Abstract

The objective of this research is to know whether there was any correlation between students’ speaking skill taught using retelling and taught by using conventional technique. The type of this research used experimental research. The quasi-experimental design which used here was nonequivalent control group Design. The designs include both experimental group and a control group, but subjects are not randomly assigned. In these designs, first, the experimental group and the control group were given a pretest, then after the treatment each of the groups were given a posttest. It was done with two classes which taught using retelling technique and another class taught using conventional strategy. In collecting the data, the data in this research was speaking test. Test was used to measure the ability of students. In this research the test was speaking test to see the comprehension of students in retelling in speaking. The population of the research was all of the second semester of STIE-SAK academic year 2021/2022. There were two classes at second semester of STIE-SAK on accountant major. In analyzing the data, the researcher calculated and analyzed all of data. From the data analysis, the result of test shows that there is a significant difference of the students’ achievement taught using retelling rather than the students’ achievement who was not taught using retelling. The mean of students’ scores in experimental group is 73,36 and in the control group is 67,58. There was difference between two classes from t-test result than t-table, tcount= 0,35 > ttable= 0.05. It was also supported by the mean scores gained by the students. The students’ mean score for the students who were taught using retelling were higher than the students’ mean scores who were not taught using retelling, it was 73,36 for experiment class and 67,58 for control class. It means that the mean of the students score in experimental group is higher than in control group. The results of hypothesis testing also proved that the using of retelling technique is better than the using of conventional strategy in teaching speaking.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah ada hubungan antara keterampilan berbicara mahasiswa yang diajarkan menggunakan retelling dan yang diajarkan dengan menggunakan teknik konvensional. Jenis penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian eksperimen. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester 1 Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Ekonomi Sakti Alam Kerinci. Ada dua kelas yang akan digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol. Untuk kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol diberi pretest, kemudian setelah diberikan tes akan dilakukan penelitian dengan mengajarkan kedua kelas dengan teknik yang berbeda yaitu teknik retelling dan teknik konvensional untuk melihat bagaimanakah ketrampilan mahasiswa setelah diterapkan teknik retelling. Setelah itu masing-masing kelas akan diberikan diberi posttest. Hal itu dilakukan dengan dua kelas yang diajar menggunakan teknik menceritakan kembali dan satu kelas lainnya diajar dengan menggunakan strategi konvensional. Dalam mengumpulkan data dalam penelitian ini kan digunakan tes berbicara. Tes digunakan untuk mengukur kemampuan mahasiswa. Dengan. Teknik Retelling adalah teknik yang sangat bagus digunakan untuk meningkatkan ketrampilan berbicara mahasiswa karena teknik ini membantu mahasiswa dalam memberikan ide sehingga mempermudahkan mereka untuk berbicara. Oleh karena itu, peneliti akan menggunakan Retelling untuk meningkatkan ketrampilan mahasiswa dalam berbicara. Jadi peneliti akan melakukan penelitian dengan judul “Meningkatkan Ketrampilan Bercerita Mahasiswa Tahun Pertama STIE-SAK Dengan Menggunakan Teknik Retelling Tahun Ajaran 2022/2023”

Abstract

This research was done in order to get description about students’ skill in storytelling. The researcher would analyze and describe the students’ speaking skill of the second semester students at STIE-SAK academic year 2025/2026. This research was descriptive research, and the population in this research was all of the second semester students at TIE-SAK. There were some classes of second semester students at STIE-SAK which was homogeny and they were taught by the same lecturer so the researcher needed to choose the sample of the research by using cluster sampling. The instrument in this research was speaking test. Test was collected from the students’ performance of their speaking. They were asked to speak in English and they would tell story based on their experience in front of the class one by one, and the researcher would record it and then analyzed the test by using speaking scoring rubric to see the students’ ability in storytelling. Based on the finding of the research, the researcher gets conclusion that the students’ skill in storytelling of the second semester students at STIE-SAK academic year 2025/2026 was low. The data has proved that the students had low speaking ability. There were four students got A or it was about 14,28% of them got very good score. There were 7 students got B or (25%, 6 students got C, 3 students got D, and there were 8 students got E. It could be said the students at the second semester students at STIE-SAK had low speaking ability.
