Abstract

This article is meant to explore 1) the typical styles of English spoken by hotel front office candidates, 2) the errors, 3) the awareness about the importance of English mastered by hotel front office candidates. This is important because they become elements of English skills which are dominant to characterize the candidates’ readiness in the hospitality industry. An elicitation technique was applied to gather the data of the typical styles of English, and a questionnaire was also delivered to the respondents - students of hotel studies of Vocational Faculty - Unisbank, to elaborate information about their awareness of English used in hospitality industry. The findings indicate that the candidates mostly used declaratives and interrogatives, for them to give information, demand information and give service. The pragmatic styles used were to engage for information, offer assistance, seek information, and give directions. Mostly, candidates used neutral expressions with no imposition on the politeness strategy, However, some used politeness markers, and others used indirect expressions. Fifty out of 390 utterances were suspected to be ungrammatical, especially in concord. Fortunately, candidates believed that English is still important to help them improve their communication skill in their future job in hospitality industries

Abstract

Pandemi Covid-19 selama lebih dari dua tahun itu telah mengubah perilaku di hampir semua lini kehidupan, tak terkecuali dunia pendidikan. Pemerintah sigap dengan pemberlakukan New Normal dalam arti pembudayaan kepatuhan terhadap protocol kesehatan. Dunia pendidikan siap dengan layanan daring di seluruh jenjang pendidikan dengan berbagai plus-minus terkait dengan infrastruktur dan digital literacy. Program pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk menumbuh kembangkan motivasi belajar bahasa Inggris di jenjang pendidikan anak usia dini (TK). Peserta didik dalam program pengabdian ini berjumlah 27 (dua puluh tujuh) orang yang sedang dalam masa Golden Age. Pengabdian dilaksanakan di TK Bhakti-2 Semarang, salah satu PAUD yang berlokasi di di Jalan Sidoluhur Raya no 13, Telogosari, Semarang. Adapun kegiatan pengabdian tersebut berupa pengenalan kosa kata (Common Nouns dan Occupations), yang sesuai dengan kajian awal, merupakan usaha jitu untuk menumbuhkembangkan motivasi belajar bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing. Kegiatan dilaksanakan melalui penerapan metode pembelajaran dengan teknik belajar sambil bermain. Hal ini sesuai dengan dunia anak. Hasil kegiatan pengabdian menunjukkan adanya respon positif dari peserta didik dan guru kelas dengan tumbuhnya motivasi belajar bahasa Inggris, yang semula dianggap menjadi momok dan sulit. Pada akhirnya mereka berkomitmen untuk lebih mengembangkan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris secara lebih professional melalui konsultasi dengan pihak tim pengabdian di masa mendatang. Covid-19 Pandemic has jeopardized almost all aspects of life, including the world of education. The government’s policy referred to as New Normal has been enacted to force people to comply with health protocol. Educational institutions have provided online modes of learning with both advantages and disadvantages therein, related to infrastructure and digital literacy. This community service program aimed at igniting motivation to learn English within the early educational scheme with total number of 27 students at their Golden Age. The activities were performed at Bhakti Kindergarten-2 located at Jalan Sidoluhur Raya 13, Telogosari, Semarang. The activities included introducing everyday nouns and occupations, which, according to the initial survey, belong to attempts to develop motivation to learn English. Singing songs, games, role-playing, and PowerPoint displays presented with various techniques relevant to children’s world were among dominant activities. The results of this community service program show positive responses among students and the class teacher with the presence of growing motivation to learn English—it, in the past, was considered difficult and frightening. Finally, they are committed to developing English learning more professionally through constant consultation with the team of community services in the future.
