Introduction: This experiment was conducted experimentally to synthesize Calcia Partially Stabilized Zirconia (Ca-PSZ) by sol-gel method using eggshell membrane template as a composite filler. The eggshell membrane was used to produce a mesh shaped structure, which hopefully can improve the mechanical properties of the composite. Method: Ca-PSZ filler was synthesized from ZrOCl2 precursor and Ca(NO3)2 stabilizer with a 24 hours immersion time. Ca-PSZ of synthesis then mixed with the resin matrix to test its composite hardness. Result: The EDS characterization results suggested that the sample contained elements of zirconia, calcium, and oxygen. Whereas, the XRD characterization identified that crystal structures that formed in the sample were nano scale tetragonal. Characterization of SEM showed Ca-PSZ with mesh structured. The average composite hardness value was 15.79 VHN. Conclusion: The composites with Ca-PSZ-synthesized filler could be prepared and its hardness value was higher than the composite with Ca-PSZ filler in spherical particles, but the hardness was still below the composite on the market.

The post is used to retain a core that supports the definitive restoration. One of the important factors in the prognosis of post-endodontic restoration system is the post space preparation design which effects to the distribution of stresses. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of post space preparation design at the cervical area of the root to the stress distribution on static loading using (two dimensions) finite element method. This was a numeric simulation study using two 2D digital models: seat and non-seat design of maxillary central incisors using commercial software of finite element. The procedures of pre-processing, solution, and post-processing were used to evaluate the distribution of internal stress caused by static loading 110 N which was applied at 135° angle with tooth longitudinal axis on the palatal surface of the core. Both models of restoration with cast post-core of Orden alloy were divided into 15,400 triangular elements. This study showed that the stress distribution from the loading location to the location of stress concentration and the value of maximum stress at cervical part of the root at non-seat design was lower than the seat design (seat design 3.69 times greater than non-seat). This study proved that non-seat design distributes stress better than seat design.

Post-placement is one of the treatment plans supporting the success of a restoration. The design of root canal preparation is a factor in the success of post-use. The purpose of this study was to investigate the root fracture resistance of the root canal preparation for cast post with a seat and non-seat preparation. The study was a laboratory experimental study using 20 upper central incisors that met the criteria in the study. Ten incisors were prepared using seat design while the other ten were prepared using non-seat design. Then tested the compressive test by Universal Testing Machine with test speed 0,5 mm/min. The results of the fracture strength were analyzed using t student statistical test. The analysis showed a significant difference between the non-seat group and the seat group (α=0.05). The average force in the non-seat group was 852.27 N with a standard deviation of 112.6 N while the seat group showed a value of 495.78 N and 82.90 N, respectively. It was concluded therefore that the root fracture resistance in the non-seat root canal preparation design was higher than the seat preparation design.

Objective methods of determining the vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) offer significant advantages because no radiographs or others special measuring devices are required. One of the objective measurement of vertical dimension of occusion is twice the intercanthal distance (ICD). The purpose of this study was to compare whether there was a difference between the length of VDO and the length of twice the ICD among Mongoloid race, which was represented by eighty students, chosen randomly from undergraduate students of Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Padjadjaran that fulfilled all criteria stated. Result showed that there was no difference between the length of VDO and twice the ICD in this population. Thus, in this study, the ICD can be suggested as a method to determine the VDO in this population.

The success of endodontic treatment depends on the quality of endodontic treatment and the final restoration. The mean reason for endodontic treatment failure is usually microleakage. That is why it becomes one of the priorities for dental research to prevent microleakage. Infection during the root canal treatment can be prevented. First, by employing strict aseptic clinical techniques follows by cleaning all bacteria and preoperative necrotic pulp-tissue remnants from the root canal. Irrigants are essential in this phase. The shaping of the canal is also an important prerequisite for endodontic success. Removal of the smear layer can enhance seal ability. Second, obturation of the root canal should leave the tooth in the most biological inert condition possible, and it must prevent reinfection as well as the growth of any microorganisms remaining in the canal. The application of an antibacterial dressing between appointments is absolutely necessary or the root canal has to be obturated at the first appointment in order to deprive the microorganisms of nutrients and space to multiply. The temporary filling must be at least 3.5 mm thick. Failure occurs because of missed canals, iatrogenic events and radicular fractures have to be avoided. At the end, clinicians have to confirm that the root canal is cleaned and hermetically obturated because hermetic root canal filling will prevent the leakage of an irritant to the apical area.

Post is one element of the fixed restorations that is generally used to restore endodontically treated teeth at Prosthodontic Installation of Oral and Dental Hospital (RSGM) Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Padjadjaran, whereas Orden alloy is still used as cast post material. The faculty supplies Orden without packaging or manuals, so the information about its composition and mechanical properties are not available. This study was conducted to search the composition, tensile strength, and elastic modulus of Orden. For the composition test, a specimen with size 20x20x2 mm3 was tested with Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES). For tensile test, 6 specimens were made according to ASTM Standard E8. While for bending test, 6 specimens were made according to ASTM Standard E855. The Universal Testing Machine Instron 1195 was used to test the tensile strength and elastic modulus. The value of tensile strength of Orden was compared to gold alloy type III and the value of elastic modulus of Orden was compared to dentin. Composition test found that Orden was a brass with the largest ingredient of copper 53.76 wt%, followed by zinc 44.94 wt%, and aluminum 1.17 wt%. The statistic calculation showed that tensile strength of Orden was lower than gold alloy type III and the elastic modulus of Orden was higher than dentin.

Widely used materials are reported as denture cleansers are peroxide and hypochlorite. Many contradictions on the effectiveness of the commercial peroxide base solution against Candida albicans (C. albicans). Low concentration sodium hypochlorite (0.5%) is used as a household sanitizer. But it is still unknown whether it has an antifungal effect, what is the optimum concentration and contact time to destroy the yeast. The purpose of this study is to examine the antifungal efficacy of commercial peroxide-based soaking solution and low concentration sodium hypochlorite against C. albicans, to determine the optimum concentration and contact time, and at the end, to obtain an effective denture soaking solution which is safe to use, easy to get, affordable and could be used to destroy C. albicans on dentures. The research conducted was an in vitro practical test for surface disinfectant. Sixty plates of acrylic which were already incubated with C. albicans are immersed in peroxide and hypochlorite base soaking solution in different concentration and contact time. The result showed that peroxide base was not effective to C. albicans and hypochlorite base solution can destroy C. albicans in 10 minutes at a concentration of 0,125%. Thus, the use of low concentration sodium hypochlorite as a denture soaking solution can be suggested.

The Thumb Rule of Leonardo da Vinci states that many proportions of the face show relationship with the length of thumb which is measured from the proximal tip of the proximal phalanx to the distal tip of the distal phalanx. Previous studies have shown that the length of the vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) is similar to the length of thumb of the Caucasoid race. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the length of VDO have correlations with the length of thumb among those of the Mongoloid race. This study took a survey method with the analytical cross-sectional approach. A total of 80 students of Faculty of Dentistry who have fulfilled all population criteria were randomly chosen to measure the length of VDO and the length of the thumb. Results analyzed with Students t-test statistic revealed that there was a significant difference between males and females in the length of VDO and the length of the thumb, however, there was no significant difference between the length of VDO and the length of the thumb. There were very strong correlations (P<0.05) between the length of VDO and the length of the thumb. As a conclusion, the length of thumb can be suggested as an objective method to determine the length of VDO in this population.

Today the dental porcelain is used as one option for the manufacture of dental restorations with the development of esthetic dentistry. Beside the advantages there are also disadvantages of porcelain is its britlle so easily fracture. Factors such as impact, fatigue, occlusal pressure, and the mismatch between the physical properties of metals can lead to fracture of porcelain. Fractures often occur in the maxilla (75%) and especially on the labial surface (60%). Porcelain fracture in the anterior region will interfere with the appearance of the patient. Replacement of defective restorations are not necessarily the most practical solution because it takes a long time and cost.One alternative way to handle that is to repair in the mouth. Intraoral repair to do is to use a composite resin and an assortment of treatments on porcelain and metal surfaces such as coarsening with diamond drills, sandblasting and acid hidrofluoride applications.Next,applied primer and the selected composite materials which can be universal composites. Fracture of the porcelain restoration porcelain crowns can be repaired in the mouth in a simple manner. Repair materials are used together with direct composite materials differ only in the etching material.
