Abstract

The tourism sector now is seen as a promising sector to increase the nation's foreign exchange revenues. Therefore, a strategic effort such as providing special English language training for tourism employees in order to attract more tourists is needed. However, to produce a research program that can have a major impact on the participants, a needs analysis related to the desired outcomes has to be employed. This study aimed at finding and describing the needs of tourism employees for English language skills. Identification of difficulties during the interaction process in the field is also the focus of research so that it can be used as input in designing training programs. This research is quantitative research with survey research methods. A questionnaire with open and close-ended questions was given to 22 tourism employees at and around Gili Labak Island. The data were analyzed with mathematical computation to obtain the frequency, percentage, and mean scores. The results showed that the most important skills to be mastered by the tourism employee was listening skill (m= 4,5), followed by speaking (m=4,4), writing (m=4,1), and reading (m=3,9) respectively. In terms of problems faced by the tourism employee, they revealed that speaking skill was the most skill that experienced frequent errors during the interaction, then followed by listening, reading, and writing.

Abstract

Bangkalan is one of the preferred tourist destinations in East Java because of its culture and culinary diversity. However, discussions about culinary are inseparable from culture. To raise public awareness of the cultural heritage richness of Bangkalan halal culinary, an analysis related to culture and culinary has to be carried on. This research aimed to analyze the semiotic and philosophical meaning of Bangkalan's halal culinary (Tajin Sobih, Nasi Serpang, and Topak Ladeh), which represents the cultural identity of Bangkalan people. This research is qualitative descriptive with a semiotic analysis approach of Charles Peirce's triadic model to analyze the visual composition of food. Data collection techniques used are observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out by processing signs and symbols in words into meaningful information. From the result analysis, it can be affirmed that each culinary has a variety of meanings that represent the value of community unity, prosperity, friendship, togetherness, and cultural heritage richness of Bangkalan people. The strengths of the three culinary arts are in the form of historical content, philosophical values, and religious beliefs so that they can foster public interest in visiting Bangkalan.

Abstract

Motif batik Madura memiliki nilai dan makna filosofis yang unik dan berbeda dengandaerah lain. Motif batik Madura memiliki semiotika yang mendalam untuk merepresentasikan kebudayaan Madura. Motif batik Madura yang unik dan berbeda inilah yang menarik para pecinta batik untuk membeli batik Madura. Dari sinilah erekonomiaan pengrajin batik di Madura dapat berkembang dan nantinya dapat meningkatkan perekonomian masyarakat Madura secara meyeluruh. Karena disadari atau tidak komoditi batik menjadi salah satu daya tarik pulau Madura selain garam dan ekowisatanya yang sudah dikenal secara luas.Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menjelaskan dan menganalisis makna filosofis batik tulis Madura menggunakan telaah semiotika dan menemukan langkah diplomasi  budaya yang tepat untuk menduniakan batik tulis Madura. Motif batik tulis Madura tersebut akan dianalisa menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Dari hasil analisa tersebut, dapat diklasifikasikan makna filosofis tiap motif batik tulis. Kemudian dapat dipetakan keunikan dan ciri khas dari batik tulis Madura. Setiap motif bati Madura juga memiliki makna filosofisnya masing-masing. Dari penelitian yang telah dilakukan ditemukan berbagai makna filosofis yang terkandung dalam batik Madura meliputi : religiusitas, pertanian, kelautan, hasil alam, kondisi alam, kegiatan masyarakat dan hewan serta tumbuhan yang ada di sekitar Madura. Warna dan motif batik tersebut menggambarkan dan merepresentasikan kondisi dan keadaan yang dapat dilihat di Pulau Madura. Sedangkan angkah-langkah diplomasi budaya yang dapat dilakukan oleh batik Madura tersebut  setidaknya memenuhi 3 prinsip , yaitu  Prinsip Penyebaran (Transmission),   Prinsip Penerimaan (Acceptance), dan prinsip  Koeksistensi (Coexistence).

Abstract

This research was carried out to find out the unity, coherence, and organization on cause-and-effect essay composed by the fourth semester students of Welding Engineering Study Program in Politeknik Perkapalan Negeri Surabaya. This study employed content analysis in which students’ essay writings were analyzed to gain the data. The population comprised four classes, each consisting of approximately 30 students. The sampling process involved randomly selecting 3 essays from each class, resulting in a total sample size of 12 essays. The findings showed that among 12 essays, 4 essays were unified, and 8 essays were less unified. The unified essays fulfilled the following criteria; (1) clear thesis statement, (2) topic sentences, (3) consistent support, (4) coherence and transition, and (5) concluding paragraph. In addition, among the 12 essays, 4 were categorized as coherent, 7 less coherent, and 1 incoherent. The coherent essays could accomplish the following criteria; (1) using consistent nouns and pronouns, (2) using proper transition signals, (3) organizing topic in a logical sequence, (4) having unity, and (5) using connectors for linking ideas and paragraph. Nevertheless, 11 out of 12 essays showed that they had good organization, which consisted of introduction, body, and conclusion. Therefore, it can be concluded that most of students are able to compose cause and effect essay in well organized even though students still need guidance to compose unified and coherent essay.
