Abstract

The objective of study is to explore the relationship between visual and verbal elements within the frame of multimodal discourse analysis in Madura tourism promotion. Promotion in the form of moving images with verbal language makes it easier for readers and potential tourists to see tourist attractions more closely and realistically. This study is descriptive qualitative using 3 videos of Madura tourism promotion, in particular tourism promotions of Bangkalan, Pamekasan, and Sampang regencies on Madura Island, Indonesia. Only scene representing religious tourism as the data of this study in which there are 8 data of religious tourism images. There are two parts of data analysis: visual and verbal analyses.  Visual semiotic mode of scenes and images were analyzed using visual grammar by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006).  In addition, verbal data are all of utterances generated during the scenes and the still images were analyzed based on appraisal framework by Martin and White (2005) especially on the attitude system.  Results show that tourism promotional videos use more than one mode of communication or semiotic system elements to create meaning through representational and interactive structures, compositional meanings, and verbal language.  All of the compositions can come together to create messages to the public, in this case information about tourist attractions and their locations that represent the religiosity of Madura.

Abstract

Languages in public spaces are one of the linguistic phenomena in society. This study examines the form of written language in public spaces in a particular religious tourism destination, namely Syaikhona Cholil mosque and Cemetery complex, in Bangkalan Regency, Madura, in terms of linguistic landscape (LL). This study examines the functions of each sign and its identity representation. The data are photographic evidence of language use in this area. There are several steps to collect data by identifying the LL, photographing LL to capture language issues in public spaces, classifying data based on their taxonomies, and classifying the use of language patterns, functions, and representations of identity. LL in this religious tourism destination is monolingual LL in which it only used Indonesian language, without using other languages, either ethnic language or foreign language. The functions of the LL are signs of information, signs of warning, appeal and prohibition, road signs, and building signs. The use of LL shows the identity as the unity Indonesian and the ownership or regulator of the destination. Although the place is in Madura, but there is no Madurese language used, Indonesian is the identity of the nation, which must be maintained and preserved. The use of LL in the area also shows the owner or the management team of the object that has the right to regulate its use.

Abstract

Bangkalan is one of the preferred tourist destinations in East Java because of its culture and culinary diversity. However, discussions about culinary are inseparable from culture. To raise public awareness of the cultural heritage richness of Bangkalan halal culinary, an analysis related to culture and culinary has to be carried on. This research aimed to analyze the semiotic and philosophical meaning of Bangkalan's halal culinary (Tajin Sobih, Nasi Serpang, and Topak Ladeh), which represents the cultural identity of Bangkalan people. This research is qualitative descriptive with a semiotic analysis approach of Charles Peirce's triadic model to analyze the visual composition of food. Data collection techniques used are observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out by processing signs and symbols in words into meaningful information. From the result analysis, it can be affirmed that each culinary has a variety of meanings that represent the value of community unity, prosperity, friendship, togetherness, and cultural heritage richness of Bangkalan people. The strengths of the three culinary arts are in the form of historical content, philosophical values, and religious beliefs so that they can foster public interest in visiting Bangkalan.
