Abstract

Purpose of the study: To find out the application of the Concept Attainment model with the help of fractional card media in increasing understanding of the concept of fractions in class II Ahmad Dahlan Elementary School. Methodology: The research was conducted at Ahmad Dahlan Elementary School in the even semester of 2018/2019. The research sample was 22 students. Research data obtained through student learning outcomes and observation sheets. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Qualitative data were analyzed to determine the learning process using the Concept Attainment learning model based on fractional card media. Main Findings: The results of the study show that the application of the Concept Attainment model assisted by fractional card media can improve understanding of the concept of fractions. By observing the results of understanding the concept of fractions in the first cycle, namely 53.01%, it increased in cycle II to 77.12%. In cycle I the results of the written test evaluation with classical completeness of 63.15% increased in cycle II by 18.66% to 81.81%. Novelty/Originality of this study: The latest research in this research is to combine the concept learning learning model with fraction card media which is generally not widely used, especially for learning fractions in elementary school mathematics, the benefits for students in this action research will then make it easier for them to face more difficult learning levels in the next class and can become a new teaching idea for teachers to facilitate student understanding.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The purpose of this study was to provide psychometric evidence of the Optimism Scale based on Explanatory Style in high school students in Indonesia. Methodology: The type of research is quantitative research with a survey type. This study was conducted with EFA factor analysis, which was used for initial exploration in scale development and CFA, which was used to confirm a predetermined factor model based on the results of EFA., the optimism scale consisted of 32 items, and the number of subjects in this study was 186 students. The data were analysed using the Jamovi program version 2.4.11. Main Findings: The results of this study indicate that there are 3 factors after EFA, and after CFA there are 7 items that are dropped, leaving 25 items with CFA values of CFI = 0.911, TLI = 0.902, SRMR = 0.0553, RMSEA = 0.0508 and McDonald's Omega reliability of 0.872 and Cronbach's alpha of 0.872. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study offers an explanatory style-based optimism scale with comprehensive psychometric validity evidence in Indonesian high school students. This study makes a novel contribution in the development of instruments that are appropriate to the Indonesian cultural context, as well as supporting the measurement of optimism in educational settings to understand students’ positive thinking patterns in order to improve their psychological well-being and academic achievement.

Abstract

Hope is important in mediating the relationship between optimism and grit in adolescents. Optimism, believing in positive future outcomes, can promote constructive attitudes. However, hope helps to direct such optimism into concrete actions in the form of grit in achieving goals. This study examined the effect of optimism on grit, with hope as a mediating among adolescents in Islamic boarding schools. This study used a quantitative, ex-post facto approach involving 367 adolescents selected through multistage random sampling. Data were collected using the Short Grit Scale (Grit-S), Optimism Scale, and Adult Dispositional Hope Scale. Data was analyzed using multiple regression with Process v4.2 macro of Hayes Model 4 through SPSS. The findings showed a significant positive influence between optimism and grit through hope, with complete mediation. Therefore, it is crucial for boarding schools to foster optimism and set realistic goals, as this can improve students' fortitude and academic achievement. The practical implications of these findings are that teachers and Islamic boarding school administrators can teach and promote an optimistic attitude and realistic and positive goal setting, reward small achievements, and goal visualization exercises can help increase adolescent hope and grit.
