Abstract

In March 2020 and the global outbreak of the coronavirus prompted the government to adjust its policies including the closure of educational institutions and swiftly shift to online learning. The aim of the research study was to describe the experiences of three English-language lecturers who taught listening during the Covid-19 Pandemic. It examines the challenges faced, including the shift to distance education, the preparation of teaching materials, and the navigation of unexpected obstacles. This research used collaborative auto-ethnography (CAE) as a qualitative study. This method involves the collaboration between the first, second, and third authors to gain understanding and insight into their shared experience. The data collection process was conducted in early 2021. After we taught extensive listening in the 3rd semester of the academic year 2020-2021. For collecting the data we used the story of our experience in a narrative inquiry, photo voice, and semi-structured interview that was analyzed using a thematic analysis. The fings of this study, from the experiences of the three authors as lecturers indicate that the epidemic situation is not a barrier to contributing positively to the world of education. One of the positive effects is that it can increase the creativity of teachers or lecturers in developing teaching materials and using TPACK and also help students evaluate concepts and theories more critically. This study also reveals that, despite experiencing problems such as unstable internet signals in their respective areas, teachers and lecturers are able to adapt to both academic and non-academic environments.

Abstract

Language in every reagon has some diversities. It turns into dialect for every culture which consumes the national language. In south sulawesi, the people use Indonesia with a special dialect as a characteristic of  the people there. The national language, Indonesia, use as common as other region but there are specific differences in its affix in South Sulawesi. In Morphology, Affix is a part of word which has a special meaning. It is a kind of bound morphem. In makassarese there are several suffixes which have some meaning. The objective of this research is to describe the meaning of each suffix in terms of sequence of its grammatical function. Then too see how the affixes work in sentence pattern of Indonesia-Makasarese dialect. The method used in this research is descriptive- qualitative. The analysis used is Morphosyntaxis. It is focused on explaining the grammatical function in the use of Indonesian-Makassarese dialect. The analysis shows that, the writer explained a lot of about basic sentence pattern from Indonesian Language with Makassarese dialect, from which the writer get similarities on the element of the sentence formation, such as : subject (S), predicate (P or V), and object (O) in a sentence. The sentence pattern S+ V in English is similar to Indonesian-Makassarese dialect sentence pattern; But Indonesian-Makassarese dialect have special affixes which have special class as KB or noun, (KS) or adjective, ( KK) or verb and (Kata ganti orang) or Personal pronoun. Indonesia and Indonesia-makassarese dialect have some similarities in structure of type such as S+P or S+V and S+P+O or S+V+O. Furthermore, the difference between the basic sentence in Indonesia and Indonesia-Makassarese dialect are the element sentence formations. In Indonesia-Makassarese dialect sentence pattern are S+V+O, this patterns flexible. It can change into V+S+O, V+O+S and V+S without changing its meaning. While in Indonesia, sentence pattern is a permanent, it does not change pattern.

Abstract

Political debate is always used by politician in order to convince the hearer in winning their election. This research aim is to acknowledge the reader about how politician used his language in Political Debate. Many politicians use religious symbols in in performing themselves. Islam, the most majority religion in Indonesia, is always appeared in political debate through appearance or even untterance. This study can give the clearly explanation about Functional semiotic analysis related to language analysis. The theory of Functional analysis can be used in finding the voices of speaker in using their languages. The analysis focused on various features of Islamic symbols in politicians’ utterances and appearances related to the cultural performance. The additional theory about Bakhtinian dialogism was used in order to find the features which are related and different among the debaters. The result showed the features of islamic performance used by each speakers in political debate. The Islamic cues were not only found in non- verbal signs but also existed in verbal utterances.

Abstract

This research entitled "Indirect Refusal Strategies in The Film "The Blind Side" is a study of indirect refusal in one of drama films. In this research, the researcher chose indirect refusal in her studies due to knowing how people make indirect refusal and the strategies that they use in order to avoid the conflict and not to hurt someone else feeling.The research aims to find out the indirect refusal in the dialogues, in order to understand the better way of people convey their strategy to refuse something with indirect refusal strategies. The second goal is the researcher wants to know about the types of indirect refusal strategies that are used by the main characters in the conversation. In collecting the data, the researcher used two stages in her instrument; the first stage is note taking and the second stage is checking list.            In doing the analysis, the researcher found the answers of these research problems about indirect refusal strategies and the type of indirect refusal strategies in the film “The Blind Side.  The researcher found there are 12 conversations using indirect refusal strategies in the film “The Blind Side”. The researcher also found there are three types of indirect refusal strategies which used in the film “The Blind Side”. The indirect refusal strategies that used in the film “The Blind Side” are the expression of a positive opinion, the expression of regret and the expression of reason.

Abstract

Many people speak and switch or mix their general use of language with their mother tongues, especially in communicating with people who understand the different languages. In English Language Teaching classrooms, code switching comes into use either in the teachers’ or the students’ discourse. Generally our students whose formal learning in Indonesia, their first language is Indonesian and learning second language just in the class. And when talking each other in the class, in English learning they often resort to a swithched and mixed code (Indonesia-English). The use of the elements of English is sometimes unconscious. It is also same with the teacher. Teacher sometimes conciously and unconciously make a switching and mixing the languages in providing knowledges.Code-switching and code-mixing are well-known traits in the speech pattern of the average bilingual in any human society the world over, where both of them are the most obvious and widespread which used at different language. Through observing the use of code switching and code mizing in teaching-learning process in Indonesia, the reader can understand the functions, types, and reasons in using the swithing and mixing the languages.

Abstract

Conversation is  the ideal form of communication. Conversation is a kind of spoken discourse that shows spontaneous communication and full of disfluencies. The disfluencies focuses on fillers, vernacular style and careful style. The aim is to find out the kinds of fillers, vernacular style and careful style used in conversation between student and language center staff in UIN Raden Intan Lampung. The analysis used descriptive qualitative by looking at the previous literature. The result shows that there are 10 fillers used by the speakers, 12 vernacular style, and 4 kinds of careful style. Those things have several functions in each utterance. Most of them to show speaker’s feeling, to make statement less harsh, to include the listener to the conversation, to make the simple statement, to reduce faults in making the statement and also to make the utterance more polite.

Abstract

Phonological interference is a common types of interference, its most prominent manifestation being a ‘foreign accent’. Phonological interference happens when the speaker pronounces the English words, then the word are interfered with other sounds of native language. Madurese as a native language in Madura Island have unique characteristics. Based on the interview result of the teacher, at the eleventh students when pronouncing English, there were some differences from English Standard. The pronouncing of English in those words have been influenced by the sounds of phonemes in Madurese. The aim of this research is to find out the types of students’ phonological interferences, the percentages of phonological interference of madurese students in SMA Al Hikam Bangkalan East Java. It is only focused on phonological aspects or accent. The method of the research is used descriptive-qualitative. The result shows that there are 5 types of students phonological interference and the total of students’ phonological interference is 52,93 % represent 699 phonolohical interference. The highest phonological interference frequency made by the students is sound replacements.Keywords: Phonological Interference, Madurese students’, Accent, Pronunciation

Abstract

This thesis was about the students’ ability in using prefix and suffix. The purpose of this research was to know how far is the students’ abilities in using prefix and suffix. This research was conducted at the first semester of twelfth grade of SMK BLK Bandar Lampung in 2018/2019 academic year. The type of this research was descriptive quantitative research. The subject of this research was 205 students of twelfth grade in 8 classes. The data of this research was obtained by using test. The researcher analyzed the data by giving score the students’ test, determining the students’ ability classification, and calculating the frequency’s percentage and the average of students’ score, so the students’ ability in using prefix and suffix could be known. Based on the result of the research, the percentage of students’ ability in using prefix and suffix of excellent level students’ score was 3.90% or 8 students, good level students’ score was 17.56% or 36 students, fair level students’ score was 13.17% or 27 students, low level students’ score was 11.22% or 23 students, and failed students’ score was 54.15% or 111 students. The majority of correct prefix was inter- by 172 items, and the majority of correct suffixes were -ment and -ion by 139 items. Moreover, the majority of correct part of speech used in test was verb. In conclusion, the average of students’ ability in using prefix and suffix at the first semester of twelfth grade of SMK BLK Bandar Lampung in 2018/2019 academic year was 46.67. So, it was categorized into low level

Abstract

The most iconic study of pragmatics is speech acts, it is understood as the actions which are expressed by utterances. The objective of this research is to identify kinds of speech acts and also speech function (based on Searle category) in the English translation of the Holy Qur'an Surah Al-Kahfi by Abdullah Ali. This research used a qualitative approach. The population consisted of 110 interpretation texts of Surah Al-Kahfi, with nine samples taken as the data of the research chosen by using a purposive sampling technique. There are some steps in analyzing the data. They are: (i) Reading the entire English Interpretation of the Holy Qur'an Surah Al-Kahfi by Abdullah Yusuf Ali, (ii) Identifying the data in situation context, kinds of speech acts, and also speech function based on Searle category, (iii) Concluding the data which have been collected. The result of the research has some points. They are: (i) There are 9 verses which have kinds of speech acts phenomena, it involves locutionary, illocutionary, perlocutionary (ii) Those illocutionary acts involve assertive (stating, boasting), directive (recommending, requesting, advising, commanding). It is possibly engaging another issue on the meaning of translation in the pragmatics view (such as deixis, entailment, reference, implicature, presupposition) or another subject (Surah).
