Abstract

Abstract Indonesia is the third largest cocoa producing country after Ivory Coast and Ghana. Indonesian cocoa agribusiness still faces obstacles, among others, the low quality of cocoa beans caused by different types of cocoa plant varieties. The amount of phenolic compounds in cocoa depends on the variety. There are 3 variety of cocoa plants, namely Criollo (fine flavoured cocoa) Forestero (bulk cocoa) and Trinitario (Criollo and Forestero hybrids). This study aims to identify cocoa varieties quickly and efficiently to control the quality of cocoa bean production. The method used in this study is a combination of Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy Method and Multivariate Analysis Method. The combination of these two methods has been widely developed for the identification and authentication of types of plants that have similar or close ties. Based on the results of FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) analysis at a wave number of 4000-400 cm-1 to 15 samples of cocoa beans, a spectrum that is multicomponent and relatively the same is obtained. The spectrum data is processed by the multivariate analysis method, Principle Component Analysis (PCA) and obtained that the 3 variety of cocoa can be clearly distinguished where the value of the main components (PC-1 and PC-2) is 92.03%.

Abstract

Background: Kidney stones are one of the causes of chronic and acute kidney failure symptoms. The flavonoid compounds in Chromolaena odorata leave extract are thought to dissolve calcium in kidney stones.  Objective: This study aims to determine the activity of Chromolaena odorata leaves extract as a laxative for calcium kidney stones and to characterize the active extract with a liquid chromatograph mass spectrometry. Methods: The leaves of Chromolaena odorata were extracted by ultrasonication method using 3 solvents in stages, namely n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol. The powder for kidney stones was immersed in an extract solution of n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol for 5 hours at 37° C. The reaction results were analyzed for their absorbance using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The fraction with the best activity was analyzed for phytochemical content with various typical reagents and LCMS. Results: Methanol extract of Chromolaena odorata has a better effect in dissolving calcium kidney stones. Methanol extract of Chromolaena odorata can reduce calcium in kidney stones with an EC50 value of 16801 µg/mL. Based on phytochemical tests and LCMS analysis, the methanol extract of Chromolaena odorata leaves contains compounds of the tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, and steroids. Chromatogram at a retention time of 7.76; 8.96; and 10.01 in the methanol extract of Chromolaena odorata identified 3,5,7,4'-tetrahydroxy-8,3'-dimethoxyflavone; 5,7,4'-trihydroxy-3',5'-dimethoxyflavone, and 5,6,7,8,4'-pentamethoxyflavone compounds. Conclusion: Methanol extract had the best calcium decay activity in kidney stones with an EC50 value of 16801 µg/mL. 3,5,7,4'-tetrahydroxy-8,3'-dimethoxyflavone; 5,7,4'-trihydroxy-3',5'-dimethoxyflavone, and 5,6,7,8,4'-pentamethoxyflavone compounds are contained in methanol extract which is thought to play a role in shedding calcium in kidney stones.

Abstract

Cancer is the second non-communicable disease that causes the largest number of deaths after cardiovascular disease. The chemical compounds contained in the Khaya anthotheca plant and which have anticancer activity include methyl angolensate, 7-deacetylhivorin, grandifolione, gedunin, , obacunone and Cathecin. This research aims to determine the standardization of extracts and determine anticancer activity against MCF-7 breast cancer cells. The method used in this research is standardization of specific and non-specific parameters, and cytotoxic testing using Prestoblue. The results of extract standardization of specific parameters have values ​​for soluble essence in water and ethanol of 4.68% and 5.80% (meeting the requirements). Non-specific parameters drying loss 0.739%, ash content 8.02%, microbial contamination 0 colonies, lead (Pb) 0.2976 mg/kg, cadmium (Cd) ≤0.001 mg/kg (qualified) and IC₅₀ value of anticancer activity breast MCF-7 from Khaya anthoteca extract was 194.20 µg/mL in the medium/moderate category

Abstract

This study was designed to examine the α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of triglycerides and methyl linoleate isolated from the root extract of Murraya koenigii Spreng in Malaysia. Although M. koenigii has been widely reported for its medicinal properties, few studies have examined the α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of its isolated lipid compounds, particularly triglycerides and methyl linoleate. The chemical compounds were obtained by cold extraction with various solvents and purified by chromatographic techniques, including NMR, MS, and IR analyses. Antidiabetic activity was evaluated using an α-glucosidase inhibitory assay. The results of these studies indicated that triglyceride (1) (IC50 = 33.6 ± 0.05 µg/mL) from the hexane crude extract and methyl linoleate (2) (IC50 = 13.9 ± 0.19 µg/mL) from the methanol crude extract exhibited potent inhibitory activity in the α-glucosidase inhibitory assay. The results showed that root extracts of M. koenigii exhibit significant antidiabetic activity, which may help identify new chemical classes of natural antidiabetic substances.
