Abstract

Face threatening acts (FTAs) are sometimes unavoidable in communication. Thus, politeness strategies to soften the FTAs are needed to mitigate the risk of face loss. This study was aimed to investigate FTAs, politeness strategies and factors that influenced the choice of politeness strategies in prospective students’ personal statements to apply for a master’s program abroad. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. In collecting the data, the writer used documentary method to gather 11 personal statements from prospective master students. The data were analyzed based on politeness theory proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987). The results showed that all eleven successful personal statements contained both face threatening acts and politeness strategies. The total face threatening acts found were 147 including the acts that threatened both the positive and negative face. Among all FTAs, boasting became the highest occurrence. From four strategies in doing FTAs, only positive politeness and negative politeness were used. The highest occurrence of positive politeness was being optimistic, and using hedge for negative politeness strategy. Power, distance, rank of imposition, type of FTA and gender became the factors that influenced the choice of politeness strategies.

Abstract

The study of translation has been widely discussed and used as a research topic in the last decade, and this research contributes to that body of work. The focus of this study is on two detective novels, "The Silkworm" and "The Cuckoo's Calling.". The research focuses on utterances in the form of stating, mentioning, which are referred to as assertive utterances to express impoliteness. Building on Searle’s expansion of Austin's speech act theory, which categorizes speech acts into assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative, this study analyzes assertive speech acts in both English and their translations, using Jonathan Culpeper's Impoliteness Theory. Data were collected by purposive sampling method and analyzed by content analysis. A focus group discussion (FGD) involving translation experts, raters, and supervisors with extensive experience in translation was conducted to identify translation techniques based on Molina & Albir's framework and to evaluate the translation quality of assertive speech acts representing impoliteness, using the assessment model proposed by Nababan et al. Descriptive-qualitative method was used to explain the research data and describe the analysis. The data found that the translation technique could have a significant effect on the quality of the translation.

Abstract

Abstract

Sekolah Alam Indonesia Cibinong faces challenges in managing academic data, which is currently handled manually, leading to inefficiencies and the risk of data loss. In the digital era, the development of a database-based academic information system has become an urgent need to improve efficiency, security, and accessibility of academic data. This activity aims to develop a structured, modern, and database-driven academic information system to support school operations. The methods used include needs analysis through interviews and surveys, system design using an Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD), web-based database implementation, and user training. The development process has included implementation, training, and user evaluation (User Acceptance Testing), with the evaluation results indicating that the system is well-received by key users. These findings demonstrate that the system has been successfully implemented as planned, contributing significantly to improving the efficiency of academic data management. This development is expected to serve as a model for other educational institutions facing similar challenges. Moving forward, feature enhancements and sustainability monitoring are required to ensure optimal benefits of the system.
