Abstract

The development of diplomatic relations between countries raises a new concept, namely gastrodiplomacy. This change was also adopted by the South Korean government, who used gastrodiplomation as one of the elements of Korean Wave through the Samyang Challenge trend. This study aims to see how the influence of the Samyang Challenge on the diplomacy process carried out by South Korea in Indonesia 2015 to 2017. Using the qualitative method and data reduction analysis, this study shows that this trend is sufficient to have a significant influence on South Korean diplomacy processes in Indonesia, although there are still further challenges, especially regarding product halal issues.

Abstract

This study analyzes the environmental impact and benefit distribution of Chinese nickel smelter investments in Southeast Sulawesi, focusing on Indonesia's commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 15 which concerns the preservation of terrestrial ecosystems. Using a mixed methods approach, this research combines quantitative and qualitative analyses to evaluate how extractive activities, such as nickel mining affect environmental sustainability and the well-being of local communities. The findings show that the increase in nickel production and exports to China has accelerated deforestation and land degradation and leading to a 17% reduction in forested areas in 2020 which negatively impacts environment. From the perspective of Green Theory, these investments tend to have a greater negative impact on the environment than the long-term economic benefits received by the country. Although these investments contribute to economic growth but the environmental burden borne by local communities and ecosystems is much greater, creating a serious dilemma for Indonesia's commitment to sustainable development. Abstract

This research examines the complex relationship between sports and international politics through the case study of sanctions imposed on Chelsea FC in the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. This study aims to analyze how international conflicts can affect individual entities, particularly in terms of football club ownership. Utilizing the theory of complex interdependence as proposed by Keohane and Nye, this study employs a qualitative methodology with an explanatory case study approach, analyzing official documents from the UK government, Chelsea FC’s documentation, and international media coverage. The findings indicate that the application of smart sanctions against Chelsea FC through its owner, Roman Abramovich, reflects a significant evolution in the use of foreign policy instruments. Three main dimensions of British interest are identified: economic, aimed at disrupting the financial flows of Russian oligarchs; political, to strengthen the United Kingdom’s position in the post-Brexit landscape; and sociocultural, leveraging the Premier League as a form of soft power. This research contributes to demonstrating how modern sports have transformed into an integral part of the complex web of international relations.

Abstract

This study examines the complex dilemma faced by Indonesia in managing refugees, particularly the tension between humanitarian diplomacy objectives and domestic political imperatives. Despite not being a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention and the 1967 Protocol, Indonesia has become a significant transit country for refugees, with approximately 12,000 displaced persons currently seeking protection within its borders. Employing a qualitative approach and thematic analysis through the theoretical lens of humanitarian diplomacy, this research identifies key political factors influencing refugee management policies in Indonesia. The findings reveal that security concerns, economic considerations, public sentiment, and interest group dynamics significantly shape Indonesia's approach to refugee management. The study demonstrates how Indonesia's humanitarian diplomacy is frequently constrained by competing domestic political discourses and contested protection practices. The research contributes to the literature by analyzing local diplomatic approaches developed by regional governments to navigate these tensions. The study concludes that addressing this dilemma requires systemic transformation through stronger political commitment and a holistic, sustainable approach that harmonizes regulations with international protection standards while acknowledging legitimate domestic concerns.
