Abstract

One of the signs of periodontitis is the occurrence of infrabony defects. Chitosan is a natural-based polymer hydrogel that has bio-degradability, biocompatibility, bacteriostatic, non-toxic properties and has haemostatic and mucoadhesive capacities that are very beneficial in the periodontal regenerative process in periodontitis patients with infrabony defects. This systematic review dis-cusses the effectiveness of local application of chitosan hydrogels as periodontal regenerative therapy through PubMed and Google Scholar online literature databases limited to human randomised control clinical studies, published in the last eight years, on periodontal probing depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL). The initial search yielded 385 abstracts, 4 studies met the inclusion criteria that addressed the effectiveness of chitosan-based natural hydrogels on periodontal regenerative in periodon-titis patients with infrabony defects using open flap debridement (OFD)+chitosan (Cs), OFD+low molecular chitosan, OFD+high molecular chitosan, OFD+chitosan+fucoidan, OFD+chitosan+bonegraft surgical procedures. All studies showed improved of PPD and CAL within six months post-baseline. It was concluded that all procedures were effective in reducing PPD and increasing CAL. The use of chitosan can be considered an important material for periodontal regenerative therapy in periodontitis patients with infrabony defects.

Abstract

To describe the effectiveness of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as host modulation on the healing of periodon-titis based on existing literature. The literature search was conducted independently, including articles in PubMed with full text and written in English using the keywords periodontal disease AND periodontitis AND host modulation AND nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs OR NSAIDs. As a result, periodontitis is no longer defined as a disease caused by bacteria alone, but is now seen as an uncontrolled disease related to the immune response caused by dysbiosis. NSAIDs are one of the host mo-dulation agents that have been investigated for their effectiveness in healing periodontal disease. Some articles support that the combination of NSAIDs and scaling root planing (SRP) can treat periodontitis, but there is some literature that states that this is not the case when compared to conventional treatments. It was concluded that NSAIDs are effective as host modulation for periodontitis healing significantly on clinical parameter measurements such as plaque index reduction, probing depth, bleeding on probing, gingival index, and clinical attachment level improvement compared to SRP combined with placebo.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the profile of periodontal disease in patients with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and asthma at RSGMP Hasanuddin University in 2023-2024. The type of research used is quantitative research with descriptive re-search design with cross-sectional study design. The study was conducted on periodontal disease patients suffering from DM, hypertension, and asthma who came to RSGMP Unhas in 2023. The results of the study found 2048 patients with periodontal disease at RSGMP Unhas in 2023. Female gender was found to be more common, namely 1319 patients (54.78%) and male patients as many as 1089 (45.22%). The frequency distribution of periodontal disease accompanied by DM, male sex as many as 8 (5%) patients and female 8 (5%) patients, for the distribution of hypertension in female patients found as many as 17 people (47.22%) while in male patients found as many as 19 people (52.77%). Asthma patients, male gender as many as 1 patient (0.25%) and female 3 patients (0.75%). Conclusion The frequency distribution of periodontal disease accompanied by DM and hypertension most often found chronic periodontitis. And for asthma patients, periodontal diseases found were chronic periodontitis, gingival enlargement, irreversible pulpitis and apical abscess.
