Abstract

It is important to deepen Akhlak teachings through seeing a figure of Ulama, who has a high integrity between knowledge and akhlak. Syekh Umar Ahmad Baradja is an Ulama who has a good character and he was very productive to make a lot of wiritings. Some of them are seperti Al-Akhlaq Lil Banin, kitab Al-Akhlaq Lil Banat, kitab Sullam Fiqih, kitab 17 Jauharah, dan kitab Ad’iyah Ramadhan. All of them were written in Arabic language, since 1950 were used as a main book in almost Islamic boarding school curriculumin Indonesia. He carved Indonesian Santri’s  character indirectly by his books. These books (Al-Akhlaq Lil Banin and kitab Al-Akhlaq Lil Banat) are as references for teachers in giving students external and internal education to control their attitude and behavior in daily life. Especially, when they are in public society and worship. The special things in his books are they made guidance about character (Akhlak) in two versions. One version is for boys and the other is for girls. The versions were made according to the needs of boys and girls to create a perfect character (Akhlak al-Karimah) to Allah and His creations. In the book also provided about some du’a (prayer text) and good actions, which had exemplified by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) based on Qur’an and Sunnah. Syekh Umar Ahmad Baradja had told that before we come into mystical world or spiritual, we should learn about Akhlak teachings comprehensively. Likewise, who does good actions in this world, he will get matchless happiness. There is a harmony relationship between theservant and his God. It is the meaning of ethics in Sufism performance. We can take the model from the fabulous figure, who was able to relieve someone’s thirst in his heart and gave a light to the way to Allah.

Abstract

Islam is the most perfect religion from other religions. It is called perfect because Islam is the complementary religion of the previous religions and its syari'at regulates all aspects of life, both those that are aqidah worship and Maliyah both horizontally and vertically and Islam is also rahmatan lilalamin. In the norm of maliyah, Islam regulates all forms of human behavior in dealing with others to meet the needs of life in the world. This includes the principles governing the market and mechanisms. In the realm of Islamic economic thought, there is a scholar, Ibn Taymiyyah, who has discussed a lot about economics, including his opinion on markets, prices, justice, economic principles and other economic thoughts. Every economic activity must contain an element of benefit and not abuse himself and others, so that economic activities can create welfare for the community evenly.

Abstract

Abstract

Despite these institutional advances, existing studies still focus heavily on formal, state-centered actors, leaving the role of community-based religious institutions largely understudied theoretically. This article addresses this gap by examining the role of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in Islamic economic development from the perspective of Islamic political economy and institutional governance. Through conceptual mapping, thematic analysis, and theoretical synthesis, the article reconceptualizes pesantren as non-state actors embedded in the moral, social, and political foundations of the Islamic economic system. The findings demonstrate that pesantren function not only as educational institutions but also as moral infrastructure capable of shaping economic preferences, legitimizing halal practices, and influencing community-based economic behavior. However, this study finds that the limited contribution of pesantren to formal Islamic economic development is not due to normative or theological deficiencies. Rather, it reflects structural constraints arising from weak institutional integration, fragmented governance, and a state-market bias in policy design. The dominance of market-oriented and technocratic approaches has marginalized Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) to a symbolic or instrumental role, resulting in a persistent gap between the ethical aspirations of Islamic economics and their institutional realization. This article contributes to the literature by developing a conceptual framework that positions Islamic boarding schools as intermediary institutions connecting values, markets, and public policy. It argues that the sustainability and inclusiveness of Islamic economic development in Indonesia depend on repositioning Islamic boarding schools within an inclusive governance architecture. Therefore, integrating Islamic boarding schools into halal governance, Islamic social finance, and economic policymaking is not only a policy option but also a structural and normative necessity to preserve the transformative ethos of Islamic economics.
