Abstract

Abstract

A case study is a research approach that focuses on one or multiple real-life cases as the subject, encompassing both concrete entities such as individuals, groups, or organizations, as well as abstract constructs like processes, networks, or projects. This approach is employed to in-deep investigate complex issues and has been applied in various disciplines, such as; the social sciences, humanities, management, psychology, and architecture. The specific characteristics of a case study involve thorough exploration and analysis, data collection from diverse sources, and identification of key themes within the case. The strength of case studies lies in their ability to combine quantitative and qualitative data, enabling researchers to gain a profound understanding of the processes and outcomes of a phenomenon. This study applies a systematic literature review from several credible scholar articles. Two architectural case study researches are selected as precedents to provide a concrete overview of the characteristics, strengths, weaknesses, and procedural framework of implementing the case study approach. Analysis is conducted by comparing various gathered data to discern the potential for case studies to contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the complexity of issues and the quest for their solutions.

Abstract

The history of Indonesian traditional architecture has not yet addressed the history of architecture itself; instead, it has only addressed national and regional universal history as a backdrop or ancestry. Furthermore, the sources mainly relied on Western paradigm-adhering written documents and literature rather than empirical sources from a specific cultural community, particularly oral traditions. As a result, the significance of historical context for the evolution of Indonesian architecture has diminished somewhat. Indeed, anthropology, archaeology, and history have long used ethnohistory as a research methodology. Furthermore, traditional architecture has been mentioned in these studies. How does one go about researching the history of traditional architecture using ethnohistory? The objectives of this research are to identify research trends on this topic as well as to discover novelty as a new direction for future studies. This study employs a systematic literature review (SLR) method to descriptively analyze a big dataset and examine the content of primary data selected from publications between 2013 and 2023. It indicates how very promising the research trend is for architecture science. Furthermore, this study develops three research focuses, approaches, implications and constraints in light of the data gathered and examined.

Abstract

Title: The Concept of Sacredness in the Architectural Design of Peter Zumthor; Case Study: Saint Benedict Chapel and Bruder Klaus Chapel The sacredness of space is crucial for Catholic worship, allowing the congregation to feel God's presence. Peter Zumthor's architecture prioritizes spatial ambiance by engaging all senses, using appropriate materials, and harmonizing buildings with their sites. His Saint Benedict Chapel and Bruder Klaus Chapel exemplify his design principles. This study uses a qualitative approach and descriptive analysis to explore Zumthor's design concepts and their impact on sacredness. Both chapels showcase his skill in using light, materials, and spatial forms to create a sacred atmosphere. Light symbolizes God's presence through beams, movement, and contrasts, with dynamic lighting in Saint Benedict Chapel and dark shelter quality in Bruder Klaus Chapel. Materials are chosen for their sensory impact and aging process. Saint Benedict Chapel features warm wood and delicate detailing, while Bruder Klaus Chapel uses charred wood for a unique aroma and texture. The distinct forms of both chapels create a contemplative atmosphere and reinforce their function as places of worship.

Abstract

Abstract: The arrival of the Dutch to Gorontalo instigated the interaction between the Dutch colonial culture and the culture of the local people. One of the modes of cultural interaction is the adaptation of Gorontalo's vernacular architectural forms to the houses where the Dutch lived in urban areas. The adaptation process occurred to meet the demands of everyday life and adapt to climatic conditions and the surrounding environment. The adaptation of Gorontalo's vernacular architectural forms occurs in dwellings located in colonial government areas, where the physical appearance clearly shows a meeting between European/Dutch architectural elements and local Gorontalo architectural elements. The adaptation of Gorontalo's vernacular architectural forms to the Dutch houses in urban areas during the colonial period also determined the further development of the character and identity of the city of Gorontalo. This study aims to identify the various forms of Gorontalo vernacular adaptations carried out by the Dutch in their dwellings and their implications for developing the character and identity of the city of Gorontalo. The research area covers the administrative center area of the assistant resident during the colonial era, now known as the urban center of Gorontalo. The research utilizes a qualitative descriptive method supported by literature and field observation data. The results confirmed that the interaction between the Dutch colonial culture and the culture of the local community has led to the adaptation of Gorontalo's vernacular architectural forms to the houses where the Dutch lived in urban areas and significant changes in the socio-cultural and political aspects of the city of Gorontalo.

Abstract

There are two types of building energy consumption, namely embodied energy and building operational energy. Studies on operational energy have been widely discussed, while studies on building embodied energy are still quite rare to be studied, especially in Indonesia. In fact, the calculation of embodied energy, especially on embodied energy material, is important in the design phase of the building because it can be used as the basis for various determinations of building energy values and carbon emissions generated by buildings due to construction activities. By using the right tools in the embodied energy calculation, the building planner can determine the right embodied energy value so that it can support the building energy mitigation. This paper aims to explain the use of embodied energy building calculation software that have been developed with the aim of providing an overview and supporting research development of embodied energy building in Indonesia.

Abstract

Currently, there is a lack of comprehensive guidelines for child-friendly architecture that serve as a cohesive framework for designing spaces for children. Yet, architecture for children should be given greater priority to ensure adequate educational facilities for the next generation. Creativity is paramount in the development of fine and gross motor skills in children. In the related case study of Fuji Kindergarten, technical requirements related to the physical and motor development of children have been well addressed through the implementation of exceptionally designed spaces. Thus, the aspects implemented by Fuji Kindergarten in its design can serve as exemplary design principles. The method employed revolves around Sarah Scott's theory of architecture for children, which will be mapped onto the design features used by Tezuka Architect as the designer of Fuji Kindergarten. This will be further compared with the Farming Kindergarten in Vietnam, which also receives recognition in the category of children's architecture. This paper aims to raise awareness of the importance of architecture for children, serving as a formulation of concerns that may eventually lead to solutions for the issues in designing architectural spaces for children. Additionally, it serves as a comprehensive insight into designing children's architecture, particularly kindergarten spaces, drawing from the best practices in children's architecture typologies.
