Abstract

The threat of a megathrust earthquake in the seismic gap zone of the southern coast of Java demands the strengthening of risk communication that is easily understood, accessible, and remembered by the lay public, including the coastal community of Karangpakis Village, Cilacap Regency. This article aims to develop and present Micro-Documentary Learning (MDL), a conceptual framework for developing short-duration documentary videos that integrate the principles of microlearning, Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, and Disaster Risk Communication for disaster education in coastal communities. The activity was carried out through eight stages: need assessment, risk communication analysis, microlearning design, script development, documentary production, post-production, community dissemination, and reflection, conducted in collaboration with the Tourism Awareness Group (POKDARWIS) of Singkil Indah Beach, Karangpakis Village. The results indicate that MDL is capable of condensing complex disaster materials into short viewing units with a single clear learning objective, integrated with local narratives such as biogas potential and MSME activities, thereby making mitigation messages more acceptable without causing excessive panic. MDL is positioned as a conceptual framework bridging seismic studies, multimedia learning sciences, and disaster risk communication practices, with the potential for replication in other coastal villages facing similar threats. The main contribution of this article is the introduction of MDL as a media development framework that can be utilized by community service institutions, village governments, and community groups to design contextual and sustainable disaster education videos.
