Abstract

Culturally-based mathematics learning becomes an important alternative to overcome students' learning difficulties. One relevant cultural product is Jepara Carving Art, which contains geometric concepts as part of ethnomathematics. This study aims to describe the mathematical concepts embedded in Jepara carving art and implement them as an alternative culturally-based mathematics learning method. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and field notes, with the research subjects being Jepara carving artisans. The results show that the mathematical concepts integrated into Jepara carving art include points, lines, angles, slopes (gradients), plane geometry, circles, solid geometry, congruence, and geometric transformations such as reflection and rotation. Additionally, the ethnomathematics of Jepara carving art can be implemented as an alternative culturally-based mathematics learning method, where several ethnomathematical activities relate to school mathematics materials. These findings emphasize the importance of linking local culture with mathematics learning to enhance students' understanding. Therefore, this study recommends the inclusion of Jepara carving art in the curriculum as an effective strategy for culturally-based mathematics learning.

Abstract

This research aims to develop an effective learning design for understanding the concept of exponentiation by applying the Discovery Learning model using the Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) as the framework foundation. The research method used is a design research method consisting of three main stages: preliminary design, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis. The initial stage involves literature analysis and the design of an HLT tailored to the concept of exponentiation. The instructional design is based on the prepared HLT and tested through two experimental stages: pilot experiment and teaching experiment. Retrospective analysis is conducted to compare the initial HLT with the Actual Learning Trajectory (ALT) achieved during the learning process. Data is collected through observation to monitor learning activities and environmental conditions, as well as through recordings of learning activities to gain an understanding of student participation in the design experiments. Additionally, Student Worksheets (SW) are used as aids for students to understand the concept of exponentiation, and evaluation questions are used to measure students' learning outcomes in the subject matter. Interviews are also conducted to gain a deeper understanding from the student's perspective. The results of this research make a significant contribution to the development of more effective mathematics learning methods, particularly in understanding the concept of exponentiation, and provide guidance for teachers to design learning that is more relevant to students' daily lives. The implications of the research results provide guidelines for teachers in designing learning that is more relevant to students' daily lives.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the difficulties students face in solving problems related to proportional comparison. This study employs a case study method based on the errors made by students in solving problems related to proportional comparison. Four students were selected as a theoretical sample from a group of 34 seventh-grade students at the junior high school in Tasikmalaya. These students were chosen due to their complex levels of errors, which included procedural errors, incomplete solutions, and mistakes in determining mathematical formulas. The results of the study indicate that students experience difficulties in solving proportional comparison problems, including: (1) difficulty in understanding mathematical language, (2) difficulty in understanding word problems, (3) the influence of mathematics anxiety, and (4) differences in learning styles. Interviews and classroom observations revealed that factors such as less varied teaching methods, a lack of contextual practice, and low learning motivation contribute to the difficulties experienced by students. The discussion of the research results emphasizes the importance of more interactive and contextual teaching approaches to enhance students' understanding of the concept of proportional comparison. The implications of this study highlight the need for the development of more innovative teaching materials and the use of educational technology to help students overcome these difficulties.

Abstract

This study aims to design and implement Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) on set material with the context of school snacks for Junior High School students. The main focus of this study is to support students' understanding of basic set concepts, such as subsets, intersections, and unions, through a contextual approach that is relevant to students' daily lives. The research method used is educational design research, which includes the planning, implementation, and analysis phases of learning outcomes. The subjects of the study were grade VII students at a junior high school in Tasikmalaya City. The research instruments included: observation sheets, concept understanding tests, and interviews to explore students' thinking processes during learning. The results showed that the use of the school snack context was relevant to the topic of sets and was able to increase students' interest and motivation in learning set material. Students' conceptual understanding also increased significantly, especially in identifying set elements, as well as understanding intersections and unions between sets through visual representations and group activities. The discussion of these results emphasizes that HLT with everyday contexts, such as school snacks, provides opportunities to link abstract material to students' real experiences, thus facilitating meaningful learning. The implementation of this research provides practical implications for teachers in designing context-based learning that can be used for other materials, as well as a reference for developing a curriculum that is more relevant to life.
