Abstract

The study of Sharia-compliant policy tends to be seen only in the aspect of output, while processes and mechanisms are not much attention. Sharia-compliant policy is actually born from Islamic processes and systems that provide a conducive space for its emergence. The existence of Islamic political parties as the forces involved in legislation is very important toexamine to see the aspects of sharia in the process of making it. Through this qualitative approach, this paper dissects the mechanism of policy formulation applied by Islamic political parties, in this case the Development Unity Party(PPP) to see the relation between process and output. DOI: 10.15408/ajis.v17i2.6234

Abstract

The millennial generation and social media are like two sides of a coin. Social media has become an inherent identity of the main characteristics of the millennial generation, who are adaptive, innovative, and pragmatic. Under these conditions, this research studies whether social media disproportionately impacts the behaviours of the millennial generation, especially in the era of the Covid-19 pandemic, which demands online interactions. Through qualitative methods, this article is based on the analysis of documents related to religious identity politics on social media and is strengthened by in-depth interviews. From data analysis and interviews, it is evident that the millennial generation accesses social media more than just as a medium of entertainment. It is also driven by the interests of communication and seeking answers to problems of life. Even if the millennial generation accesses platforms that lead to religious identity politics, it is more driven by a momentary curiosity about the issues that are present in their minds, except for those who have been indoctrinated by an exclusive religious understanding from the start and place politics as an inseparable part of their religious identity.

Abstract

The growth of Islamic organization in Indonesian is difficult to release from politics. Although historically it was born as a cultural response, but in the presence, the development of organization is difficult to avoid “politics temptation”. This can be seen on Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) as one of the largest Islamic organizations in Indonesia. NU was not born from the political will, but rather as a response to socio-cultural development of society at that time. However, even though NU’s involvement in politics is not designed from birth, in fact NU able to play the phenomenal political role. This shows that NU inherently has a reference (thought) as the basis of the political practices. This paper will examine the political ideas of reference used by NU. One of them is thought of Imam Al-Mawardī especially in his monumental work, Al-Aḥkām Al-Sulthāniyyah which is a common reference of Sunni politics.

Abstract

There is a correlation between one's religious understanding and their attitude towards other religions. An exclusive understanding of religion has triggered the emergence of religious egocentrism, which considers other religions as wrong. This attitude is mainly fueled by a legalistic orientation that tends to be black and white and denies the truth of others. It is this biased legalistic orientation that needs to be reconstructed so that one-sided and exclusive understandings of religion can dissolve, ultimately breaking the rigidity of interactions between religious communities that have often been the seeds of unnecessary humanitarian tragedies. And this is the overarching theme that this journal seeks to address for the sake of peace on the earth we all inhabit together.

Abstract

Debates regarding the compatibility of Islam and democracy have thrived, with a focus on political moderation and post-Islamism to explain changes among Islamist groups. However, there’s been little exploration into the historical evolution of their ideologies and political preferences in religious politics. This study examines the role of ideas and politics within Muslim organizations, political parties, and the state in Indonesia. It emphasizes the mechanisms behind both ideology and political motivations, showing how political Islam adopted pragmatic behaviour before entering democratic politics. The interaction between the ideological renewals of Muslim thinkers in the 1970s and changes in the state’s institutional arrangement under the New Order drove Islamic transformation. Political institutions shape Islamic political ideas and their manifestation, influencing cultural identity, political mobilization, and negotiation of group claims. Muslim leadership acts as agents in defining religious interests based on institutional markers.

Abstract

Abstract. This research aims to determine the birth process, the dynamics of the formulation, and the impact of the licensing policy for ex-corruption convicts to participate in elections. By using qualitative research methods and public policy theory, political elites, and corruption, this study found that the licensing policy for ex-corruption convicts in elections is a political process on the basis of providing opportunities for ex-corruption convicts as part of human rights which is then set forth in Law Number 7 of 2017 as a legal decree. Therefore, General Election Commission Regulation (PKPU) Number 20 of 2018 which prohibits ex-corruption convicts from becoming election participants is in itself considered deviant. This policy reaped a lot of controversy and rejection from society, but on the pretext of providing opportunities and fulfilling human rights, the political process came to a decision to be legalized through law. As a result, in the midst of public knowledge about the limited track record of politicians and the attitude of the people towards non-corruption which tends to be permissive, legislative candidates with backgrounds of corruption convicts have emerged and some have been elected in political contests at both the local and national levels. Keywords: Political rights, Ex-Corruption Convicts, Elections, Public Policy, Political Elite.
