Abstract

Introduction: This experiment was conducted experimentally to synthesize Calcia Partially Stabilized Zirconia (Ca-PSZ) by sol-gel method using eggshell membrane template as a composite filler. The eggshell membrane was used to produce a mesh shaped structure, which hopefully can improve the mechanical properties of the composite. Method: Ca-PSZ filler was synthesized from ZrOCl2 precursor and Ca(NO3)2 stabilizer with a 24 hours immersion time. Ca-PSZ of synthesis then mixed with the resin matrix to test its composite hardness. Result: The EDS characterization results suggested that the sample contained elements of zirconia, calcium, and oxygen. Whereas, the XRD characterization identified that crystal structures that formed in the sample were nano scale tetragonal. Characterization of SEM showed Ca-PSZ with mesh structured. The average composite hardness value was 15.79 VHN. Conclusion: The composites with Ca-PSZ-synthesized filler could be prepared and its hardness value was higher than the composite with Ca-PSZ filler in spherical particles, but the hardness was still below the composite on the market.

Abstract

In early research, gypsum’s product from Padalarang and Tasikmalaya had been compared and it is found that Tasikmalaya gypsum was better. In these research, it’s used gypsum product from Tasikmalaya with wet calcination method using autoclave. This research consisted of four samples divided into three control groups and one treatment group. Research’s sample consisted of 45 units and 15 units data from the last research. To compared physical and mechanical properties, every samples was tested in three treatments. Research results showed that the average setting time, setting expansion and compressive strength of wet calcination gypsum product are respectively 487.6 seconds, 0.492%, and 12.708 Mpa. The results were statistically analyzed with MANOVA and Tukey test. The analysis showed differences in physical and mechanical properties between self made gypsum product from Tasikmalaya with Padalarang’s and two marketed gypsum products. Setting time self made gypsum product meets the ISO for type III, while compressive strength and setting expansion were not. But gypsum’s production from Tasikmalaya done by wet calcinations had better physical and mechanical properties, so it can be used in dentistry.

Abstract

The post is used to retain a core that supports the definitive restoration. One of the important factors in the prognosis of post-endodontic restoration system is the post space preparation design which effects to the distribution of stresses. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of post space preparation design at the cervical area of the root to the stress distribution on static loading using (two dimensions) finite element method. This was a numeric simulation study using two 2D digital models: seat and non-seat design of maxillary central incisors using commercial software of finite element. The procedures of pre-processing, solution, and post-processing were used to evaluate the distribution of internal stress caused by static loading 110 N which was applied at 135° angle with tooth longitudinal axis on the palatal surface of the core. Both models of restoration with cast post-core of Orden alloy were divided into 15,400 triangular elements. This study showed that the stress distribution from the loading location to the location of stress concentration and the value of maximum stress at cervical part of the root at non-seat design was lower than the seat design (seat design 3.69 times greater than non-seat). This study proved that non-seat design distributes stress better than seat design.

Abstract

The acrylic artificial teeth are still among the most frequently used artificial teeth. Some commercial brands marketed in Bandung claim that their products have met the existing standards. However, those brands do not give any mechanical property data, including data on hardness. The ADA specification standard no. 15 requires a hardness of minimum 15.00 KHN for acrylic artificial teeth. The aim of this study is to find out which acrylic artificial teeth actually have a standardized hardness value. The study is an analytical descriptive study, which is performed on 5 brands of acrylic artificial teeth marketed in Bandung. From each brand, 4 teeth were sampled and receive 10 indentation spots on the upper and lower surfaces. It is concluded that the five acrylic artificial teeth brands have met the ADA specification standard no. 15 and there are differences in hardness values among the five brands.

Abstract

Dimensional stability of alginate impression is very important for treatment in dentistry. This study was to find the effect of the beetle juice spray procedure on alginate impression on gypsum model linear dimensional changes. This experimental study used 25 samples, divided into 5 groups. The first group, as control, were the alginate impressions filled with dental stone immediately after forming. The other four groups were the alginate impressions gel spray each 1,2,3, and 4 times with 35% beetle juice and then filled with dental stone. Dimensional changes were measured in the lower part of the plaster model from buccal-lingual and mesial-distal direction and also measured in the outer distance between the upper part of the stone model by using Mitutoyo digital micrometre and profile projector scaled 0,001 mm. The results of mesial-distal diameter average of the control group and group 2,3,4, and 5 were 9.909 mm, 9.852 mm, 9.845 mm, 9.824 mm, and 9.754 mm. Meanwhile, the results of buccal-lingual diameter average were 9.847 mm, 9.841 mm, 9.826 mm, 9.776 mm, and 9.729 mm. The results of the outer distance between the upper part of the stone model were 31.739 mm, 31.689 mm, 31.682 mm, 31.670 mm, and 31.670 mm. The data of this study was evaluated statistically based on the variant analysis. The conclusion of this study was statistically, there was no significant effect on gypsum model linear dimensional changes obtained from alginate impressions sprayed with 35% beetle juice.

Abstract

Introduction: Varnish is one of the dental materials that can be used to protect the pulp. Raw materials for making varnish were easy to be obtained using simple technique and composition. Self-processed varnish which has 40 gr of copal, 50 ml of 95% alcohol and 10 ml of chloroform was produced. When applied, varnish formed a thin film layer which tend to porous. The purpose of this study was to analyze the comparison between porosity which formed in film layer of self-processed and  factory varnish. Method: This study was true experimental with  12 third upper molars that had been cut horizontally as specimens and were divided into 2 groups as treated and control groups. First group had 1, 2, 3 and 4 times application of processed varnish as treated sample and second group samples were applied with factory varnish as control sample. Porosity was tested using SEM then its percentage was calculated by comparing the  porosity and the tooth area. The data was then tested  with t- independent test. Result: The result showed that self-processed varnish obtained larger percentage of porosity. Started at the third application time, both processed and factory varnish showed no porosity. Conclusion: The conclusion of this study was that there is difference between  porosity which formed in film layer of self-processed and  factory varnish.

Abstract

Post is one element of the fixed restorations that is generally used to restore endodontically treated teeth at Prosthodontic Installation of Oral and Dental Hospital (RSGM) Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Padjadjaran, whereas Orden alloy is still used as cast post material. The faculty supplies Orden without packaging or manuals, so the information about its composition and mechanical properties are not available. This study was conducted to search the composition, tensile strength, and elastic modulus of Orden. For the composition test, a specimen with size 20x20x2 mm3 was tested with Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES). For tensile test, 6 specimens were made according to ASTM Standard E8. While for bending test, 6 specimens were made according to ASTM Standard E855. The Universal Testing Machine Instron 1195 was used to test the tensile strength and elastic modulus. The value of tensile strength of Orden was compared to gold alloy type III and the value of elastic modulus of Orden was compared to dentin. Composition test found that Orden was a brass with the largest ingredient of copper 53.76 wt%, followed by zinc 44.94 wt%, and aluminum 1.17 wt%. The statistic calculation showed that tensile strength of Orden was lower than gold alloy type III and the elastic modulus of Orden was higher than dentin.

Abstract

Introduction: Dental alginate impression material is the most common material used in dentistry. However, dental alginate waste (DAW) is one of the causes of the increasing number of dentistry and medicinal wastes. This research was aimed to discover the effect of dental alginate impression waste as additional fertiliser on the plant yields by determining the weight of cauliflower crop, and towards the quality of soil by determining the soil pH (Ultisol® Jatinangor). Methods: The experiment was using a randomised block design with 4 treatments and 7 times replications. The treatment consisted of A0 (0% DAW as control), A1 (0.01% DAW), A2 (0.1% DAW), and A3 (1% DAW). Results: The weight of cauliflower after addition of DAW in group A0 was 72.78; A1 was 139.82); A2 was 130.69; and A3 was 60.72). While the pH soil in group A0 was 5.92; A1 was 6.07; A2 was 6.02; and A3 was 6.26. The treatment in the A1 and A2 groups were found as the significant doses that able to increase the cauliflower weight for consecutively 1.92 times and 1.80 times compared to the control group, while on the soil quality improvement (soil pH), the addition of DAW was not significantly affected. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the addition of dental alginate waste at the dose of 0.01% and 0.1% increased the weight of cauliflower, but has no significant effect on the soil quality.

Abstract

Introduction: Several factor limits of services of dental composite have triggered further improvement. ZrO2-Al2O3-SiO2 system as filler of dental composite had been developed with sol-gel technique. Ultrasonic homogeniser were reported to change the particle size ditribution or shape. Unifom size and distribution of particle is believed to help define the behavior of hardness properties. Methods: The study was an laboratory experimental design. Filler ZrO2-Al2O3-SiO2 system were developed via sol-gel methods. Post calcination process, filler were immerse in ethanol and applied with ultrasonic homogeniser, with various amplitude i.e 50 rpm, 60 rpm and 80 rpm then named sample A, B, and C. XRD, SEM anda PSA were used to characterize of filler system. Subsequent filler were used to fabricate dental composite then evaluate the hardness value using micro-hardness tester. One–way ANOVA was used to analysis the statistical result of hardness value. Results: XRD pattern of three sample were similar in which tetragonal zirconia was prominent (57-61 %) followed by monoclinic zirconia (24-25%) and amorphous (15-17 %). While, SEM and PSA characterization showed amplitude 50 rpm (sample A) produce more uniform size and well-distributed particle filler than the others. In contrary, sample B and C showed higher peak in PSA results. It means there was dominating of filler with particular size.  However, the hardness value did not show significant differences between those filler (p>0,05). Conclusion: Dental composite that contain of different uniformity and distribution of filler ZrO2-Al2O3-SiO2 system has no significantly differences of hardness value.

Abstract

Pendahuluan: Permintaan porselen sebagai salah satu bahan restorasi kedokteran gigi semakin meningkat. Secara umum, praktisi mengetahui bahwa terdapat dua jenis porselen yang dapat dipesan dari laboratorium kedokteran gigi yaitu porselen fusi logam dan porselen penuh. Namun, praktisi sering bingung dalam memilih restorasi yang tepat sesuai kasus. Studi literatur ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pengetahuan untuk membantu praktisi dalam memilih penggunaan porselen fusi logam atau porselen penuh. Metode: Literatur review ini dilakukan dengan cara mengumpulkan artikel dari jurnal-jurnal dan buku-buku yang berhubungan dengan Porselen fusi logam dan porselen penuh. Kemudian dianalisis dan dipaparkan Telaah Pustaka: Porselen fusi logam memiliki kekuatan dan kekerasan yang lebih tinggi daripada beberapa jenis porselen penuh. Namun, porselen fusi logam memerlukan ruang yang lebih tebal dan kandungan logamnya mengurangi estetik. Porselen fusi logam juga bertentangan dengan konsep metal-free dentistry. Harga logam yang lebih murah menyebabkan harga restorasi porselen fusi logam juga lebih murah dibanding porselen penuh. Pembahasan. Dalam menentukan performa yang lebih baik, evaluasi dapat dilakukan hanya dengan melihat bahan yang digunakan pada suatu restorasi. Evaluasi holistik dan struktural juga perlu dilakukan untuk mengetahui performa pada kesatuan restorasi. Kelebihan dan kekurangan porselen fusi logam dan porselen penuh perlu dijadikan pertimbangan dalam pemilihan dan penempatan restorasi yang akan digunakan. Simpulan: Performa yang lebih baik akan ditunjukkan apabila jenis porselen disesuaikan dengan karakteristik gigi asli dan keadaan mukosa oral yang digantikan serta sesuai dengan keinginan dan kemampuan pasien.Introduction: Demand for porcelain as the restorative materials in dentistry is increasing. Dental practitioners know that there are two types of porcelain that can ordered from dental laboratory, which are metal fusion and full porcelain. However, dental practitioners often confused in choosing which restoration is appropriate for certain cases. This literature study was aimed to provide knowledge to help dental practitioners in the proper selection in the usage of metal fusion or full porcelain. Methods: This literature review was conducted by collecting articles from journals and books related to metal fusion and full porcelain, then analysed and presented in the manuscript. Literature Review: Metal fusion porcelain had higher strength and hardness than the full porcelain types. However, metal fusion porcelain required a thicker space, and its metal content reducing the aesthetical aspect. Metal fusion porcelain also contradicted the concept of metal-free dentistry. The lower price of the metal compound had caused the low price of the metal fusion porcelain compared to the full porcelain. Discussion: In determining better performance, evaluation can be performed simply by looking at the materials used in restoration. A holistic and structural evaluation was also necessary to determine the performance of the restoration unit. The advantages and disadvantages of metal fusion and full porcelain should be taken into account in the selection and placement of the restoration used. Conclusion: Better performance will be shown if the porcelain type was managed to adapting with the original teeth characteristics and the oral mucosal state replaced, and also in accordance with the wishes and abilities of the patient.
