Abstract

Poor oral and dental hygiene can cause plaque to build up on the surface of the teeth. Plaque buildup that is not cleaned will harden and disrupt the condition of the gingiva, resulting in inflammation of the gingiva. The aim of this research was to determine the relationship between dental and oral hygiene and gingival conditions in students at SMP Negeri 2 Baso, Agam Regency. This research uses analytical methods. Research subjects were taken using a saturated sampling technique. Data collection was carried out by examining the Plaque Index (IP) and Gingival Index (GI), with data analysis using the "Spearman correlation" statistical test. The results of the study showed that there was a significant relationship between dental and oral hygiene and gingival conditions. The results of the "Spearman correlation" statistical test obtained a p-value of 0.0180.05. Most students had a Plaque Index with moderate criteria and mild inflammation criteria. It is recommended that students pay more attention to oral and dental hygiene, such as brushing their teeth twice a day, namely in the morning after breakfast and at night before bed, consuming fruit and vegetables, gargling with antiseptic and using dental floss or dental floss so that the condition of the gingiva is well maintained so that they can prevent inflammation of the gingiva.

Abstract

Differences in environmental conditions, access to health services, and oral health maintenance behavior are thought to influence dental caries among school-age children, particularly in the first permanent molars. This study aimed to analyze the differences in first permanent molar caries and DMF-T index among sixth-grade elementary school students in urban and rural areas. This study was an analytic study with a cross sectional approach conducted at SDN 06 Aur Tajungkang Tengah Sawah, Bukittinggi City, and SDN 22 Koto Tangah, Agam Regency. The sample consisted of 50 students selected using the total sampling technique. Data were collected through examinations of first permanent molar caries depth and DMF-T index. Data analysis was performed using the Mann Whitney U Test. The results showed that superficial caries were more common among students in urban areas, while profunda caries were more common among students in rural areas. The mean DMF-T index in urban students was higher (3.97) than in rural students (1.86). Statistical analysis showed significant differences in superficial caries (p=0.001), profunda caries (p=0.023), and total DMF-T index (p=0.040), while media caries, missing component, and filling component showed no significant differences. In conclusion, there were differences in the pattern of first permanent molar caries and DMF-T index between elementary school students in urban and rural areas. Promotive and preventive oral health efforts tailored to regional characteristics are needed through oral health education and regular dental examinations at schools.

Abstract

Dental caries is a disease affecting the hard tissues of teeth, impacting overall health. Brushing teeth is a crucial effort to reduce the growth of caries-causing bacteria. This study aims to analyze the relationship between tooth brushing frequency and caries status among students at SMP Negeri 1 Batipuh, Tanah Datar. A descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted in January 2023, involving 186 students as the population through saturated sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire on tooth brushing frequency and DMF-T examination for caries status. Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate methods. Results indicate that 23% of students brushed their teeth once a day, 62% twice a day, and 15% three times a day. Regarding caries status, 64% had good criteria while 36% had poor criteria. Analysis revealed that students who brushed once daily had 2% with good status and 21% with poor status; those brushing twice daily had 48% good and 14% poor; and those brushing three times daily had 14% good and 1% poor. The conclusion of this study is that the most common brushing frequency is twice a day, and students with this frequency tend to have better caries status.
