Abstract

Students’ anxiety, speaking performance and their relation to genders have been investigated extensively in the EFL context and most participants are English students, but most of the studies with the same variables were conducted in an offline setting. Thus, the purpose of this research is to describe the anxiety levels of students who studied another language than English in learning English and to investigate the relationship between their anxiety and performance in English-speaking classes. By employing a quantitative approach, 32 male and 66 female Sundanese Language and Culture Study Program students whose anxiety levels were assessed using Horwitz et al.’s (1986) Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) participated voluntarily in the research. Because the data were normally distributed and homogenous, the obtained data were analyzed using parametric statistical tools; independent t-test and Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The results imply that the majority of the participants’ anxiety levels were moderate, and there was no statistical difference in students’ anxiety levels between male and female students. Further exploration of the relationship between the anxiety levels of the students and their speaking performance was weak and negative (r = -0.12, p .68). Thus, the online and offline foreign language classroom settings do not seem to differentiate students’ anxiety levels for both male and female students.

Abstract

This study examines the link between an English instructional time decrease on English learning achievements by reviewing the students’ trends of English learning achievement scores from 2011 to 2017 and conducting a survey concerning the decline in their instructional time. A mixed-method approach was used to meet the objective of the research. For quantitative data, the Likert-scale questionnaire was collected from 474 senior high school English teachers all over Indonesia, and the achievement data consisted of 211,086 summative scores of senior high school students from semesters 1 to 5. For qualitative data, the respondents filled in open-ended questions unveiling their viewpoints on instructional time decrease. The result between the correlation analysis and the teacher’s open-ended question seems inconsistent. Even though the statistical analysis does not indicate any direct relationship between instructional time decrease and students’ achievement where both summative and proficiency scores keep increasing during the period observed, from the teachers’ perspective, questionnaire data reported a significant tendency for the reduction in instructional time on learning achievement. Further analysis shows that in terms of students’ learning achievement and proficiency, instructional time decrease cannot be stated as a factor that directly influences students’ learning. However, from the teachers’ perspective, the reduction is believed to influence their students’ achievement and classroom management.

Abstract

Abstract

Motivation is one of the factors that influence student learning outcomes, especially science learning. Motivation has an impact on the results of students' learning and must be concerned to enhance student motivation. This research aims to investigate Junior High School students' motivation in science learning. The survey method, which is a quantitative research method, was used in this research. The instrument named Students' Motivation Towards Science Learning Questionnaire (SMTSLQ), and open-ended questions were applied to Junior High School students who studied in Junior High School, West Java, Indonesia. The participants of this research are 1018, with 622 female and 396 male students. The collected data was analyzed with descriptive statistics, then supported by the answers to open-ended questions from the students. The findings showed that the average self-efficacy is 3.38, active learning strategies is 3.83, science learning value is 3.68, performance goal is 2.9, achievement goal is 3.69, and learning environment stimulation is 3.39. The total average is 3.52, which means the students in Junior High School are categorized as having a high level of motivation in science learning. Based on the students' answers to open-ended questions, they are motivated to learn science because science is fun and interesting to learn, and teachers are able to provide experiences from experiments. Meanwhile, students who are not motivated to learn science because science is a complex subject and difficult to understand, and teachers who give a lot of assignments without experimentation

Abstract

Standardized tests remain crucial for students whose first language is not English in today’s globalized world, despite ongoing debates about their suitability. The purpose of this research is to develop an academic English proficiency test for higher education in Indonesia. The data were derived from a needs analysis conducted through focus group discussions (FGDs) and a pre-survey for the existing academic English proficiency test, followed by a test design process: creating a test blueprint and developing question items, and a second survey following a trial test with 538 test takers. The findings indicate that adjustments were required to the test format and duration, a basis for developing a new test format. Additionally, students reported a preference for computer-based tests. During the test design process, the research team revised the test, retained the test objectives, and modified the test item types. Lastly, post-test feedback and item analysis indicated an imbalance in item difficulty in the Structure and Written Expression section, while the Academic Listening and Academic Reading sections demonstrated relatively balanced difficulty levels. Overall, the findings of this research indicate a desire to revisit and refine the existing test to better meet students’ needs while maintaining its objectives.
