Abstract

ABSTRACT: This paper analyzed the CRs (Compliment Responses) performed by Indonesian lecturers of English at the English Department UNIBRAW (University of Brawijaya) in Malang City, East Java, Indonesia, when interacting with their colleagues in the workplace based on sex differences. This research used qualitative approach to analyze the compliment responses performed by the lecturers. The compliment responses were analyzed based on Robert K. Herbert (1986)’s theory. It was shown that the responses given are various. The lecturers are most likely to accept compliments by appreciation token, both in verbal and non-verbal responses. Moreover, most of the responses are combination of two or more types of CRs. In relation to gender, male and female participants give similar responses, yet male tend to use question preceding or following the responses, while female tend to use comment avoidance. Regarding the L2 (Second Language) competence, this study found out that the lecturers still retain their L1 (First Language) culture in appreciating a compliment, regardless their competence in English, both linguistically and culturally. In conclusion, the variety of compliment responses given by lecturers of English at the English Department UNIBRAW might be caused by their habit of expressing themselves freely without too strictly bound to the norm in which they are related. Complimenting events for them can be used as media to create feeling of solidarity.KEY WORD: Compliment Responses; Indonesian Lecturers; English; Gender; Culture. About the Authors: Yana Shanti Manipuspika, M.Appl.Ling. and Emy Sudarwati, M.Pd. are the Lecturers at the Study Program of English Literature, Department of Language and Literature FIB UNIBRAW (Faculty of Humanities, Brawijaya University), Jalan Veteran, Malang City 65145, East Java, Indonesia. Abstract

Abstract: This paper tried to show how conversational coherence is achieved within talk shows, what strategies used by both host and interviewee to achieve coherence collaboratively. It was shown that in both English and Indonesian talk shows, conversational activity of asking questions can be employed to measure a coherence of a stretch of conversation. Question-answer adjacency pairs can provide the framework through which coherence is achieved, and they have two possibilities to be agreed or disagreed with. This is clear from the English talk show instead of the Indonesian one. The way speakers taking turn and the occurrence of overlap within the sequence of conversation can also determine mutual understanding among the participants. However, the Indonesian talk show offers a longer answer pair compared with the English one. Both talk shows, in fact, share the similar indicators and use similar strategies in order to achieve coherence across the talk show sessions. Speaker’s hesitation is found more in the Indonesian talk show instead of the English one. Another marker of coherence, overlap onset, also occurs a lot in both talk shows. The way speakers (host and interviewee) maintain the topic throughout the talk supports the notion that mutual understanding is successfully achieved. Meanwhile, culture is considered not too influential in determining different ways of maintaining the flow of the talk. Both talk shows use similar patterns with no significant difference in terms of culture. They differ only in the level of conversational devices used which is related to language use instead of cultural background. Keywords: coherence, adjacency pairs, turn-taking, talk shows Abstrak: Studi ini mencoba menunjukkan bagaimana koherensi percakapan dicapai dalam talk show, strategi apa yang digunakan oleh pembawa acara serta tamu yang diwawancarai untuk mencapai koherensi secara kolaboratif. Kata kunci: koherensi, pasangan bersesuaian, giliran tutur, talk shows

Dealing with the classroom setting, the study is directed to develop the teaching strategy in order to find out a solution to the classroom’s problem in the teaching of reading. This study reveals that Cooperative Learning strategy has successfully improved students’ critical reading ability. In doing so, there are stages conducted namely, having cooperative work organization, using appropriate media, having creativity (for teachers), monitoring teaching and learning processes closely, and giving students feedback on their work. In conclusion, Cooperative Learning can be beneficial for students’ learning in critical reading as it can make students active and enjoy the classroom activities. However, it also has weaknesses such as time consuming and less appropriate for classes with bigger number of students. Despite the weaknesses, teachers are still recommended to apply this strategy in critical reading classes. Abstract

A case research is a valuable means of providing information about the outcomes of speech and language intervention. The present research aims at documenting phonological development of three subjects who were enrolled in a therapy. This descriptive, cross-sectional research aimed to document the phonological development of speech delayed children whose ages are between 2-4 years. The focus is also to determine the causes and treatment of children with speech delay. The results showed significant changes in two of the subjects’ speech production-the two-year-old H displayed an ability to produce imitative sounds and non-imitative ones; meanwhile, the four-year-old AK also performed perfect imitative sounds, yet she cannot produce nasalized coda. The three-year-old AR, however, could not produce meaningful speech. Evaluation revealed development of the three subjects were affected by the exposure to language at home. A younger age child performed better during the therapy sessions compare to the one in older age whose delay might be caused by early neglect. Speech therapy emphasized on the importance of imitation through a modeling activity in the session, so that the children could imitate the sound first while providing context through pictures.

Abstract

Children acquire language through interaction with other children, their parents, and their surroundings. Acquisition of language may influence children’s success at school. The language aspect that children acquire first is phonology. In acquiring language, children whose language development is slower than their peers may experience speech delay. Thus, the present study emerges to investigate the phonological development of a three-year-old child who is diagnosed with speech delay as well as to examine the factors that support the development. Using a qualitative approach, this study was a case study that employed a single participant. The results of the study indicated that the participant’s language ability developed significantly after several months of receiving therapy. He displayed an ability to produce imitative sounds and non-imitative ones. The spontaneous utterances were also meaningful compared to what he had before the therapy. The evaluation revealed that the development of the subject was affected by the exposure to language at home. Speech simulation and screen time limitation were keys to improving his language ability
