Abstract

The aim of the study was to investigate  the effect of daily intake of 100 grams tempe for four weeks on plasma glucose level in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study was a parallel randomized clinical trial. Subjects were 30 diabetic elderly living in four nursing homes in Jakarta. In the study subjects were assigned to two groups using block randomization. All subjects had to take diabetic regiment with calorie and macronutrient following diabetic recommendation diet. The treatment group (n=16) received tempe, while control group (n=14) received legumes other than tempe. Fasting plasma glucose level (FPG) was assessed before and after intervention. Unpaired t test and Mann Whitney were used to analyzed data with the 5% significance level. There were 27 subjects completed the study: 15 of treatment group and 12 of control group. Both group were comparable in age, gender, BMI, calorie and macronutrient intake before treatment. Fat, fiber, and isoflavone intake were significantly higher in treatment group compare to control group. Decrease in FPG after intervention were observed but were statisticaly insignificant. In conclusion daily intake of 100 grams tempe for four weeks did not decrease FPG.  Keywords: elderly, plasma glucose level, tempe, type 2 diabetes

Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia is an important risk factors of atherosclerosis. Bitter leaf is believed to have potency in decreasing plasma lipid. The aim of this study is to study the effect of bitter leaf ethanol extract in decreasing total cholesterol serum levels on hypercholesterolemic male Wistar rats. This is a true experimental laboratory study with complete randomized design. Antidyslipidemia effect was tested with HFF induction and Propiltiourasil 0,01% towards 30 rats which were divided into 6 groups: groups I as normal control (standard diet), groups II, III, and IV were given bitter leaf ethanol extract of 100 mg/kgBW, 200 mg/kgBW, and 400 mg/kgBW dose, group V as positive control group with Simvastatin, and group VI as negative with aquades. HFF  were given for 14 days then the study was continued for 14 days. The percentage data of the declining total cholesterol levels before and after treatments is analyzed with ANAVA, continued with LSD test. The result between group II, III, and IV with group VI shows a significant difference p<0,01. We concluded bitter leaf ethanol extract can decrease the level of total cholesterol serum of hypercholesterolmic Wistar rats.

Abstract

Growth in children is very important because it affects a person's height as an adult.Qualified and adequate nutrition play a significant role in growth. Adequate milk consumptioncan affect bone growth which ultimately affects height and helps reduce the risk of bone loss.The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between milk consumption andheight in children. This study is an analytic observational study, involving 126 subjects aged 6-9 years from an elementary school in Bandung. The sample was taken by whole samplingtechnique. Data collection was carried out using questionnaires and height measurements. Thedata was analyzed using the Gamma correlation test. The statistical results showed a significantrelationship between the frequency of milk consumption and height (p = 0.044) with a mediumcorrelation coefficient (r = 0.430) and a positive correlation direction which meant an increasein the frequency of milk consumption along with the increasing height in children aged 6-9years. We concluded that milk consumption correlates with body height in children.Keywords: milk consumption, body height, children, correlation

Abstract

ABSTRACTDuring the outbreak of Covid-19, the policy of working from home for employees and studying from home for students create a new problem. Employees and students mostly have to sit for long periods of time. This can affect body posture leading to lower back pain. Scoliosis is a postural disorder consistingof lateral curvature and rotation of the vertebrae. The etiology of idiopathic scoliosis remains unknown, and still present as theoretical hypothesis’s experts. One of non-surgical treatment that has been used for mild to moderate scoliosis is flexibility exercises. Flexibility exercises have been reported to reducethe degree of curvature in idiopathic scoliosis through the muscle hypertrophy mechanism. Muscle hypetrophy is regulated by Yes-associated protein (Yap) and transcriptional co-activator with PDZbinding motif protein (Taz) through three pathways, such as Hippo pathway signal, mechanosensorresponse, and mTOR signaling. The aim of this review is to examine more deeply the effect of Yap Taz protein on flexibility exercises in idiopathic scoliosis patien ts.Keywords: flexibility, hypertrophy, scoliosis, Taz, Yap.
