The difference between these cycles was on topic of material used. Each cycle consisted of teaching and learning process and a test. The questionnaire was meant to answer the problems of the study. The analysis of the data showed that there was a significant difference of the students’ achievement in each cycle. The students’ achievement in the cycle II (79 %) was higher than that of cycle I (60,5 %). The relative frequency showed that the mastery level of present continuous tense in the second cycle is better than that on the first cycle. The main factor affecting this improvement was the students’ interest in teaching learning process through Total Physical Response. Based on this data, the writer concluded that teaching present continuous tense through TPR is very beneficial for the students in order to facilitate them in learning present continuous tense. It is suggested that TPR in teaching present continuous tense is recommended for the English teacher.

Abstract

Task-Based Learning (TBL) has emerged as an innovative methodology in English language instruction, emphasizing significant communication, practical application, and learner-focused activities. This research examines the practical obstacles to implementing TBL in educational settings, including task design, classroom management, resource constraints, assessment hurdles, teacher readiness, and cultural resistance. Approaches to tackle these difficulties encompass scaffolding approaches, differentiated instruction, teacher professional development, and innovative utilization of available resources. A comparison between TBL and conventional language training methodologies underscores their unique benefits: TBL promotes fluency, engagement, and autonomy, whereas traditional techniques prioritize grammatical precision and regimented learning. The analysis supports a hybrid strategy that integrates the communicative advantages of TBL with the fundamental benefits of older methods to establish a comprehensive language learning framework. Despite its difficulties, TBL possesses transformative potential in augmenting learner motivation, confidence, and practical language abilities, rendering it a significant enhancement to English language instruction. This study suggests that, with careful implementation and stakeholder support, TBL may transform language instruction and equip learners for effective communication in varied circumstances.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of learning motivation, lecturer support, and learning environment on English language proficiency for maritime work, with the English for Maritime textbook serving as a mediating variable among students at the Maritime Academy of Banyuwangi. Employing a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional survey design, data were collected from 178 respondents selected through proportionate stratified random sampling. The research instrument used a five-point Likert scale questionnaire, and the data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS. The outer model evaluation confirmed convergent and discriminant validity, with all factor loadings above 0.70, Cronbach’s Alpha and Composite Reliability exceeding 0.70, and AVE values above 0.50. The inner model evaluation revealed R-square values of 0.45 for the English for Maritime textbook and 0.62 for English proficiency, indicating moderate to substantial explanatory power. Hypothesis testing through bootstrapping demonstrated that learning motivation, lecturer support, and learning environment significantly influenced English proficiency, both directly and indirectly, through the mediating role of the textbook. Among the predictors, motivation showed the strongest direct effect, while the textbook demonstrated a significant mediating contribution. These findings highlight the importance of integrating motivational strategies, lecturer engagement, and supportive environments with context-specific instructional materials to enhance English language competence for international maritime communication.
