementing Project-Based Learning as an alternative instructional strategy to improve reading comprehension and overall academic achievement.

Abstract

This classroom action research aimed to improve seventh-grade EFL students’ descriptive writing skills through the implementation of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) using the theme “Home Sweet Home.” The study applied a quantitative descriptive approach within a two-cycle CAR framework consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. A total of 28 students participated in the study. Data were collected through pre-tests, post-tests and observation sheets. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean and percentage), while qualitative insights from observations supported the interpretation. The average student score improved from 60.10 in the pre-cycle to 79.89 in cycle I, and 82.42 in cycle II. By the end of cycle II, 89.28% of students achieved the minimum mastery standard (≥70). Improvements were evident in students’ use of vocabulary, grammar (particularly there is/there are and prepositions), punctuation, text organization, and engagement. The results confirm that CTL is effective in fostering contextual understanding and enhancing descriptive writing skills in EFL classrooms.
