Abstract

The issue currently faced at SMP N 3 Kota Jambi is the low level of student integrity. This is evident from frequent violations such as tardiness, truancy, and disobedience to school rules. These behaviors indicate that efforts to strengthen students' integrity have not been fully implemented. This research aims to understand how integrity character is developed through Civics Education (PPKn) at SMP N 3 Kota Jambi, as well as to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors involved. The study was conducted using a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The results show that the development of integrity character through PPKn learning is progressing, although challenges remain. Values such as honesty, justice, and responsibility are being taught, but not all students consistently apply them. For example, cheating and unfair treatment among peers are still common. Teachers and school leaders serve as role models, but student consistency in adopting positive behavior needs improvement. While students’ social responsibility is fairly strong, academic responsibility remains an issue, with some students often late or failing to complete assignments. Therefore, a more consistent and collaborative effort between teachers, the school, and parents is needed so that the values of integrity are not only understood but also internalized and reflected in students' daily behavior.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to examine how character formation fosters nationalism among senior high school students in Davao City, Philippines. Specifically, it explores the integration of national values within the formal curriculum, the role of school rituals and symbolic practices, the influence of teacher modeling, and the development of student agency in a multicultural context. The research employed a qualitative multiple-case study design involving 33 participants, including 24 students, 6 teachers, and 3 school administrators. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, classroom observations, and document analysis, and were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that nationalism is fostered through the systematic integration of civic values in classroom instruction, reinforced by school rituals such as flag ceremonies and national commemorations. Teacher modeling and democratic classroom climate significantly influence students’ internalization of national values. Moreover, students demonstrate inclusive and critical forms of nationalism, particularly when engaged in participatory civic activities. However, challenges such as routine-based rituals and academic pressures may limit deeper reflection. The study concludes that effective character formation requires reflective pedagogy, inclusive practices, and meaningful civic engagement to cultivate responsible and participatory nationalism. It is recommended that schools strengthen dialogical teaching approaches and integrate experiential civic activities to enhance national identity formation.

Abstract

Group discussion is a communication method involving two or more individuals aimed at exchanging ideas, finding solutions, and deepening understanding of a particular topic. This research was motivated by the lack of students' Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) during group discussion activities. The study aims to identify the HOTS demonstrated by students in group discussions in Civic Education (PPKn) classes and to examine the role of PPKn teachers in facilitating the development of students' HOTS during the discussion process. This study employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological research design. The research data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Interviews were conducted with students, teachers, and the vice principal for student affairs. The findings revealed that not all students were able to demonstrate HOTS during group discussions. However, among the HOTS aspects of analyzing, evaluating, and creating, the analyzing aspect was the most dominant skill demonstrated by students. Students were able to analyze information and issues discussed, express opinions based on logical reasoning, and formulate ideas and solutions to the problems presented. Although not all students were capable of generating new and innovative ideas, group discussion activities can serve as an effective medium for developing students' Higher Order Thinking Skills.
