Abstract

Mass media and its content on various platforms play a significant role in shaping knowledge in society, including the knowledge about sexuality. This article discusses news on LGBT on four Indonesian online media—Viva.co.id, Republika.co.id, Tempo.co.id, and Detik.com—by conducting quantitative content analysis. The result shows that the news on LGBT in 2020 centred on three main issues: the ban on gay individuals joining the army/police, the male rape case committed by Reynhard Sinaga, and male same-sex sexual intercourse in Wisma Atlet. The news structure on LGBT does not pay attention to the information depth, as indicated by the lack of paragraph numbers in the news and the lack of 5W+1H construction. In addition, the coverage is often one-sided, making it unbalanced. Eventually, the construct about LGBT becomes biased.

Abstract

The advancement of technology has made many people, including teenagers, use new media to access information and interact with other people. One of the new media platforms widely used by teenagers is social media. Because identity plays a significant role in the life of the youth, besides sexuality, social media is relevant to teenagers. Social media helps teenagers on their quest to define and explore who they are, one of which is by facilitating them to find idols. This research aims at illustrating the construction of idols in teenagers through the consumption of one of the social media platforms, Instagram, by employing a qualitative approach and case-study methods. The research result shows that social media consumption in suburban adolescents is low and makes them still have strong connections with the surrounding social environment. The low consumption and influence of social media also make it easy for teenagers to believe in their idol's appearance and perceive it as a complete image of the idol. Teenagers have many ways to find and 'meet' their idols. Teenagers believe in their idols' social media appearance and perceive that the contents show the natural character and personality of the idols.

Abstract

The transwomen group is a marginalized gender minority, excluded from various aspects of life, including politics, economics, society, and culture. This marginalization is further exacerbated by the fact that access to public services now requires an electronic ID card (e-KTP). To fulfill their civil rights, transpuan people must network and mobilize collectively. This study examines the communication efforts undertaken by the transpuan community in Yogyakarta to gain access to the e-KTP. The research was conducted through focus group discussions (FGDs) and interviews with members of the transpuan community in Yogyakarta (IWAYO). The findings indicate that vulnerable groups, such as transpuan communities, must establish cross-issue coalitions to create a collective communication network. This collective action becomes a source of strength for marginalized groups to achieve their goals. The community also engaged with government institutions, academics, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to advocate for the empowerment of community members and the fulfillment of their civil rights. Internally, IWAYO fostered communication using various strategies, including establishing sub-communities at nine community locations across Yogyakarta, holding social gatherings (arisan), organizing pesantren (group prayer), and conducting regular meetings.
