Abstract

The development of contemporary hadith studies has demonstrated a paradigmatic shift from textual approaches toward more contextual and hermeneutical perspectives. In this regard, Khaled M. Abou El-Fadl and Yusuf al-Qaradawi represent two influential scholars who offer distinct epistemological models for understanding hadith. This study aims to analyze and compare the epistemology of hadith hermeneutics developed by both scholars, particularly concerning the relationship between textual authority and contextualization. Employing a qualitative method through library research and comparative analysis, this study examines the primary works of the two figures. The findings reveal that Khaled M. Abou El-Fadl advances a negotiative hermeneutics that views meaning as the product of interaction among the author, the text, and the reader, thereby preventing authoritarian interpretations. In contrast, Yusuf al-Qaradawi develops a hadith interpretation framework grounded in maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, asbāb al-wurūd, and the distinction between legislative (tashrī‘iyyah) and non-legislative (ghayr tashrī‘iyyah) Sunnah to maintain the relevance of hadith across changing social contexts. The study finds that the primary difference between the two scholars lies in their respective conceptions of textual authority and the scope of contextualization, although both seek to ensure the continued relevance of hadith in modern Muslim societies. This research contributes to contemporary hadith hermeneutics by providing a comparative mapping of critical and maqāṣid-oriented interpretive models within hadith studies.

Abstract

The theological divergence between Sunni and Shia interpretations of the Hadith of Ghadir Khum remains a persistent issue in Islamic discourse, particularly within the digital sphere. This study aims to analyze how two online Islamic media portals, Panjimas.com and ShiahIndonesia.com, frame the Ghadir Khum event and its implications for leadership in Islam. The research applies Robert M. Entman's framing model, encompassing four elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgment, and treatment recommendation. The findings reveal that Panjimas.com frames the Hadith of Ghadir Khum as a theological misinterpretation by the Shia that requires correction. It emphasizes the term mawla as meaning "helper" rather than "leader," thus taking a delegitimizing stance toward Shia claims of imamate. Conversely, ShiahIndonesia.com employs an affirmative framing, interpreting Ghadir Khum as a spiritual and social declaration of Ali bin Abi Thalib's leadership and as a continuation of prophetic authority within the doctrine of imamate. Consequently, both media represent contrasting ideological orientations: Panjimas.com upholds Sunni orthodoxy through a discourse of rejection, while ShiahIndonesia.com reinforces Shia identity through a discourse of affirmation. These differing frames demonstrate that the Hadith of Ghadir Khum functions not merely as a religious text but as a symbolic arena of meaning and authority contestation within the contemporary Islamic digital public sphere.

Abstract

Studies of living hadith have largely emphasized local rituals and community-based religious practice, leaving the role of platform algorithms, digital authority, and audience participation in shaping hadith transmission underexplored. This article addresses that gap by examining how hadith is lived through algorithmic mediation among young Indonesian Muslims. Using a qualitative approach based on netnography of hadith-based content on TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts, the study investigates: (1) how the form and circulation of hadith transform within algorithmic media; (2) how religious authority is negotiated among digital preachers, da'wah influencers, and audiences; and (3) how young Muslims receive, negotiate, and practice hadith encountered on social media. Findings show hadith undergoing an epistemic shift into concise, visual, emotionally resonant content whose visibility algorithms shape more than chains of transmission do. Religious authority becomes increasingly distributed, negotiated through communicative closeness and engagement metrics, at times in tension with sanad-based legitimacy. This mediation shapes youth piety through improved worship, hijrah, and everyday moral conduct, while exposing hadith to the risk of decontextualization. The article proposes algorithmic living hadith as a framework that extends living hadith studies into the digital-algorithmic space, contributing to digital religion scholarship by positioning algorithms as active mediators of religious meaning.
