Abstract

The Islamic social finance industry in Indonesia is one of the industries that is growing very rapidly every year. This can be seen from the growth in the number of zakat management institutions that continue to increase, both those formed by the government and those formed by the community. The rapid development of the number of zakat management institutions raises the level of competition between zakat institutions getting stronger. To be able to compete in this industry, Dompet Dhuafa as one of the zakat management institutions must be able to compete with other zakat management institutions by improving performance optimally. The purpose of this study is to analyze the level of performance efficiency and productivity of Dompet Dhuafa for the 2010-2019 period based on the type of funds it manages. The methods used in this research are Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) methods. The estimation results show that Dompet Dhuafa has not achieved an optimal level of performance efficiency and relatively low productivity. This can be seen from the average efficiency score from 2010-2019 which only reached 0.66 and the average productivity level of Dompet Dhuafa reached 0.958.

Abstract

This article summarizes William Barylo's work examining the dynamics of social movements and philanthropy among young Muslims in Europe through field studies of eleven organizations in France, Poland, and the UK. The book highlights the emergence of small-scale Muslim charities initiated by the younger generation within the contexts of secularism, Islamophobia, and contemporary social crises. Using a phenomenological approach, Barylo explores how religiosity, identity, and social participation shape the activism of young Muslims, which is not only religious but also political and humanistic. Through social charity, they reveal a face of Islam that is humanistic, active, and progressive—not as objects of policy, but as subjects of social change. This movement proves that Islam can be a source of social innovation and participatory democracy in Europe.

Abstract

This article summarizes and analyzes the concept of the Islamic finance trading framework as explained by Mohsin Ali and Najeeb Zada in The Islamic Finance Trading Framework: Legitimizing Profit Making (2019). The book seeks to build theoretical and practical legitimacy for trading and profit-making activities in Islam. Through an elaboration of Islamic commercial law, Shariah financial contracts, and comparison with the conventional system, this work asserts that Islam does not reject profit but places it within the bounds of justice, honesty, and Shariah ethics. Islam transforms the paradigm of profit from merely an economic value into a moral instrument that reflects social responsibility. By rejecting riba, gharar, and maysir, the Islamic trading system presents an economic mechanism that is more stable and just. This model is not only an alternative to conventional capitalism but also offers an ethical foundation that can improve global economic governance.

Abstract

This article summarizes and analyzes the main ideas in the book Social Capital and Risk Sharing: An Islamic Finance Paradigm by Ng, Mirakhor, and Ibrahim (2015). The book asserts that social capital is a fundamental element for the success of an Islamic financial system based on risk sharing and distributive justice. Using a content analysis approach, this article discusses the relationship between social capital, ethics, and market stability, and assesses the relevance of modern instruments such as equity crowdfunding, waqf–social impact partnerships, and macro-market instruments in operationalizing the Islamic finance paradigm. The main conclusion is that strengthening social capital, through mechanisms of ethics, solidarity, and Shariah compliance, is a primary prerequisite for realizing a just, stable, and sustainable Islamic financial system.
