Abstract

To support the efforts of the Indonesian government in managing marine debris that has a broad potential negative impact in various aspects, beach debris monitoring activities are urgently required in various locations. This research was carried out from June to August 2018 in the west coast region, on Labuange beach, Barru Regency, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, which was exposed by the Indonesian Through-Flow. The study aimed to determine the amount, weight and composition of marine debris on Labuange beach.  Marine debris was sampled from a permanent line transect with an area of 150 m2 (three replications). Samples were then cleaned, sorted, counted, and weighed. The average amount of marine debris was 5.98 + 2.13 items/m2 per month, with a total weight was 138.69 ± 91.32 g/m2 per month. Plastic and rubber category dominated every sampling period in the location. The abundance of marine debris, both regarding quantity and weight, fluctuated in high amount during the sampling period, which indicated the magnitude of the role of oceanographic factors, including the direction of waves, and lack of community awareness on marine debris impacts and management. The great amount and weight of marine debris and the type of waste, which was dominated by plastic and rubber is a potential threat to humans, marine biota, and the local or global environment.

Abstract

Sandrobone is a villagein Takalar Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesiawith low education and low income, which lead to environmental degradation due to overexploitation of itsnatural resources, such as over-conversion of mangrove forests to fishponds, destructive fishing and unmanaged household waste disposal. Nowadays, the mangroves area are depleting, fishing ground are far away, and biodiversity are degrading in the area. Therefore, weneed to find alternative livelihoods to overcome environmental damage and increase theincome of local communities. One solution is the development of tourism. Sanrobone has a potential of cultural tourism, such as Sanrobone Fortress and Sanrobone Kings Cemetery, which can be promoted and developed in order to improve the welfare of the community because it is supported by nature, community life, and socio-cultural conditions. However, there are still minimal visitors (domestic and foreign tourists) to the area because tourism facilities and infrastructure are very limited to meet the needs of the tourist. To overcome and reduce this problem, the promotion activities was carried out as a first step, including: 1) socialization of the tourism object to Takalar District government and the Sanrobone community; 2) creating a tourist map and setting up a sign board for tourist; 3) making a promotion video fortourism on social media; 4) promotionof the tourism object viaradio and leaflets. This promotional activities aimed to increase the number of tourists visiting Sanrobone village and to increase employment opportunities for the community and to continue preserving the existing community culture so that natural resources can be managed sustainably.

Abstract

Labakkang Beach, Pangkajene Islands Regency has the characteristics of gently sloping coastal waters covered with various mangrove and seagrass communities. In general, seagrass is more commonly found in intertidal than subtidal areas, this is due to the depth reason. However, based on first observations, seagrass in Labakkang coastal waters thrives in subtidal areas and is less fertile in intertidal areas. The purpose of this study was to decide the differences in species, cover, and density of seagrass in intertidal and subtidal areas in the waters of Labakkang Beach, Pangkajene Islands Regency. This research was conducted in July 2021 with the method used, namely purposive sampling. Measurements of environmental parameters at the sampling location were carried out directly (in situ) including temperature, salinity, tides, depth, and current velocity, while turbidity, Total Organic Matter (TOM) analysis, and grain size of sediment were carried out tegakanirectly (ex-situ). The results of the average measurements of temperature, salinity, current velocity, depth, turbidity and TOM respectively show the range of 300C - 310C; 33.3‰ – 35.0‰; 0.07 m/s - 0.18 m/s (at high tide); 0.31 m - 1.32 m; 11.06 NTU - 29.04 NTU and 2.49 % - 5.39 %. The results of sediment analysis using Software Gradistat are 2 types of sediment, namely medium sand & fine sand and 2 types of sediment texture, namely Slightly Gravelly Sand and Slightly Gravelly Muddy Sand. The average percentage of seagrass cover at the intertidal station was 23.33 % while at the subtidal station it was 61.11% and only 2 species of seagrass were found, namely Enhalus acoroides and Halophila ovalis. The average density of seagrass at the intertidal station is 48.88 ind/m2 while at the subtidal station it is 86 ind/m2. The results of the Independent T-test analysis showed that there were significant differences in the cover and density of seagrass in the intertidal zone and subtidal zone in the coastal waters of Labakkang.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to characterize benthic substrate of Bonetambung reef area using worldview 2 highresolution satellite imagery. About 14.273 depth spot were deploy to build bathimetric model of the study area. The correlation of pixel radiance value from satellite imagery and depth value from field measurement werebecame the basis to classify geomorphologic zone of shallow water area up to 7 meter depth. Between threeinterpolator tested, the natural neighbor interpolator has produced the best bathymetric model with root meansquare error 0.3 meter and benthic substrate coverage model with thematic accuracy 62%. These approach beable to recognize four substrate type in general, such as sand, seagrass, rubble and coral. Geomorphicsegmentation based on bathymetric profile and radiance value of worldview 2 imagery may also maps the reefflat, reef slope and lagoon area hence may support the benthic substrate modeling. This study showed us apotential technic to develop a modelling for juvenile fish transport at Bonetambung coral waters.Key words: benthic substrate bathymetry, worldview imagery, thematic accuracy

Abstract

Sandeq is a kind of marine transportation , since long has been operated by Mandar seaman and fishers alongthe coastal water area, as well as for fishing in Sulawesi Barat . This research was carried out to study thefeasibility of utilizing the Sandeq boat in marine ecotourism in Pasir Putih Island of the Polewali MandarRegency. SWOT Analisys has been applied to reveal the level of support of stakeholders regarding this idea, andthe strategies to be carried out in developing this specific ecotourism. The analysis shows that the internal andexternal factors are strongly support the program with a strong and aggressive manner and having a positifopportunity. A scenario on commercially operated ecotourism was designed and financially analyzed for 5 yearsperiod of operation: (1) Net present value of Rp 705.121.922,-, (2) Internal rate of returnof 100,99 %, and B/Cratio range from 1.7 at 3nd year to 3.7 at the 5th year. Those values showed that the project is financiallyfeasible. Abstract

In 2011, the government of West Sulawesi has planned on sea conservation area covering the islands in Mandar Bay of PolewaliMandar Regency. One of the islands that has been declared as sea conservation area is the Pasir Putih Island. In order todevelop maritime echotourism in the Pasir Putih Island than a research has been carry out starting in July to December 2015.The purposes of this research are: (1) to evaluate the suitability of coral and the species association for diving activity, (2) toevaluate suitability of the area for snorkeling, (3) to estimate the carrying capacity of the area for echotourism activity. Theresult of this research indicates that the coral area for the diving activity in Pasir Putih Island is categorized as on conditionalof appropriate. The carrying capacity of the area was estimated to 45 person per day for diving activity, while for snorkelingtour the area is quite appropriate for 90 person per day. To support marine ecotourism development, the following strategies areneeded: (1). Establishing cooperation with local government in maintaining the local wisdom. (2) Estabilishing core zone asRegional Marine Conservation Area (KKLD), (3). Abstract

Ecotourism is a nature-based tourism activity that includes aspects of education and interpretation of the natural environment and community culture with ecological sustainability management. This study aims to determine the bioecological aspects of mangrove ecosystem as an object of ecotourism and to know the geophysical aspects of Gonda Beach as a supporter of mangrove ecotourism suitability on Gonda Beach. This research was conducted in November 2016 in Laliko Village, Campalagian Sub-district, Polewali Mandar Regency, including mangrove bioecological data collection including thickness, density, species and biota associated with mangrove and coastal geophysical data collection covering wide coastal measurement, coastal slope, depth, tidal, current, wave and substrate of waters. Result of research show potential of mangrove ecosystem to become ecotourism area with good condition of mangrove vegetation. The mangrove species in the ecosystem of the gonda mangroves are Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Rhizophora stylosa, Rhizophora apiculata, Ceriops tagal, Sonneratia alba, Avicennia alba, Avicennia marina, Xylocarpus granatum and Xylocarpus moluccensis, and diverse biota such as fish, reptiles, birds and crabs as a tourist attraction . Gonda mangrove ecosystem area is a very suitable area to become a mangrove ecotourism area.Keywords: ecotourism, mangrove, conformity analysis, tourism object

Abstract

Characteristics and distribution of bottom sediment is one of the important parameters in determining the management plan and land use in coastal areas. The purpose of this study was to determine the condition of the distribution of bottom sediments and to compare the changes that occurred in the distribution of bottom sediment before and after the reclamation of the Center Point of Indonesia (CPI) in Makassar City. Sediment sampling was carried out using a grab sampler at four stations, namely stastions on the island adjacent to the reclamation area and two other stations in the water around the reclamation area. The results showed that the bottom sediment in the waters around the reclamation area consisted of coarse sand and medium sand with an organic matter content of 14.92% in the sediment. On the islands adjacent to the reclamation area, the bottom sediments are move varied, consisting of coarse sand, medium sand and fine sand with lower organic matter content of 4.92% to 5.38%.
