Abstract

This research aims to describe what translation techniques translators use in translating translated texts and to find out what translation techniques are most dominantly used. The data in this research are words, phrases, clauses, or sentences from the French short story text Le Loup Garou and Icare and their translations in an anthology of translated short stories entitled Negeri Tak Berbunga by French Language Education students at Uinversitas Negeri Semarang batch 2016. Data was collected using the listening method, which was then followed by the note-taking method. For data analysis, the researcher used the matching method or continued using the technique of selecting certain elements or Pilah UnsurTertentu (PUP). It means that the researcher used his abilities to analyze the data. From the 18 translation techniques revealed by Molina & Albir (2002: 498-512), translators used 15 of them in translating the texts of Le Loup Garou and Icare. The dominant translation used by translators is literal (66.83%). The 15 translation techniques used are adaptation, borrowing, calculation, compensation, discursive creation, generalization, linguistic amplification, linguistic compression, literal translation, modulation, particularization, reduction, substitution, transposition, and variation.

Abstract

Semantics is one of the scientific fields of linguistics that studies meaning. There are several types of meaning, one of which is idiomatic meaning. The idiom is a combination of words whose meaning cannot be deduced from the elements that compose them, but rather from the entire expression. This research aims to describe the form and meaning of French idioms used in animal elements in Les Expressions Idiomatiques by Isabelle Chollet and Jean-Michel Robert. This research is qualitative descriptive research. Data were collected using the technique of careful reading and registration. The methods used to analyze the form and meaning of idioms are the equivalent method and the distribution method. The results of this research show that there are one hundred and fifty-five French idioms that use animal elements at the phrase level that have three forms, the three forms are the verbal group, the nominal group, and the adjectival group. All data were analyzed using literal and figurative meaning. Literal meaning is the basic meaning of a word and figurative meaning is the meaning of a word those changes. It is because the word has previously concrete characteristics turned into abstract.

Abstract

This article examines modality as the realization of interpersonal meaning in Instagram content posted on the account dr.fitrihartanto_spak, which focuses on child health and development. The study aims to identify the types of modality used by Dr. dr. Fitri Hartanto, Sp.A(K) in the content entitled “Rahasia Anak Gak Speech Delay!” (“The Secret to Preventing Speech Delay in Children”) and to reveal the speaker’s position in constructing interpersonal relationships with the audience. The data consist of utterances delivered by Dr. dr. Fitri Hartanto to the followers of the Instagram account. The analysis employs the Systemic Functional Linguistics approach, particularly the modality system, which reflects the speaker’s attitude, confidence, and authority toward the conveyed information. The findings indicate that the dominant modalities are high-probability modalization and high-obligation modulation. The use of high-probability modalization demonstrates a strong degree of confidence in the information presented, while high-obligation modulation emphasizes actions that parents should or must undertake to support their children’s language development. These findings suggest that Dr. dr. Fitri Hartanto occupies a higher authority position than the audience, resulting in a non-equal interpersonal relationship in which the speaker is positioned as a trusted source of knowledge and expertise.

Abstract

The research data were collected using observation and note-taking techniques, while the data analysis was conducted using equivalence methods. The findings of this study indicate violations of the maxims of quality, quantity, relevance, and manner. The aim of this research is to make theoretical contributions to the deve lopment of pragmatic studies, particularly regarding the cooperative principle and maxim violations in film dialogues, as well as the creation of humour, conflict, and character development in the characters. In addition, this research is also expected to serve as a reference and consideration for future research discussing similar topics.
