Abstract

The problem in first-class free end lever (distal extension base) Removable Partial Denture (RPD) is the lever force on the retention point that may harm the abutment tooth which has been discussed many times, but the amount of force on the fulcrum point (rest) on the abutment tooth has never discussed yet. The objective of this paper is to analyze the amount of force on the fulcrum point in the first class lever of lower free end denture on the two dimension static models. The analysis result reveals that the force on the fulcrum point is bigger than the mastication force on the free end saddle, or the force on the fulcrum point is equal to the sum of the force of the saddle and the force on the retention point. The force on the fulcrum point may cause trauma to the periodontal tissue of the abutment tooth. To decrease the amount of force on the fulcrum point is by mastication force limitation, decreasing the distance between the mastication point and the fulcrum point; and increasing the distance between retention point and fulcrum point. For clinical application, there are many biological variables to be considered.

Abstract

Objective methods of determining the vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) offer significant advantages because no radiographs or others special measuring devices are required. One of the objective measurement of vertical dimension of occusion is twice the intercanthal distance (ICD). The purpose of this study was to compare whether there was a difference between the length of VDO and the length of twice the ICD among Mongoloid race, which was represented by eighty students, chosen randomly from undergraduate students of Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Padjadjaran that fulfilled all criteria stated. Result showed that there was no difference between the length of VDO and twice the ICD in this population. Thus, in this study, the ICD can be suggested as a method to determine the VDO in this population.

Abstract

The Thumb Rule of Leonardo da Vinci states that many proportions of the face show relationship with the length of thumb which is measured from the proximal tip of the proximal phalanx to the distal tip of the distal phalanx. Previous studies have shown that the length of the vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) is similar to the length of thumb of the Caucasoid race. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the length of VDO have correlations with the length of thumb among those of the Mongoloid race. This study took a survey method with the analytical cross-sectional approach. A total of 80 students of Faculty of Dentistry who have fulfilled all population criteria were randomly chosen to measure the length of VDO and the length of the thumb. Results analyzed with Students t-test statistic revealed that there was a significant difference between males and females in the length of VDO and the length of the thumb, however, there was no significant difference between the length of VDO and the length of the thumb. There were very strong correlations (P<0.05) between the length of VDO and the length of the thumb. As a conclusion, the length of thumb can be suggested as an objective method to determine the length of VDO in this population.

Abstract

Introduction: Acrylic plates are the basis for several tools used in the oral cavity, including dentures and obturators. In its function, the acrylic plate is always in contact with the oral mucosa, so that good disinfection is needed without reducing the strength of the acrylic plate. Disinfection can be done by ultraviolet irradiation. This study is aimed to analyze the effect of ultraviolet light irraying on the growth of Candida albicans and the strength of transversal acrylic plate. Methods: This research is an experimental laboratory research with Replication Random Design. The disinfection success test was carried out by observing the population of the Candida albicans colony, while the acrylic plate transversal strength test was carried out on 35 acrylic heat curing plates tested according to ADA specifications. Results: Ultraviolet light can inhibit the growth of Candida albicans colonies with an optimum irradiation time of 20 minutes at a wavelength of 254nm. Meanwhile, ultraviolet irradiation on acrylic plates between 5-30 minutes shows a significant transverse strength. Conclusion: Ultraviolet light at appropriate wavelengths and times has been shown to significantly inhibit bacterial colony growth and significantly increase the transverse strength of acrylic plates.
