Abstract

After the fall of the Abbasid dynasty in 1258 due to the attack of the Mongols, the mecca of great Islamic power began to move to the Ottoman Empire and the Timurid Empire. The two great powers were led by Sultan Bayazid and Timur Lenk, respectively. The development and power possessed by these two rulers brought them to the point where they competed with each other in spreading political influence. Policies to undermine each other's territory are inevitable. They finally met in the great war in 1402 in Ankara. The war was finally won by Timur Lenk's troops and Sultan Bayazid became a prisoner of war. The paper uses historical methods that focus on literature review to find sources and present research answers. This paper aims to describe the causes of political competition and its implications for the Islamic world at that time.

Abstract

This article discusses the diaspora carried out by the Minang people in West Sumatra to the land of Aceh from the perspective of history and socio-cultural life. In its development, the Minang community has acculturated with local culture in Aceh so as to form a new identity known as the aneuk jamee tribe. To answer this research problem, the historical method is used which consists of four steps, namely heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The process of diaspora Minang society has occurred since the 17th century when the Kingdom of Aceh made cultural contact because it became the ruler in the western part of Sumatra. Furthermore, after the outbreak of the Padri war, this diaspora wave increased because many Minang people as victims of this war chose to migrate in search of a better life. In Aceh, the Aneuk Jamee tribal people are scattered by inhabiting residential areas on the west coast of Aceh.

Abstract

Islamic education in Aceh in the early 20th century was in a phase of significant decline. This setback was caused by various factors such as the repressive attitude of the Dutch government which always monitored all forms of the learning process in the dayah because it was feared that through the dayah there would be more rebels. This has an impact on a rigid learning system and only studies religious issues, western science is considered something that is forbidden to learn. This increasingly complicated situation poses a challenge for reformist-minded ulama who want to reform the face of Islamic education in Aceh. The Organization of the Association of All Aceh Ulama (PUSA) was finally established as an answer to all the anxiety about the decline in education in Aceh. The reform effort carried out by PUSA is to integrate the general education curriculum with the religious education curriculum. The unification of the vision of every school in Aceh to establishing a university to produce modern teachers.

Abstract

Afghanistan is a Muslim country with a long history of conflict. Politics in Afghanistan has always been characterized by repeated coups against the ruling leaders. Since 1994, a group of Afghan religious students formed an extremist group called the Taliban. This group even became the sole ruler of the country after the coup against Ashraf Gani in 2021. This paper aims to examine the embryo of the conflict that led to the emergence of the strong Taliban group in Afghanistan. The research method used in this study is a historical method with four steps: heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results show that Afghanistan has never stopped fighting. In the current context, the Taliban has become an authoritarian ruler, and political and security conditions in Afghanistan are far from conducive. Women have been the group most affected by policies that restrict their rights.

Abstract

The All Aceh Ulama Association (PUSA) is where reformist clerics from Aceh gather. PUSA was born based on their concerns about the socio-religious conditions in Aceh, which were trapped in rigid Islamic practices, so there had to be a breakthrough to change the education system in Aceh to make it more advanced. Since the first PUSA congress in 1940, this organization began to serve as a forum for conveying people's aspirations so that PUSA was actively involved in a series of political events in Aceh. The written discussion focuses on the period from 1939, the year of PUSA's formation, until 1962, the end of PUSA's political influence. This research is a social history study, so a socio-political approach is used to analyze the PUSA political movement. Meanwhile, the four method steps in research are heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The research results show that the political action carried out by PUSA aims to fight for Aceh to be free from all forms of colonialism and to implement Islamic Sharia. Some forms of PUSA political movements include holding a congress in Sigli, diplomacy with Japan, carrying out a rebellion against the Dutch, eradicating feudal practices and uleebalang power, and fighting for Aceh's rights in national politics in the DI/TII rebellion.

Abstract

The policy of expanding territory was an imperative aspect of the early days of Islamic rule in Medina. The main reason Islamic leaders sought to expand their territory into regions such as Persia and mainland North Africa was to further the interests of da’wah. History records indicate that Islamic troops succeeded in establishing new settlements, which later became centres of new civilization, in addition to the cities of Mecca and Medina. Notably, these new cities included Kufa and Basrah. This research employs historical methods, specifically a library study approach, to locate historical data. The four methods utilized are heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The research findings show that these four cities were chosen because of their strategic locations as the leading fronts for the mission to conquer territory under the power of Islamic enemies such as Persia. In these cities, Muslims began to build new city plans until they developed into centres for trade, agriculture, and the military. As a result, outsiders began to settle and formed a new social identity in these cities.

Abstract

The tradition of Khatam al-Qur’an has existed since the era of Prophet Muhammad Saw, in which the Prophet highly recommended his followers to seal (khatam) and read the Qur’an by reciting it from the beginning to the end. This article aims to describe deeply the implementation of the Khatam al-Qu’an in groups and individually, as well as the views of the Khatam al-Qu’an. The instruments used are observation, interview, and documentation. The data were analysed using data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The findings show that the tradition of Khatam al-Qur'an is carried out in groups and individually. The Khatam al-Qur'an in the group is only carried out in the holy month of Ramadhan by the village community, either in the mosque or the meunasah. Reciting the Qur’an (tadarus) at the mosque or meunasah during Ramadhan is carried out by men only. They usually complete sealing the Qur'an 1 or 2 times in a Ramadhan month. The implementation of individual Khatam al-Qur'an is carried out on children or teenagers who have completed reading 30 juz of the al-Qur'an. Khatam al-Qur'an done individually does not involve the village community but only his or her friends or other people at the recitation place. The Khatam al-Qur'an is a form of gratitude and glorification of the Qur'an. In addition, it is an embodiment or a sign of victory for an individual or group in studying the reciting of the Qur'an.
