Abstract

Betara Areca nut (Areca catechu Var. Betara) is a superior variety of areca nut in West Tanjung Jabung District, Jambi Province, which is marketed in various local markets in the province and exported to various countries, such as India and Pakistan. Most people in this area own an areca nut farming business and it is the main source of income for farming households compared to activities in fields other than areca nut farming. However, in running this business, farmers experience obstacles, one of which is the lack of continuity in betel nut production. There are times when areca nut trees are less fruitful and even some areca nuts stop bearing fruit. This is due to farmers' lack of knowledge of the ethylene hormone. While the source for the production of ethylene hormone is in their own environment. Utilization of this natural ethylene hormone can stimulate and increase areca nut fruit. In addition, the fruit ripening process will be faster if using this natural ethylene hormone. The potential of areca nut waste such as fronds, leaves, and coir as a source of natural ethylene is not utilized by the community. This is due to the lack of knowledge possessed by the community. Community Service activities in the Integrated Laboratory Village have been carried out, with the stages of socialization of the use of ethylene hormones from areca nut waste. The activity was attended by the head of the RT, several residents and students involved in Merdeka Learning Campus Merdeka (MBKM). Socialization has been conducted using the lecture method and opening up opportunities for the community to ask questions

Abstract

Indonesia is known as one of the countries with the highest biodiversity in the world, including in the Poaceae family or grasses that have important ecological and economic values. This study aimed to determine the kinship of five species from the Poaceae family based on morphological characters. The species observed include Cenchrus longispinus, Paspalum plicatum, Imperata cylindrica, Setaria parviflora, and Eleusine indica. The study was conducted quantitatively with a descriptive approach, through direct observation of morphological characters such as roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds. Data were analyzed using a similarity index and visualized in the form of a dendogram. The results show that the five species have many morphological similarities, especially in root type, stem shape, growth direction, and flower type. The species with the closest kinship are Eleusine indica with Paspalum plicatum, and Cenchrus longispinus with Setaria parviflora. Meanwhile, the most distant relationship was found between Imperata cylindrica with Cenchrus longispinus and Setaria parviflora. PCA analysis was also used to identify the most influential morphological characters in distinguishing species. The results of this study provide an initial overview of the taxonomic relationships in the Poaceae family and the importance of morphological characters in plant systematics studies.

Abstract

Calamus acehensis (Rustiami), known as Aceh jernang rattan, is an endemic plant with high economic value in Aceh Province. This jernang produces red resin from its fruit which is used as a natural dye for rattan handicrafts as well as in traditional medicine, such as wound medicine, headaches, and post-natal pilis. The advantage of C. acehensis over other jernang species lies in its rapid growth and high resin production at a young age. At the age of two years, the plant has reached a height of two meters and started to bear fruit. Distinctive morphological features include stem internodes up to 50 cm, leaves up to 2 meters long, petioles 35 cm long, and black leaf sheaths with long and dense spines. This study aims to assess pollen morphology to determine its pollination system and taxonomic status. Pollen samples were taken from C. acehensis growing in Rieseh Tengoh Village, Aceh and from cultivation in Jambi. Analysis was conducted using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) at the UGM Integrated Research and Testing Laboratory. Results showed that both samples had small pollen size, 1.212 µm (Aceh) and 1.116 µm (Jambi), with a single monocolpate aperture shape and flat exine ornamentation. These characteristics indicate the potential for wind-assisted cross-pollination (xenogamy) (anemogamy), providing important insights for the conservation and cultivation of Acehnese jernang.
