Abstract

Copyright (c) 2016 by KARSA. All right reserved DOI: 10.19105/karsa. karsa.v24i2.913

Abstract

[Although there are several groups who want a caliphate system, HT/HTI has their own interpretation of the verses of the Koran which they believe are the obligation to uphold the caliphate. The method used in this research is library research using qualitative research procedures. The results of the study can be concluded: First, the verses of the Koran interpreted by HTI and its figures are believed to be the obligation to uphold the caliphate, including QS. Al-Maidah: 48-49, QS. An-Nur: 55, QS. An-Nisa: 59, QS. Al-Baqarah: 30. Those who wish to establish a caliphate think that the system of government in Indonesia is a system of kufr. So that it is necessary to change the Islamic system with the implementation of sharia law which can only be reached by enforcing the caliphate system. Second, regarding HTI's interpretation of these verses, which he believes to be the argument for the obligation to uphold the caliphate, it has drawn criticism and controversy among the Indonesian people, especially among the NU, Muhammadiyah and nationalist figures. According to the cons, the obligation of the caliphate system to be based on the verses of the Qur'an is a compelling interpretation because the Qur'an never mentions how the system of government should be. The interpretation of HTI among those who oppose it is considered odd and it is felt that its ideas endanger the integrity of the state ideology. Third, according to those who are pro-khilafah, it has good implications for political conditions in Indonesia. Khilafah as the needs of the people so it is right to be enforced. According to the cons, on the contrary, the caliphate does not have good implications or impacts for politics in Indonesia because it is not in accordance with the conditions of the Indonesian people, so it is not appropriate if it is enforced.]

The rise of hate speech, extremism, radicalism, and the deterioration of interfaith relations has become a prevalent issue within communities, especially in online media. Given the potential for this to cause division, it is crucial to approach the issue with moderation. This research focuses on exploring how the Nahdlatul Ulama Organization presents religious moderation on the NU Online website to promote values of goodness and demonstrate tolerance. The study used qualitative research methods and a virtual ethnography approach to analyze virtual texts and online media records. Data collection centered on selecting content related to religious moderation on NU Online media, and the analysis involved data reduction, display, and drawing conclusions. The research revealed that NU Online's moderate da'wah entails: Narrative of religious moderation as an option to gain Islamic insights, creating a virtual space to promote a calming religious spirit and present Islam as a universal religion ‘raḥmatan lil ālamīn’, and kindly promoting moderate Islam amidst the rapid influx of information in the media disruption era.

Abstract

This study investigates the metaphors of happiness employed by santri in Indonesian Islamic Islamic boarding schools (Islamic boarding school) and examines how these metaphors reflect their emotional, social, and spiritual experiences. Utilizing a qualitative approach through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and conceptual metaphor analysis, this research reveals that happiness is often metaphorized through spiritual imagery, such as “happiness is peace of mind” and “happiness is knowing God (ma‘rifatullāh).”These expressions illustrate how santri conceptualize happiness as intertwined with religious devotion, communal worship, and moral discipline. The santri's frame of mind, which varies from the expression of daily happiness, can also be influenced by the social and cultural context of the Islamic boarding school. In addition, the metaphor of happiness also plays an important role in shaping santri self-identity, strengthening collective ethics, internalizing religious values. This finding confirms that metaphor is not only a means of communication, but also a medium for conflicting meanings and social realities. The research contributes conceptually by applying metaphor theory within a traditional Islamic educational context and methodologically by highlighting local religious narratives in the study of language and emotion. These findings offer new directions for exploring the nexus of affect, spirituality, and discourse in Muslim minority and majority settings.

Abstract

Marriage postponement (waithood) among educated Muslim women in Indonesia has increasingly challenged conventional understandings of marital readiness rooted in biological maturity and domestic competence. This study aims to examine how Muslim undergraduate women in Jember reconstruct the concept of Istiṭā’ah al-nikāḥ within the socio-religious pressures of Pandalungan culture and pesantren traditions. Existing studies largely interpret Istiṭā’ah through material and legal dimensions, while limited attention has been given to women’s reflective experiences in redefining marital readiness through intellectual and psychological capacities. This research employed a qualitative phenomenological approach using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Data were collected through in-depth interviews and participant observation involving ten Muslim female undergraduate students aged 20–25 in Jember, and analysed using a contemporary Maqāṣid al-sharī’ah framework. The findings revealed a process of deconstruction toward traditional standards of marriage based on chronological age and domestic readiness, followed by the reconstruction of Istiṭā’ah as holistic preparedness grounded in intellectual sovereignty, emotional maturity, and reflective responsibility. Waithood was interpreted as an ethical and preventive strategy (sadd al-dharī’ah) to safeguard the intellect (ḥifẓ al-‘aql) and self (ḥifẓ al-nafs) before entering the mīthāqan ghalīẓā. This study demonstrates that modernity within the Pandalungan-pesantren context generates a reflective negotiation between religious commitment, women’s autonomy, and substantive marital readiness.

Abstract

Although pesantren poetry occupies a distinctive place within Indonesian Islamic literary tradition, it remains largely overlooked in semiotic scholarship. The poem Yā Nahḍat al-ʿUlamāʾ, composed by KH. Fuad Hasyim, as a devotional expression of Nahdlatul Ulama's religious identity, has received no sustained academic attention whatsoever in this context. This study fills that gap by examining how the poem constructs ideological meaning through Riffaterre's semiotic framework. Using a descriptive-qualitative approach, the analysis proceeds through heuristic and hermeneutic readings, identifies mechanisms of indirect expression, and reconstructs the poem's semiotic structures across its fifteen stanzas. The poem derives from a single matrix, Nahdlatul Ulama, as a source of light, protection, and supplication. This proposition is never stated outright but realized through imagery that moves steadily from the personal toward the cosmic and collective. Displacement and distortion draw on the conventions of the ghazal and the madāḥ qaṣīdah to legitimize institutional devotion, while recurring vocative formulas accumulate a performative weight comparable to dhikr. These findings demonstrate that ideological meaning in religious poetry operates through linguistic architecture rather than through explicit doctrinal statement. The study offers a replicable semiotic methodology for analyzing pesantren literature, and it illuminates how contemporary Indonesian Islamic organizations draw on poetic tradition to construct, reinforce, and sustain collective ideological identity. These findings also open productive directions for future research into the intersection of literary form, religious practice, and ideological production in Muslim societies more broadly.
