Abstract

This research was conducted to develop a communicative supplementary speaking e-book for the English teachers in SMPN 3 Batu. This product provides the communicative speaking materials with communicative tasks to be applied in teaching learning process. The research design of this research is research and development (R & D) that has been modified from Borg and Gall (1983). The instruments used to collect the data for the needs analysis were interview with the teachers and a questionnaire for the students,  about the current materials. Then the data from the needs analysis used a developing a communicative speaking material product. After that, the product needs to be validated by three experts using validation checklist as the instrument in the expert validation. This product was design for the 8th graders of junior high school, academic year 2013/2014, in SMPN 3 Batu. Twenty students from nine classes that were selected by the teachers were chosen as the subjects of the research. Then the instruments used in try-out were an observation checklist for the students’ speaking activity, questionnaire for the students about the try-out material, and observation checklist for the teachers about the try-out material.This e-book contains communicative and interactive speaking materials and tasks to help the teachers’ improve the the students’ confidance using English in various communication situations, both formal and informal. This e-book is also equipped with a manual to help the teachers and the students.  It revealed that the result of the try-out from the instruments used in this step was very good which means that the developed product did not need any revision.

Abstract

Introducing English to children aged 0-12 years as a foreign language is very important considering that they are in the "Golden Period", a time when their brains quickly absorb the language they have acquired. This is useful for preparing them to face global competition considering that English is an international language. Community service in Segoromadu village, Gresik district aims to teach vocabulary (names of animals found in the surrounding environment) using the learning media "Vocabulary Cards" to 10 children aged 6-8 years in Segoromadu. Activity methods include demonstrations and assistance to children for 6-8 year. In this activity, they were taught various kinds of vocabulary about animals and fruit in the surrounding environment through games using the learning media "Vocabulary Cards". The results of this community service activity show that the students were very enthusiastic about participating in the learning process, they felt happy and their vocabulary about animals and fruit in the surrounding environment increased.

Abstract

TOEFL Training and Tests were held as a contribution to the "Seru Library" activities at the District Library and Archives Office. Gresik, where this activity is based on the fact that we want to introduce TOEFL to high school students of the same level. "Perpus Seru" is an activity held by the Gresik Regency Library and Archives Service where the event presented is by bringing in volunteer resource persons who want to share their knowledge with the public. Class XII of Senior High School students is the target of this activity. The students are able to gain some advantages from the literacy class because TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) will be used as one of the graduation requirements from university. The methods of this community service activity are lectures, discussions and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exercises. After participating in this activity, literacy class participants are expected to: 1) know about TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language); 2) be able to understand various questions in TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language); 3) be able to understand various tips and tricks for taking the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language); and 4) be able to do TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).

Abstract

This study aims to improve vocabulary mastery by using the snowball throwing technique on seventh-grade students at MTs. Mambaul Ulum Lamongan in the 2021/2022 academic year. Considering that many students find it difficult to master vocabulary, this study focuses on the use of the snowball throwing technique, which can help students improve their vocabulary mastery. The research design is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The research subjects are 21 seventh-grade students at MTs. Mambaul Ulum Lamongan during the 2018/2019 academic year. The results of this study indicate that in Cycle I, only 48% (10 students from the class) were able to achieve the success criteria, while 11 or approximately 52% of students did not meet the success criteria. Unlike Cycle I, the average score in Cycle II was quite satisfactory, with scores greater than or equal to 76, increasing to 76.19% (16 students in the class) who were able to meet the success criteria, and 5 or approximately 24% of students who did not meet the success criteria. Based on the results of student observations and post-tests, the improvement was quite significant. The application of the snowball throwing technique clearly helped students in achieving vocabulary. Finally, the author suggests that teachers apply the snowball throwing technique. Considering that the snowball throwing technique is a technique for solving problems in vocabulary mastery. By using various techniques in teaching English, especially in vocabulary mastery, students will enjoy learning more and automatically improve their vocabulary mastery.
