Abstract

Abstract

The growth of Islamic organization in Indonesian is difficult to release from politics. Although historically it was born as a cultural response, but in the presence, the development of organization is difficult to avoid “politics temptation”. This can be seen on Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) as one of the largest Islamic organizations in Indonesia. NU was not born from the political will, but rather as a response to socio-cultural development of society at that time. However, even though NU’s involvement in politics is not designed from birth, in fact NU able to play the phenomenal political role. This shows that NU inherently has a reference (thought) as the basis of the political practices. This paper will examine the political ideas of reference used by NU. One of them is thought of Imam Al-Mawardī especially in his monumental work, Al-Aḥkām Al-Sulthāniyyah which is a common reference of Sunni politics.

Abstract

Islamic political parties in Indonesia face two dilemmas: structural and cultural. Structurally, Islamic principles are not compatible with the state ideology, which positions religion as a social entity rather than a formal reference for the state. Culturally, Islamic political parties do not exhibit the distinctiveness of their principles in aggregating and articulating the aspirations of society. There is even a tendency to extend their roles as an effort to gain support without being bound to their principles. Given this situation, what is the significance of principles for political parties? In the context of Islamic principles, what can be expected from the existence and function of Islamic political parties in the national political constellation?

Abstract

One of the agenda of political parties (based on) Islam in Indonesia is the coloring legislation with Islamic values, including legislation for public interest. Islam as a religion with its distinctive teaching device can be a problem dealing with pluralistic social reality, both religion and cultural. Therefore, standard formulation is required in formulating Islamic values to be part of the legislation so that it can be accepted by the public in general. This is where Islamic political parties are required to have the ability to formulate Islamic values as the implementation as well as the type of Islam as the principle of political parties.
