Abstract

Performance-based assessments such as portfolios, presentations, and participation are now widely used in many English language education programs in public and private universities. There is significant research in the literature on teachers' attitudes toward these types of assessment approaches, but few have explored students' views on these types of assessment techniques. The aim of this study was to find out the attitudes of adult students towards performance based assessments and traditional tests and to see the relationship between length of study and performance based assessments and tests. This research applied a questionnaire to explore the opinions of adult English students (N=110) regarding performance-based assessments (portfolios, presentations and participation) and traditional types of test assessments. The quantitative findings indicate that the four forms of assessment were positively perceived by the participants in this study. The analysis of the background variables revealed that the length of the study had an interactive effect on students' opinions regarding this assessment method. Other background characteristics did not influence the students’ attitudes.

Abstract

Students’ problems in learning English often stem from a lack of exposure to the language, insufficient practice opportunities, and challenges with grammar and vocabulary, which collectively hinder their overall proficiency and confidence. The purpose of this study is to measure students’ ability in mastering English. The method used in this study is a descriptive quantitative approach, conducted at SMP Negeri 3 Kuala Batee. The total number of participants was 27 students, and the data were collected using a test with 50 questions. The results of the study indicated that the students’ ability in mastering English was classified into high, moderate, and low categories. High abilities were evident in mastering main idea identification, understanding text purposes, and recognizing text types. Moderate abilities were observed in conversational skills, identifying supporting details in reading, pronoun reference, passive voice, and word meanings. Low abilities were noted in expressing congratulations and hope, understanding text structure and genres, conversations, simple past tense, comprehension of advertisements, word meanings, and using "to be" and pronouns. These findings suggest that while students have a good grasp of certain aspects of English, significant gaps remain, particularly in grammatical rules and expressive language. The students should learn more about English grammatical rules because this area was categorized into low ability, indicating a need for targeted instructional strategies to address these deficiencies and improve overall language proficiency.

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the use of time token technique in improving students speaking skill. The researcher adopted experimental approach type pretest and posttest control group design to overcome the problem faced by students in learning speaking skill. An oral speaking test was designed to be used as research instrument in order to collect the data needed for this study. The researcher used speaking criteria that proposed by Brown (2004) to analyze the result of the test. Thus, some statistical formula (t-test) from Sudjana (2002) were also used to measure the improvement of students’ speaking skill in pretest and posttest for experimental and control class. The result revealed that t-score (8.7) > t-table (1.68), so there is an improvement of students’ speaking skill in experimental group after taught by using time token technique aided descriptive text. It means that time token technique is effective to be used in teaching process, and can be one of the alternative techniques used by teacher in teaching speaking for English as foreign language class

Abstract

This study analyzes the difficulties experienced by second-semester students at STKIP Muhammadiyah Aceh Barat Daya in developing ideas in writing paragraphs. This study uses a qualitative case study approach with semi-structured interviews as the main instrument, with 15 students. The results of the study show that students often have difficulties in coherently arranging ideas, choosing the right vocabulary, and understanding correct grammar. The main factors that cause this difficulty are a lack of in-depth understanding of the topic being written, limited time in completing the task, as well as the challenge of connecting ideas logically in paragraphs. In addition, the results of the study revealed that the teaching methods applied by lecturers, such as giving real examples and constructive feedback, help students in improving their writing skills. However, students still face obstacles in applying the theories they have learned into effective writing practices. The study also found that strategies such as brainstorming, mind mapping, and peer discussions helped students develop their ideas before starting the formal writing process. Overall, this study emphasizes the importance of a deep understanding of the topic, adequate time allocation, and effective pedagogical support in helping students overcome difficulties in developing ideas in paragraph writing. These findings provide valuable insights for educators in designing more effective teaching strategies to improve students' writing skills.

Abstract

This research explores the transition of novice teachers from higher education to professional practice, focusing on the impact of college learning experiences and early teaching experiences on their professional readiness, teaching effectiveness, and the development of pedagogical skills and professional identity. Through a qualitative case study approach involving 15 novice teachers, the study examines how theoretical foundations acquired in higher education contribute to teaching preparedness, while also identifying the challenges posed by the gap between theory and classroom practice. The findings reveal that while higher education provides a solid theoretical framework, novice teachers often feel underprepared for the complexities of real-world teaching. Early teaching experiences, such as practicum and internships, are crucial in bridging this gap, allowing teachers to apply theoretical knowledge in practical contexts, develop classroom management strategies, and adapt to diverse student needs. The study underscores the importance of continuous support from mentors and collaboration with colleagues in fostering professional growth and confidence among novice teachers. The research concludes that to enhance the effectiveness of teacher education programs, there is a need to integrate more practical experiences with theoretical learning and to create a collaborative, supportive learning environment. This approach would better prepare novice teachers for the challenges of the classroom and contribute to their long-term professional success.
