Abstract

This article discusses the tradition of fresh flour which is still practiced by ethnic Malays in North Sumatra in various traditional ceremonies that are considered sacred. In this article the author uses the historical method. The historical method according to Gottschalk (1986) is a process of critically examining and analyzing records of past relics. Imaginative reconstruction of the past based on data obtained by going through that process is called historiography. The results showed that this tradition of plain flour had been practiced and was influenced by beliefs before the arrival of Islam to the North Sumatra region. Fresh flour comes from the word tampung Tawar which means the activity of accepting bidders by being accommodated (to hold hands) as a form of receiving bidders (drugs) and has a magical function. This tradition is also a means of asking God for blessings and privileges, so that all good things are poured out for people who are offered flour and kept away from bad things in their lives. In addition, this tradition is also a symbol of integration between religion and culture, especially in the North Sumatra region.

Abstract

Islamic education in Aceh in the early 20th century was in a phase of significant decline. This setback was caused by various factors such as the repressive attitude of the Dutch government which always monitored all forms of the learning process in the dayah because it was feared that through the dayah there would be more rebels. This has an impact on a rigid learning system and only studies religious issues, western science is considered something that is forbidden to learn. This increasingly complicated situation poses a challenge for reformist-minded ulama who want to reform the face of Islamic education in Aceh. The Organization of the Association of All Aceh Ulama (PUSA) was finally established as an answer to all the anxiety about the decline in education in Aceh. The reform effort carried out by PUSA is to integrate the general education curriculum with the religious education curriculum. The unification of the vision of every school in Aceh to establishing a university to produce modern teachers.

Abstract

The formation of the district of Jember was influenced by Europeans who were interested in establishing a plantation in Jember. Jember which was originally part of the Bondowoso afdeeling then on January 9, 1883 the Governor of the Dutch East Indies made a change to a separate afdeeling and in 1928 the Dutch East Indies government issued a regulation to increase the status to Regentschap Djember as a district. Changes in status caused a large number of migrants to come, especially ethnic Chinese who made their place of residence namely the Chinatown village. The Chinatown area which is located in the city center is not only their place of residence, but their economic activities are also carried out in the area. The objectives to be achieved in this article are: (1) to determine the process of the formation of the Chinatown area in Jember Regency, (2) to determine the influence of the Chinatown area on the spatial planning of the city of Jember, 1930-1970. The method used in this study is a historical research method that contains four points, including: heuristics (data collection), verification (source criticism), interpretation, and historiography.
