Abstract

Teachers often have difficulties in finding the appropriate learning materials in teaching reading. Without appropriate reading texts that suit them, students spend long hours in the classroom with poor achievement in reading comprehension.  This research aims to find out whether the use of authentic material can improve students' reading comprehension toward  Vocational High School Students. This research also conducted to describe and explain students' responses toward the implementation of the authentic material. Based on the aims of this research, the descriptive qualitative method chosen since it is suitable to give a clear description of this study, where twenty-nine of the students observed. The data obtained from pre-test and post-test, classroom observation and questionnaire. The result of the study reveals that the use of authentic material in teaching reading significantly improves students' reading comprehension. It recommended for the teachers to use authentic reading materials for a change. Besides, when bringing authentic materials into the classroom, it should be used following students' abilities, as well as with suitable tasks given.

Abstract

This paper is a part of a study on developing critical reading of teaching models to improve students’ critical thinking skills. It was conducted based on existing data that most of the students do not have critical reading skills. The purpose of this study was to make a suitable teaching model for students’ critical reading which was able to improve their critical thinking abilities. The method used in this writing was research and development. The instrument used in collecting data was observation, questionnaires, and interviews. The inquiry was conducted at Nusantara Islamic University by involving four classes as participants. Two of such classes belonged to the English Language Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Science while the other two belonged to the Communication Science Study Program, Faculty of Communication Sciences. The results found some information about the students’ reading activities and their understanding of critical readings. AbstrakPenelitian ini merupakan bagian dari penelitian pengembangan model ajar membaca kritis untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis mahasiswa. Penelitian dilakukan berdasarkan data bahwa sebagian besar mahasiswa belum memiliki kemampuan membaca kritis. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk membuat model pengajaran membaca kritis bagi mahasiswa yang sesuai dan diharapkan mampu meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis mereka. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian dan pengembangan. Instrumen yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data adalah observasi, kuesioner, dan interviu. Penelitian dilakukan di  Universitas Islam Nusantara dengan melibatkan empat kelas sebagai partisipan. Dua kelas di Program Studi Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pengetahuan dan dua kelas di Program Studi Ilmu Komunikasi, Fakultas Ilmu Komunikasi. Hasil penelitian ini telah menemukan data awal berupa informasi mengenai hal yang berkenaan dengan aktivitas membaca siswa dan pemahaman mereka mengenai membaca kritis.

Abstract

High-order thinking skills require people not only to remember what they have learned but to analyze and evaluate the information, and later create, use, and maximize the information. The objectives of the study is  to analyze the effect of  Jigsaw and CIRC Method on enhancing students’ reading HOTS in terms of different self-efficacy levels. This study implemented mixed methods. The study was conducted at the eleventh grade of SMAN 11 Bandung. Two classes with purposive sampling were participated in this study. The instrument were reading HOTS test supported by classroom observation.  Quantitative data were analyzed by Shapiro Wilk and Levene Test, continued by Wilcoxon Test, paired t-test, one-way ANOVA, two-way ANOVA, Mann Whitney test, and Pearson Chi-Square test, whereas the qualitative data were analyzed by content and thematic analysis.   The data revealed that the implementation of the Jigsaw Method was only effective on enhancing students' reading HOTS in low self-efficacy levels and could not enhance students' reading HOTS in moderate and high self-efficacy levels. Whereas, the implementation of the CIRC Method was not effective on enhancing students' reading HOTS in low, moderate, and high self-efficacy levels

Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing the maxim flouting between the teacher and students of XI IPS in SMA PGRI 2 Bandung during classroom interaction. The objective of this study is to find out the types of flouting maxim produced by teachers and students. Furthermore, this study also investigates the effects of maxims flouting to classroom activity. This study implements descriptive qualitative as the method of the study. There are five instruments used in this study; those are observation checklist, field note, the script of recorded video, questionnaire, and interview. The result of the study shows that there were four types of maxims flouting produced by the teacher and students during classroom interaction. Moreover, the researchers found four adverse effects of flouting maxim in classroom activity.

Abstract

The participation of mild intellectual disability children in school is important because it is a crucial problem of how intellectual disability people can get a job, become independent people, and can live without depending on others. This study intends to analyze the ability of mild intellectual disability students in social interaction and determine their ability to use language in one of the special needs schools in Bandung. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study design. The participants are mild intellectual disability students, English teachers, and school principals in SLB Wartawan in Bandung. The instruments used in this study were observation guidelines, filed notes, and interview guidelines. The data shows that two students categorize “poor”, ten students categorize “fair, and four students categorize “good” in having social interaction. It can be concluded that most students have a fair category in social interaction. Moreover, the data also reveal that from 16 students, four students categorize “poor”, nine students categorize "fair", and three students categorize "good" in their language ability to communicate with others in the classroom. It can be concluded that most mild intellectual disability students have a fair category in their language ability. The result of observation, fieldnotes and interview also show the activity of English language learning for mild intellectual disability students through blended learning during the pandemic.

Abstract

The objectives of the research are to find out the use of portfolio assessment of writing skill in descriptive text and the challenges faced by the teacher in the use of portfolio assessment of writing skill in descriptive text in SMP Negeri 1 Pagelaran Cianjur. The type of the research is qualitative research with case study method. In collecting the data, the researcher uses field notes, observation checklist, open-ended questionnaire, and documentation. The data were analyzed by reducing the non useful data, displaying the data, and drawing conclusion. The researcher uses data triangulation to get the validity of the data. Based on the research finding, the teacher implemented almost all the procedures of portfolio assessment proposed by Brown & Abeywickrama, the teacher designed the purpose of portfolio, the teacher designed the material of portfolio, the teacher designed the time of portfolio, the teacher designed the time for reviewing, the teacher designed the place for portfolio. The challenges faced by the teacher in the use of portfolio assessment of writing skill in descriptive text that the teacher has difficulties in giving feedback in a large class, less in controlling and guiding the students, and the teacher did not use the rubric for assessing the writing skill of the student’s task.

Abstract

The Critical Reading Learning Perceptions Using Children Story Through Blended Learning As An Implementation of MBKM ABSTRAKPenelitian ini dilakukan dengan tujuan untuk menganalisis implementasi pembelajaran membaca kritis dengan bahan ajar cerita anak melalui blended learning, dan mengevaluasi persepsi mahasiswa dan stakeholder terhadap pembelajaran membaca kritis cerita anak melalui blended learning sebagai   implementasi   kebijakan MBKM di Perguruan Tinggi. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode survey. Partisipan adalah 88 mahasiswa semester tiga dari Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Indonesia dan Bahasa Inggris. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah ceklist observasi, kuesioner dengan pertanyaan tertutup dan terbuka melalui google form. Analisis dari implementasi membaca kritis bahan ajar yang diberikan dengan blended learning menunjukkan bahwa selama pembelajaran mahasiswa memperoleh pengetahuan baru mengenai cara meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis melalui cerita anak. Dari kuesioner yang diberikan diperoleh informasi bahwa mahasiswa dan stakeholder memberikan respon yang positif dan memberikan opini bahwa membaca kritis dapat dilakukan pada bidang ilmu lain dan dianggap mampu meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis mahasiswa dan selanjutnya dapat diimplementasikan saat mengajar membaca pada anak usia dini.Kata kunci: membaca kritis, cerita anak, blended learningABSTRACTThe research is conducted to analyze the implementation of critical reading learning using children story through blended learning and to evaluate stakeholders and students towards critical reading learning through blended learning using children story as the implementation of MBKM in Higher Education. The research uses qualitative approach with survey design. The participants are 88 students from 2 studies program, those are English Education study program and Indonesian Education Study Program. The instruments to collect the data are observation checklist and questionnaire (open-ended and closed-ended) through google-form. The implementation analysis of critical reading of teaching materials provided with blended learning shows that during learning students gain new knowledge about how to improve critical thinking skills through children’s stories. From questionnaire given, information was obtained that students and stakeholders gave positive responses and gave opinions that critical reading can be done in other fields of science, and is considered capable of improving students’ critical thinking skills and can then be implemented when teaching reading to early childhood.Keyword: Critical Reading, Children Story, blended learning

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the meaning of the word “over” through syntactic and semantic analysis based on its structure. Moreover, this study also evaluates the features of the word “over” based on the structure whether they are used as an adverb, an adjective, a preposition, or a phrasal verb. This research employs qualitative descriptive research where the data are taken from the novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. As a result of data analysis, the researchers found that word over not only functions as a pure preposition, but also as an adverb, an adjective, and a phrasal verb. It can be seen from the position and function of the word “over” in a sentence. In semantic analysis, the particle “over” is analyzed as a pure preposition, an adverb, an adjective, and a phrasal verb based on the definition of “over” from two well-known dictionaries. Hopefully, the study result can be beneficial theoretically and practically for teachers or future researchers who were passionate about analyzing words from a syntactic and semantic point of view.

Abstract

In learning, a language teacher need a media to support the activity. Teaching media is a tool to make teaching learning process run effectively and efficiently. Tutorial video is a video to transfer information about how to achieve something through a set of instruction. This study aimed to analyze the implementation of tutorial video in learning writing on procedural text and to analyze the students’ responses towards the use of video in learning writing on procedural text. This research was conducted with a qualitative approach with a case study. The obervation, test, questionnaire and interview were used in collecting the data. The participant of this research were 30 students of X IPA in SMA Muhammadiyah Rancaekek. The result showed that by tutorial video helped their learning writing process and enhance their writing skill especially in vocabulary and content on procedural text. Therefore, this research conclusion showed student had good impact in their learning writing process and had positif responses on enhance their writing skills on procedural text.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe students' perceptions of using e-portfolio in writing descriptive text and to find out the impact of the use of e-portfolio in writing descriptive text. This research was conducted with a qualitative approach with a case study. The questionnaire, interview, and students’ artifacts were used in collecting the data. The participants in this research were 32 students from first grade (X MIPA) in Mekar Arum senior high school in Bandung, West Java. There were 32 students, consisting of 28 female and four male students, who were involved in this research. The result showed that E-portfolio is easy, efficient, and useful. E-portfolio help students improve their descriptive text writing cognitively. It also had a positive impact on students' writing. It was indicated by their artifacts, in relation to the use of e-portfolios in producing descriptive texts. The students perceived the use of e-portfolio in writing descriptive text as effective in writing descriptive text. It helped them develop in many ways, especially their cognitive writing in descriptive text. This study is limited to the effectiveness of the E-portfolio. It needs further investigation in terms of examining the effectiveness of E-portfolio in teaching descriptive text to more complex variables such as the genre and level of education.
