Abstract

Salah satu kemampuan berbahasa yang paling mendasar adalah kemampuan membaca. Kemampuan membaca terutama membaca teks berbahasa asing merupakan kemampuan dasar yang penting dimiliki oleh seorang pengajar bahasa asing agar dapat menyampaikan materi pembelajaran kepada peserta didiknya. Speed reading atau membaca cepat merupakan salah satu kemampuan membaca yang penting dimiliki karena dapat menunjang proses pemahaman suatu materi dengan waktu yang efektif dan efisien. Kemampuan membaca cepat memerlukan latihan karena kemampuan ini merupakan kemampuan tambahan yang perlu dilatih agar dapat memperoleh manfaat dari penerapannya. Mengingat pentingnya kemampuan membaca cepat diterapkan pada para pengajar bahasa asing, tim Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung merasa perlu untuk memberikan pelatihan kepada para pengajar Bahasa Inggris dengan judul “Pelatihan Speed Reading bagi Guru-Guru SD Mata Pelajaran Bahasa Inggris Se-Kecamatan Tarogong, Kabupaten Garut”. Sasaran kegiatan ini adalah guru-guru Bahasa Inggris SD yang berada di wilayah Tarogong Kaler dan arogong Kidul Kabupaten Garut. Guru Bahasa Inggris SD dijadikan sasaran awal program PkM ini karena di wilayah kecamatan Tarogong Kaler dan Kidul ini mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris telah diberikan di tingkat Sekolah Dasar.

Abstract

This research presents the responds of the hearers as the effects of directive speech acts that are given by the characters in Jack the Giant Slyer (2013) movie. The research is aimed to analyze the categories of responds resulted from the addresses when they are asked to do something by using the theory about directive speech act by Leech (1983). The result of the analysis shows that the responds of the characters that are found in some categories are in the form of action responds, verbal responds, action and verbal responds and no responds. The most type of directive speech acts that is responded by the action is commanding, and the least of it is suggesting.

Abstract

Translation has contributed a huge effect to everyday life since its existence. The translation is a very complex language activity that requires the translator to have knowledge on language and grammar, at the same time culture, social, religion, and material. The purpose of this study is to assess the translation accuracy of English complex sentences into Indonesia in a novel entitled “Juliet” written by Anne Fortier using the theory of Nababan’s translation accuracy assessment. The novel is the most dominant literary work to read. Nowadays, there are a lot of novels have been translated into various languages. It contains various sentence structures, and the structure should be translated well. The complex sentence has a complex and challenging structure. The method used in this study is qualitative. 52 data are collected and ranged from 1 to 3, depending on their accuracies. The higher the score shows, the more accurate translation; and the lower the score, the less accurate translation. The result showed that the translations are accurate, with a score of 2,7.

Abstract

Penerjemahan esensinya tidak hanya menerjemahkan SL kedalam TL, tetapi juga menemukan ketepatan makna ketika SL diterjemahkan kedalam TL. Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Indonesia itu sendiri merupakan dua bahasa dengan struktur gramatikal dan aturan yang berbeda, khususnya perbedaan dalam proses penyusunan kata, frase, dan klausa menjadi kalimat yang baik dan benar. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bagaimana perubahan struktur serta pergeseran makna frasa nomina (NP) Bahasa Inggris ketika diterjemahkan kedalam Bahasa Indonesia yang ditemukan dalam novel The Adventure of Tom Sawyer dan terjemahan versi Bahasa Indonesianya. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif, purposive sampling atau sample acak serta dokumen analisis dengan menerapkan analisa tri diagram. Dengan menggunakan teori translation shif dan sintaksis, penelitian ini menunjukkan adanya perubahan pola, perubahan kategori sintaksis, perubahan fungsi sintak dan pergeseran makna ketika NP Bahasa Inggris di terjemahkan kedalam Bahasa Indonesia.

Abstract

Hyperbole is an exaggerate expression which is often used in literary works such as poem, novel and song lyric. This research will analyze how the hyperbolic expressions are shown in One Direction’s love song lyrics by using Claridge’s theory of hyperbole. The objects taken for this research are from love song lyrics of One Direction which are taken from 3 albums. The finding shows that from the analyzed data, the hyperbolic expressions are shown from their gradability and intensification, context, and problem of literal meaning.

Abstract

Reporting as a feature of a news genre has been an interesting research for many language researchers currently. As the use of the media in reporting other people’s ideas becomes more vary, the focus of the research is widely developed. One of the interesting reporting devices to analyze is the reporting verbs which have the main function of reporting other’s statements. This article will analyze the semantic categories of these verbs used in news articles published in 4 online news media. The theories from Biber, et al. (2002) equipped by Quirk (1985) are applied to analyze this problem. The findings show that there are three semantic categories found in the reporting verbs used in online news article. Those are classified into communication, activity, and mental verbs.

Abstract

Translation is not only translating SL into TL, but also looking for the equivalent meaning when SL is translated into TL. English and Indonesian are two languages where both of them have different grammatical pattern in arranging how word, phrase, and clause as units of syntax are formed into a good sentence. This research shows how the structure and the changing meaning of NP in English and Indonesian found in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’s novel and its Indonesian translation. The method of research is using qualitative method, purposive sampling, and document analysis which uses tri diagram. Using the theory of translation shift and syntax, this research shows that there are the changing of syntactic pattern, the changing of syntactic category and the changing of syntactic function also the shift of meaning when English NP is translated into Indonesian.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the language features used by male and female in social media, especially Instagram and Twitter. The data used in this study are based on ten characteristics of women's language features which presented by Robin Lakoff in her book entitled Language and Women's Place. This study also uses an additional theory about the characteristics of men’s language which is presented by Jennifer Coates as a supporter of the main theory. The data collected comes from Instagram and Twitter posts containing hashtag #SaveJohnnyDepp. The results showed that male and female users use the same language characteristics, but the frequency is slightly different. The difference lies in the focus of the topics discussed and the use of language features proposed by Lakoff and Coates. This study also found that the purpose of using #SaveJohnnyDepp on Instagram and Twitter both male and female users is to provide support and ask for the justice that Johnny Depp deserves.

Abstract

Integrated language skills that applied with ITC-based learning is very important to teach as it helps students to be familiar to communicate English in the real situations. Meanwhile learning videos are part of ITC that are highly effective and efficient to help students to understand learning materials as well. The new normal era after the pandemic seems engaging both teachers and students to use learning videos in blended learning class which consists of varied learning interactions. The blended learning gives both teachers and students more opportunities to apply advanced technologies, so they get ready in facing society 5.0 era. This research is a case study of mixed method design. It aims to find out qualitatively and quantitatively to what extent the use of teachers’ learning videos in blended learning empower students’ integrated language skills. By doing questionnaires, interviews and having observation on 32 participants-the 2 teachers and 30 students of MTs. Negeri 6 Cianjur at the eighth grade, the data were collected and analyzed. The findings revealed that positive respond to the use of teachers' learning videos in MTs. N 6 Cianjur reached 81%, the use of blended learning class was 80% and students' integrated learning skills empowerments was 79%. These values are then averaged to 80%. Thus quantitatively the extent of students' integrated language skills empowerment through the use of teachers' learning videos in blended learning class is feasible. While the results of qualitative data analysis obtained from semi-structured interviews show that the data obtained can expand and deepen the quantitative data.Keywords: blended learning; integrated language skills; learning videos; students’ empowerment.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the representation of social injustice in the film script of The Greatest Showman on Earth. The film, released in 2017, is a musical drama that tells the story of P.T. Barnum, a visionary who creates the Barnum & Bailey Circus and becomes one of the most famous showmen in the world. However, the film has received criticism for its depiction of social injustice, particularly in its representation of marginalized communities such as people of color and individuals with disabilities.The research will employ a qualitative analysis of the film script, focusing on the themes, characters, and storylines that address social injustice. The script will be analyzed for its accuracy in depicting the representation of social injustice principles.
