Abstract

Self-confidence is a critical determinant of elementary students’ learning success, particularly within culture-based contexts such as Sundrang in Bugis communities. However, many students exhibit low confidence in expressing opinions, participating in discussions, and engaging in classroom interactions. Although assertive training is known to enhance communication and confidence, its integration into local cultural learning remains underexplored. This study employed a quantitative quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design. Sixty fifth-grade students from Bugis elementary schools were assigned to an experimental group (n = 30) and a control group (n = 30). The experimental group received assertive training integrated into Sundrang learning, while the control group followed conventional instruction. Data were collected using a validated and reliable Likert-scale self-confidence questionnaire and analyzed through normality, homogeneity, and independent-samples t-tests.The findings revealed a statistically significant improvement in self-confidence among students in the experimental group compared to the control group. Students exposed to assertive training demonstrated greater gains in public speaking, social interaction, and the ability to express opinions during Sundrang learning activities. The results indicate that integrating assertive training into culture-based learning effectively enhances students’ self-confidence. This approach supports not only communication skills but also active participation in culturally relevant educational settings. Accordingly, incorporating assertive training into elementary curricula, particularly in local cultural learning contexts, is recommended to foster students’ social competence and overall confidence.

Abstract

Religious moderation is a crucial approach in maintaining social harmony amid religious and cultural diversity in Indonesia, but its implementation still faces serious challenges in the form of intolerance and radicalism. This article examines the relevance of Ibn Miskawaih's concept of the middle path (al-ikhtiyar al-awsat) in the book Tahdhib al-Akhlaq as an ethical foundation for strengthening this moderation, while also proposing a “Curriculum of Love” as a transformative pedagogical approach. The thoughts of emphasizes that moral virtue lies in the balance between two extremes and the purification of the soul (tahdhib al-nafs), which in the context of Islamic education in Indonesia, these values can be integrated through a character-based curriculum to shape an inclusive attitude towards religion. This article argues that the integration of the values of compassion (mahabbah) and moral balance is essential to address the challenge of intolerance, where the “Curriculum of Love” serves as an instrument to internalize religious moderation through an affective approach that goes beyond mere textual understanding. Through a literature review, this study concludes that the synergy between Ibn Miskawaih's middle path ethics and the Curriculum of Love can encourage the creation of “Active Tolerance” and stronger social cohesion, enabling educational institutions to produce a generation that is not only intellectually intelligent but also highly empathetic towards diversity.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the existence of regional autonomy, which provides opportunities for local governments to contribute to the management of Islamic Religious Education (IRE), although the primary authority over religious education remains under the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Kubu Raya Regency, as a region characterized by a religious society, possesses significant potential for developing IRE policies that are responsive to local needs. This study aims to analyze the implementation of IRE policies within the framework of regional autonomy, identify supporting and inhibiting factors, and formulate strategies for strengthening IRE policies in Kubu Raya Regency. The research employed a qualitative approach using a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis, and were analyzed using an interactive model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the implementation of IRE policies has been carried out relatively well through synergy among schools, communities, local governments, and the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Supporting factors include a religious social environment, teachers’ commitment, and support from schools and local governments. Meanwhile, the challenges encountered include limited human resources, suboptimal inter-institutional coordination, and inadequate facilities and infrastructure. The study implies the importance of strengthening institutional synergy, enhancing teacher competence, developing local wisdom-based programs, and promoting innovative learning approaches to improve the quality of IRE sustainably.
